Tumbbad Reviews
'Tumbbad' is very good folk horror fare. It's a movie that feels unusual for what Bollywood tends to offer, at least the sorta films that I've checked out from this part of the world. Aside from the evidently irremovable music interlude, it felt different - a good different. I would say that the story gets a bit underwhelming across the middle portion, though the opening chunk and final moments are impressive - both featuring young actors, in my opinion this flick is at its strongest with Dhundiraj Jogalekar and Mohammad Samad (plus Jyoti Malshe, Rudra Soni) onscreen. The special effects for when the characters are involved with Hastar aren't the greatest, but the film undoubtedly makes it work and it still adds the required creepiness. The practical effects for the 'old woman' are excellent though, very unnerving. Story-wise it is sturdy, it's fairly straightforward in terms of the message of greed but it works and is portrayed nicely. As noted, if not for a meandering middle I'd be rating this higher. All the same, it's a suitably entertaining movie and one that's worthy of recommendation.
True horror. Rating: 7.8/10
This was an interesting film on greed and the presentation was awesome. However, there were a few scenes in the film that did not add much momentum to the screenplay in the later half.
What a hidden gem. I¡¯ve never seen an Indian horror movie before (I belief it¡¯s Indian). Out of curiosity, I did a google search for one and this one came highly recommended. Since it was free on streaming, I figured, why not. I thoroughly enjoyed it. Avoided all the typical cliches. The beginning part with the kid and the old lady was scary as hell. Felt like this movie is a retelling of a centuries-old myth that doesn¡¯t exist. Seeing how a character transforms as he ages was great. Not at all a flat, one-sided lead that we¡¯re used to in most western horror movies. The only downside is the slightly weaker CG effects. But it¡¯s not enough to spoil the movie.
? um belo conto de fadas de terror. Temos aqui um trabalho indiano, portanto fugindo das regras ocidentais. O roteiro tem bons momentos de climax. Os cen¨¢rios e trabalhos de fotografia s?o primorosos. As atua??es sustent¨¢veis. Maquiagem e efeitos tamb¨¦m valiosos. A edi??o falha em alguns momentos n?o detalhando as a??es que s?o saltadas, deixando no ar para o expectador.
i have seen many peoples have given positive remarks about this movie, but i personally felt this movie is crap. whole story was ridiculous. this movie showed an era where everyone is greeding and unwelcoming. this movie is ethically disasterous.
"Tumbbad" has constructed a world full of mystery and horror. The story unfolds around the mysterious place of Tumbbad, which seems like a cursed treasure house, containing endless wealth yet also breeding unimaginable horror. The plot of the film gradually reveals the secrets of Tumbbad through the experiences of several generations of a family. This story line passed down from generation to generation adds a sense of profundity to the plot, enabling the audience to deeply feel the spread of the curse over the years. Its unique world view skillfully combines Indian mythology with horror elements, creating a brand-new and creepy atmosphere. Every scene seems to be permeated with the air of ancient evil. Visually, this film can be regarded as a feast. The scene design of Tumbbad is exquisitely detailed. Whether it's the ancient castles, the gloomy basements, or the rain-soaked streets and alleys, they are all full of texture. The design of the monsters is even more ingenious. Their images are terrifying and realistic, and their movements are smooth and natural, which complements the overall dark style of the film. In terms of the use of light and shadow, the film creates a strong contrast between light and dark through skillful lighting. It seems that terrifying things could appear at any time in the shadows in the darkness, and the occasional bright light highlights the ¾ªã¤ of the horror scenes even more, keeping the audience in a state of tension all the time. On the thematic level, "Tumbbad" is not just a simple horror film. It profoundly explores the greed in human nature. When facing the temptation of wealth in Tumbbad, the protagonists are constantly trapped in it and can't extricate themselves even though they know the existence of the curse. This portrayal of greed allows the audience to see the vulnerability of human nature in the face of desires. Meanwhile, the film also reflects concepts such as family and inheritance, as well as the intertwining of destinies among several generations. It serves as a warning, telling people that in the process of pursuing material wealth, the demons deep in their hearts may be awakened, and these demons will drag people into an endless abyss. Sound effects play a crucial role in the film. The sounds of raindrops, the roars of monsters, mysterious whispers, and so on, each kind of sound enhances the rendering of the horror atmosphere. The background music is even the icing on the cake. Its unique melody perfectly matches the rhythm of the film. It can accelerate the audience's heartbeat in tense moments and maintain an uneasy atmosphere in relatively soothing plots, making the audience completely immersed in the horror world created by the film. All in all, "Tumbbad" is an outstanding horror film. With its wonderful plot, excellent visual and sound effects, and profound thematic connotations, it stands out in the field of horror films and brings the audience an unforgettable horror journey. Tumbbad is not just a horror film; it delves deeply into the darker aspects of human nature, particularly how greed and desire can destroy a person's soul. Through the character arc of Hastar, the film shows how an individual gradually loses their morality and humanity in the pursuit of material wealth. The movie does not simply depict a binary of good versus evil, but emphasizes human frailty and desire, warning viewers about the choices they make when faced with temptation. Furthermore, the film's mythological elements are significant, not just as decorative backdrops, but as central to the theme of the story. Through traditional Indian mythology, the film explores the complex relationship between humanity and supernatural forces, while also addressing philosophical issues such as fate, cost, and destiny. It's an awesome gripping till the last scene horror movie ..very entertaining
Tumbbad is a cinematic gem that skillfully weaves folklore, mythology, and the grim consequences of human greed into a haunting narrative. Directed by Rahi Anil Barve, it follows Vinayak, a man obsessed with a cursed treasure guarded by the forgotten god Hastar. If you want to listen to this epic Story: https://youtu.be/XllMJ1wz9F0 The film explores deep themes of generational greed, human flaws, and the tragic downfall of a man consumed by his hunger for wealth. The mythology, rooted in Indian folklore, adds richness to the story, while the portrayal of Hastar, a grotesque embodiment of greed, is both terrifying and symbolic. Technically brilliant, Tumbbad is a visual masterpiece, with breathtaking cinematography by Pankaj Kumar that captures the eerie, decaying landscapes of Tumbbad, enhanced by an ominous score. The relationship between Vinayak and his son Pandurang provides emotional depth, as the cycle of greed is finally broken in a powerful conclusion. This slow-burn horror delivers both suspense and philosophical reflection on the destructive nature of greed, making it a must-watch for lovers of thought-provoking cinema.
I saw this movie in the year it was released but on Netflix, I am not bluffing but I felt urge to watch this movie in a theatre and to my surprise this movie got chosen for re-release wow. I had watched it in a theatre first half alone.
One of the brilliantly constructed movie
Rahi Anil Barve's Tumbbad is a chilling psychological horror thriller. The director did a fantastic job in showcasing how men consumed with greed are more dangerous than a cursed supernatural entity. The famous quote of Gandhi on how world has enough for everyone's need but not for everyone's greedy amply sums up the movie. One of things that make Tumbbad relevant even now is its sharp social critique on feudalism and imperialism. My thoughts on rewatching Tumbbad available in my website rigoberthareviews.com
Earth provides enough to satisfy every man's ?needs, but not every man's greed ?
A Haunting Masterpiece of Greed and Myth "Tumbbad" (2018), re-releasing in 2024, remains a visually stunning and eerily thrilling cinematic gem that delves into the dark depths of human greed. Directed by Rahi Anil Barve and Anand Gandhi, this horror-fantasy film is set in the 1920s and centers on the terrifying myth of Hastar, the first-born of the Goddess of Prosperity. When a family in Tumbbad builds a forbidden temple for Hastar¡ªdespite the ancient warnings¡ªthree generations are cursed by his power and greed. The story weaves a tale of human nature's darkest tendencies, focusing on how greed consumes everything in its path. The myth of Hastar, a being who tried to seize both gold and food in his greed but was overpowered by his divine siblings, is at the heart of this gripping narrative. Hastar's terrifying allure lies in his ability to grant gold coins to those who dare to seek him out, but at an unspeakable cost. This film¡¯s exploration of greed, guilt, and the consequences of defying the gods is as chilling as it is mesmerizing. The movie is an eerie and drenching experience, with every frame filled with palpable tension. The writing is practically flawless, with the plot unfolding at a thrilling pace that keeps viewers hooked from start to finish. The haunting music score only amplifies the tension, weaving seamlessly with the film's visuals to create an unsettling atmosphere that lingers long after the credits roll. Sohum Shah delivers a jaw-dropping performance as the protagonist, effortlessly embodying the complexity of his character, whose obsession with wealth drives him to the brink of destruction. The supporting cast also shines, but it's Shah's nuanced portrayal that anchors the film. "Tumbbad" is a unique concept and an extraordinary story that defies conventional storytelling. The film's visuals, direction, and performances are all top-notch, creating an experience that¡¯s not only captivating but deeply unsettling. The use of folklore, mythology, and horror elements makes it stand out as a genre-defying masterpiece. Rating: 5 out of 5 ¨C "Tumbbad" is a brilliant watch, a haunting and immersive film that explores the perils of greed. It¡¯s a cinematic experience that should not be missed, especially for fans of horror and fantasy. The re-release only emphasizes its timeless appeal, as it continues to captivate audiences with its dark and gripping narrative.
