True Grit Reviews
A great western, really enjoyed It
Wayne carried this film and deserved the Oscar. I think the movie accurately portrayed the "Old West" was a lawless tough place to live in. But the script and acting, except for Wayne, weren't that good. The talking was too formal and stiff. Overall a good film.
You must have a bladder the size of a peanut!
Western and John Wayne fans will find True Grit to be rather entertaining. John Wayne gives his best performance here.
A bit ahead of its time but held back by an avoidance of any discussion on fundamental issues. Kim Darby is enchanting and John Wayne brings a beautiful chemistry to the pair. The other dude is kinda forgettable. The stunt work and choreography are really impressive for the time and the beautiful landscapes look amazing in full color. It's a nice twist on a classic Western.
Rating: 7/10. 74/100
It has the scenery, the gunplay, and the Duke that we all expect from a stereotypical Western. Its literary roots in a somewhat unconventional story foregrounding the revenge tale of a 14 year old girl give it a high-mindedness lacking in other Westerns and the elegiac tone of late period John Wayne and later period Hollywood elevate this film and make it something special.
Fantastic from beginning to the end. John Wayne is superb!!!!
There are too many reasons to explain why this is my favorite movie, but I'll just name one; the final shoot out is probably the best western shoot out ever.
A solid and entertaining Western, suitable for any and everyone, that finally garnered John Wayne his only Oscar win. A simple and straight-forward adaptation of the original novel with a solid cast and easy to follow narrative. The two hours is well paced and fast without straying too much along the way. I think I still prefer the remake (2010) slightly over this original version, but there is still a lot to like here.
Must see if you love westerns and John Wayne
great story and adventure. an john wayne is awesome
Some really great performances, but to me this movie is highly overrated.
True Grit is an engrossing Western in which the true star is Kim Darby, who plays a strong female (with true grit) who also has human flaws (overconfident, name-dropper).
True Grit is an awesome Western movie about revenge with thrilling performances and interesting characters. Its story, while simplistic, is a very engaging one nonetheless, as it manages to feel epic without much to work off of.
A corny as they come western but Kim Darby plays a great role as a young woman seeking the apprehension of her father's killer. Watch to the end and get the rewards.
Surprisingly Ford fit his role nicely, but for the most part the actors seem miscast to me, and the changes from the book were unwelcome.
