Treasure Planet Reviews

Apr 26, 2025

On the contrary to the stigma surrounding this film, Treasure Planet should have been a smash hit from Disney! It finds itself blending the childish side of Disney (such as comedy, heart, and an easy to follow story) with serious adult themes (single parenthood, feelings of being misunderstood, and overall angst) into a beautiful peace of art. This film still doesn't get its flowers. All I can say is watch it for yourself, it's truly one of the best pieces of media Disney has ever released

the best Disney movie period

*Treasure Planet* is that one Disney film people always forget exists, and honestly, that’s a crime. Watching it again, I was reminded just how *gorgeous* the animation is—seriously, the blend of 2D and CGI still holds up. The concept? Genius. A space-faring *Treasure Island*? Yes, please. The worldbuilding is rich, the character designs are wildly creative, and the interactions between Jim and Silver? Perfection. Their dynamic alone carries so much heart. It’s charming, adventurous, and full of stunning visuals that make you wonder why this *isn’t* considered a Disney classic. Meanwhile, we’re getting live-action remakes of everything, but not *this* masterpiece? Make it make sense. Also, can we talk about Jim’s dad? There’s a story there, and I wouldn’t mind a sequel exploring it. Bottom line: *Treasure Planet* is beautiful, underrated, and deserves way more love. I had a smile on my face the whole time.

A gorgeous movie with amazing and memorable characters that deserve to be talked about more. Underrated movie

Underrated 2000's gem that doesn't always hit, but has so much passionate creativity with its unique blending of 1700's sailor times and alien future technology. The story arc with Long John Silver is touching and there are some great side characters like the catty captain and the cute transforming blob Morph.

In 2002 Disney made a poor advesiting to promote this movie, which sadly made it Go to the oblivion. This adaptation of Treasure Island it's interesting and beautifully animated with the perfect balance with the traditional 2D animation with 3D graphics. The story it's appealing to the young male audience wich it's refreshing, since mostly of Disney main characters are females and princesses. Jim Hawkings and John Silver's dynamic it's perfect, the plot perfectly written and well balanced with action, drama and comedy.

a coming of age and scifi masterclass in beautiful 2d animation

The blend of cgi and 2d animation is incredible and how close the story is to the real book is great. There’s small comedic parts which really make it a family favourite movie

"Treasure Planet" was the movie that John Musker was wanting to make for the longest time. Disney kept telling him no, and instead had him work on other projects like "Hercules" and "Hunchkback of Notre Dame". Finally, he earned enough credit to go forward with his ambitious animated sci-fi project. Science fiction does not seem to have a great track record at the box office when it comes to animation. 2 years prior to this "Titan A. E." had bombed hard, and years later films like "Clone Wars" and "Mars Needs Moms" would not fare much better. Following the trend, "Treasure Planet" did not perform well at the box office. But how does the movie hold up on its own? "Treasure Planet" is a loose adaptation of Robert Lewis Stevenson's "Treasure Island". As the name implies, the difference in this version is that the events are happening in space. Starting with the positives, the movie does capitalize on its animation to give us some cool visuals. The world created in the movie is an interesting one, full of weird technology, alien species and colorful planets. It makes the idea of being a space pirate look as cool as that sounds. A lot of the CGI mixed with classic animation stands out and hasn't aged that well, but it helps make the world seem more off-kilter and mysterious. The setting is good, but its the characters where this movie falters. Our main protagonist, Jim, is very much just a blank slate character that the audience can insert themselves into. He doesn't have much of a personality. Long John Silver, in this version of the story, looks very interesting, but you can never get a grasp on what he really wants. His motivations are inconsistent and flip flop so often, that you don't really get to know him. The comedic relief robot came across more annoying than comedic, and the rest of the characters don't get enough screen time to really make an impact. The story seems a bit derivative at this point. After all it is based off a book from 1883 so most of its material has already been pirated by other stories. With some of its sci fi twists, it opens up a series of questions about the set up that don't add up upon evaluation. You are able to overlook a lot of those questions in the moment because it leads to an exciting finale. Overall, "Treasure Planet" has a great setting with an unique visual style. The style doesn't always work, but it is striking. The characters are forgettable and the story, outside the setting, is nothing new. With all that in mind, I can see why the film didn't do well financially. There is little treasure to be found here.

Inventive artistic expression with top notch environmental design. A unique set of characters with well-done design.

Let me share my thoughts on Disney's animated film, Treasure Planet. From the moment you see it, the character designs are so enchanting that you can't help but feel like you're about to embark on a magical journey. The only character whose name I can consistently recall is Jim Hawkins, despite having watched the movie numerous times. I’ve tried to fully engage with the story, but somehow, I never seem to remember the plot or finish the film. I genuinely want to appreciate this movie and grasp its emotional depth. However, each time I watch it, I find myself distracted, unable to focus on the unfolding narrative and instead drifting into my own thoughts. This is one of those films I hoped to enjoy from start to finish. The characters are intriguing, and I wish I could connect with them better. Unfortunately, it feels like they arrived at a time when they just didn’t resonate with younger audiences the same way as other films from the Disney Renaissance. It’s a shame because the visual style is quite imaginative, but the story feels a bit underwhelming, and the characters fail to hold my attention. I encourage you to give it a shot and let it have its moment in the animation spotlight. It’s one of those films that seems to have faded over time. Even Disney itself doesn’t often reference it, which speaks volumes about its place in their legacy; it feels like even they have moved on from this particular film.

It’s a beautiful fun and overall great watch of storytelling that’s lost to Disney these days due to many factors it’s been one of my favourite films for the longest time but this is only my opinion and would suggest you watch it and decide for yourself

TREASURE PLANET may have just instantly show up to my favorite Disney animated movie ever. Such a splendid adventure and adaptation of the seminal Treasure Island. It really does everything perfect, space pirates may ust be the coolest genre of all time.

A wonderfully beautiful movie with a great story and heartfelt messages. Anyone with parental problems can find comfort in this film, as it tackles issues like that with a fun space pirate coating over it.

Being from the old guard, Treasure Island is a great book and a great story. To adapt Treasure (Island) Planet to the space age probably made Disney more money, but it robbed the young viewers of an honest introduction to Treasure Island.
