Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt: Kimmy vs. the Reverend Reviews
The show is still defined by its trademark wit, endless supply of jokes, and brilliant cast.

Good, ingenious fun until the sheer endlessness of it all starts to feel like being trapped in a disturbing cheese dream.
| Original Score: 4/5 | Aug 9, 2021
The special is still very much in the jolly spirit of the series, and finds its way to a rewarding finish that makes the journey worthwhile.

Kimmy vs. the Reverend is a welcome escape from reality, and a delightful watch that will have you going back again and again to discover all the side scenes.

The sharp wit and blink-and-you'll-miss-it-humour that makes Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt so distinguishable is here in abundance.

It was conceptually bold and the cast was great, but it was only a partial success.

It's really just an excuse to spend time with some of our favorite characters, and oh, what a wonderful excuse it is.

I never wanted Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt to end, and now, thanks to its hilarious, interactive, multiple-choice special Kimmy vs the Reverend, it technically doesn't.
| Original Score: 4/5 | Aug 9, 2021
With "Kimmy vs The Reverend," the show reinvigorates itself by finding more compelling ways to indulge its own rhythms and aesthetic.
| Aug 9, 2021
Its combination of an artificially positive sitcom world and the suggestion of a creepy and all-too-real world hovering at its edges gives "Kimmy vs. the Reverend" a knowing, postmodern feeling.
| Original Score: 3/4 | Aug 9, 2021
The special is actually a bit more emotionally grounded than the series had been in a while... But most of this special is just comedy -- fast, furious, very strange comedy from some of the best practitioners in the business.
| Original Score: 3.5/5 | Aug 9, 2021
A fabulous coda worthy of the whimsical heroine.
| Original Score: 3.5/4 | Aug 9, 2021
If season four provided a competent, albeit not hugely memorable, ending to this series, Kimmy vs The Reverend is a rousing victory lap that sends it off in style.
| Original Score: 4/5 | Aug 9, 2021
It's an interesting gimmick, and the writers clearly had a lot of fun with it, but the interactive format messes with the delicate balance of silly humor and horrible tragedy that made the show work.

Ellie Kemper shines in a fiercely funny multi-choice romp.
| Original Score: 4/5 | Aug 9, 2021
What has always been true about Kimmy Schmidt remains true here: both she, and the series/interactive special she inspired, have sensibilities and minds very much of their own.
| Aug 9, 2021
Even going down blind alleys is a hoot with special guest stars waiting in the wings to ridicule your choices and steer you back on the proper path.
| Aug 9, 2021
Experiencing "Kimmy vs. the Reverend," by contrast, is a more emotional experience, very much a matter of helping out characters you know and care about, acting as their proxies, thinking like they think, doing what they'd do.

When I went back and replayed the other choices, the fun of the interactivity really jumped out. With each different pick, there was another gem to be unearthed, a random bit of comedy whether it be a dream sequence, or fantasy or an outlandish death.

This novel, choose-as-you-go Kimmy Schmidt special is fun, but it also makes for some pressure, especially for hardcore fans who know that Kimmy (Ellie Kemper) doesn't always make the best choices on her own.
