Trance Reviews

I feel like the story took way too much time to get to what was really a set of circumstances that were manipulated...

| Original Score: B- | Aug 20, 2024

Inside a twisting scenario about an art-heist-gone-wrong is Boyle’s more fascinating trip inside unconscious minds and damaged psyches.

| Original Score: 3.5/4 | Sep 12, 2022

One of my least favorite of Boyle's films.

| Original Score: 2.5/4.0 | Sep 26, 2020

"Trance" is glossy, slick, and, especially early on in the film, the trippy madness is a lot of fun. Though with all bells and whistles and brightly colored shiny things, it's never as shocking or complex as it aims to be.

| Original Score: C+ | Jul 9, 2020

...although TRANCE is engaging and evokes Boyle's finest work, the chronic lack of empathy and extremely neat framing of the plot 'twists' mean that, in the long run, it will be no more than a footnote in his career.

[A] stunning film and another [Danny] Boyle triumph that simply must be seen.

| Original Score: 5/5 | Oct 23, 2019

McEvoy plays the anti-hero at the heart of the movie's existential riddle. And he does the job. But thanks to Cassel and Dawson, Trance is also pretty damn sexy.

While there's a certain amount of suspense undeniably well executed as we're left to decipher what's really happening and whose hypnonightmare we could very well be trapped in, this dread gets weighted down with asinine character motivations.

| Aug 9, 2019

It is a frenetic, haunting genre-bender that grabs hold of and keeps your attention from its first moments to its last.

| Jul 30, 2019

It hypnotizes the audience with a clever slight of hand -- a cinematic crime puzzle that proves to be quite entertaining.

| Original Score: B | Apr 10, 2019

There's still something undeniably addictive about being placed under this particular director's cinematic, silky smooth spell.

| Original Score: 3/5 | Feb 13, 2019

McAvoy is winsome as an everyman who can't remember why he decided to be exceptional. And Dawson is so smooth, her mesmerizing performance papers over all of the problems with the plot.

| Original Score: 3/4 | Dec 12, 2018

Boyle gives Trance an ambience of penetrating suspense courtesy of Rick Smith's soothing musical score and the crisp cinematography of Oscar-winning Anthony Dod Mantle. Flamboyant yet slightly flawed, Trance is a spell-binding spectacle

| Original Score: 2.5/4 | Nov 17, 2018

This is a film that must be experienced. The fragmented, distorted poster is the perfect analogy for this striking picture that will absorb audiences from start to finish.

| Nov 1, 2018

The film feels lacking in certain areas, mainly due to an ending that I don't think gels with the proceeding film.

| Original Score: 6/10 | Nov 1, 2018

Trance is so in love with its dream-within-dream conceits it pays little attention to anything else. It pays little attention to detail, and you know how such things bother me.

| Sep 4, 2018

A mind-bender thriller all too cleverly helmed by the risk taking Brit filmmaker Danny Boyle.

| Original Score: C+ | Mar 9, 2018

British director Danny Boyle has delivered a thriller that takes place inside the thoughts of one character and it proves to be a head trip of the best kind - visually arresting, rapidly paced and unafraid of going into darker places.

| Original Score: 4/5 | Nov 8, 2017

In the end, it's the unnecessary tricksiness of the film that halts its flow. A crucial human component is missing.

| Oct 3, 2017

[Trance] evokes an eerie, hypnotic wonderment, consuming you and transporting you, until inevitably, the fingers snap, the eyes open, and the rapturous trance is broken.
