Troll Reviews
Troll plays its premise too seriously to be any fun and it lacks any socio-critical muster to be an effective disaster film.

“Troll” is as much fun as any of the recent films in Legendary Pictures’ MonsterVerse.

With a perfect run time, some superb visuals, and a throughline of some brilliant mythology, Troll deserves to be watched.

That often dismissed and maligned word “fun” defines “Troll” in a nutshell. It’s an eye-popping genre flick that delivers exactly what you expect from it. Nothing more; nothing less.

A goofier riff on 2014’s Godzilla, greatly in debt to the Roland Emmerich disaster textbook.

“Troll” succeeds by getting back to basics. Like way, way back — all the way to the Old Norse.

The film throws in some themes about sins committed in the name of Christianizing Norway and nature "pushing back" on human encroachments. But don't go looking for serious commentary in this movie (not that you would in a film called Troll).
| Original Score: 3/5 | Dec 14, 2022
Uthaug seems to have learned the proper lessons from King Kong and Godzilla, as it builds tension well, supplies strong enough effects, and never leans too hard into camp or sincerity.
| Original Score: 8/10 | Dec 14, 2022
Troll does exactly what you are hoping for.

Rich in spectacle and mythology even if offering nothing we haven't seen before.

Troll is a fun jaunt through the Norweigan countryside filled with a path of destruction that’s very much like a Kaiju film. As a casual watch, this is decent and entertaining, but it’s not memorable or lasting.
| Original Score: 3/5 | Dec 9, 2022
A great piece of unassuming monster mayhem, a refreshingly Nordic take on tropes and cliches that Hollywood has mined to the point of exhaustion over the years.
| Original Score: 4/5 | Dec 8, 2022
Troll is a low-key high-craft meat-&-potatoes addition to the kaiju canon.

Watching Troll is like engulfing a cherished comfort food meal. The film’s lack of nutritional value is frankly irrelevant compared to the charming spectacle Uthaug and company cultivate.
| Dec 6, 2022
Troll is an effective and family-friendly monster movie, with bloodless combat and few scares.

The director handles well the different tempos of the film, creating intrigue even though we all know the Troll will be up to no good in no time... [Full review in Spanish]

While the effects work is first-rate and the action efficiently handled, there is a frustrating lack of Scandinavian specificity on display.

Entertaining and scary too, this Norwegian film should please you.

Every single scene in Troll is cribbed wholesale from other movies, and very few of those other movies are any good.

Directed by the fabulously named Roar Uthaug, the new Norwegian language Netflix film Troll is a wonderful pastiche of American blockbusters.
