Unbroken Reviews

Apr 13, 2025

How is it possible such a powerful story turned into a cinematography masterpiece have such poor ratings I will never fully understand nor believe. Don't pay any attention to these blured ratings and just watch it for yourself. You'll be happy you did.

(ENGLISH) The life of Louis Zamperini had all the ingredients for a great film. Before the war, he was an Olympic athlete with a promising future. Later, fate put him to the test during World War II, radically changing his life. Angelina Jolie brings his story to the big screen with meticulous direction and a traditional approach, though it doesn’t always achieve the emotional depth it aims for. Technically, the film delivers. The cinematography is well-executed, the combat scenes are striking, and Alexandre Desplat’s score fits perfectly. However, despite its impressive visuals, connecting with the protagonist isn’t easy. Jack O’Connell does a solid job, but the script barely allows him to showcase any dimension beyond that of an unbreakable hero. Instead of a nuanced character, he comes across as an overly idealized figure. The film’s most intense moments, such as surviving at sea or enduring captivity in a prisoner-of-war camp, successfully build tension and keep the audience engaged. Still, Unbroken seems more focused on glorifying Zamperini’s resilience than on exploring his vulnerabilities. Everything feels meticulously designed to inspire, leaving little room to portray the raw humanity of his journey. In the end, Unbroken is an uplifting survival drama that works well enough but lacks something to make it truly unforgettable. It’s the kind of film that captivates while you watch it but fades from memory over time.

This film is as accurate and immersive as a historical film can get. Angelina Jolie did an fantastic job both casting and directing this film. Everything from the acting to the sets are absolutely phenomenal!

Unbroken is a captivating film that masterfully depicts the physical torture endured by its characters while also delving into the psychological toll of their experiences. The acting is exceptional, and the movie strikes a powerful balance between brutality and resilience. It’s an intriguing take on a war story, and one I find myself returning to again and again. A solid film that I’d highly recommend to anyone who appreciates war dramas with depth.

Not sure how anyone could give this film a bad review. It's inspiring and emotional. Great direction by Angelina Jolie of an outstanding script by the Cohen brothers and a powerful performance by Jack O'Connell.

Too many missed pieces from the book and originating story. It tried, and what was good was great, but the rest was left for the imagination unfortunately.

There’s a good story here, but it’s all to satisfied to just tell it simply, without significant performances, and will drown in a genre filled with much more brutal and powerful wartime depictions.

Lackluster American war film… or whatever it was. Great idea but poor execution. Kill 30 minute off this film and I guarantee it would have received better reviews. I'm a sucker for "real" true stories though and think this movie deserves a watch one time… A wild plot on what this man had to endure in real life, unfortunately this movie felt like he was tortured longer in the movie than in real life…. can't see myself watching it again unfortunately but not a "bad" movie. Filming wise this movie deserves 2 stars… but bringing light on what this man conquered deserves 5. Good watch if you haven't seen it once, unfortunately I wish the filming was executed better.

Unbroken makes the mistake that the book doesn't. Act 1 should be before the war, Act 2 the war, and act 3 after the war, which is a credit afterthought in the movie. Read the book because the full story is compelling, heart wrenching, and borders on unbelievable.

The only time it really drags is when they were stuck out on the ocean...Other than that, it was a pretty decent movie!

I really enjoyed the movie. Lots of hardships overcome. I understand the reviews about the book being much better(I haven't read it) as books tend to be able to describe just about everything in better detail. Anyways, I'd recommend this movie.

What a powerful true story of perseverance in the face of seemingly impossible obstacles and abuse. Seeing this reminded me how good I have it in my life and how I have no room to complain about anything.

This was an excellent movie. Highly recommend. Not sure exactly hos this is not 80 or above in rating. Jolie did an amazing job directing his film.

This has a real low score on Rotten Tomatoes for the kind of movie it is and I really can't understand why. We're parts of it too untrue to enjoy? Did it leave out too much stuff that was in the book (because I know there is a book)? I really liked it and thought that it was a quality-made movie. I would've never guessed that Angelina Jolie did directing work either! She did a terrific job! What a life this man lived and what a story, and quite an impressive ending as well! From beginning to end I mostly enjoyed myself and it got very emotional in some scenes. I don't think there's 1% of humanity that could've gone through what this guy went through.

Verily, in this film, the art of acting hath been masterfully displayed, wherein the portrayal of emotions doth shine brilliantly. The narrative taketh us back to the somber days of World War II, delving into the harrowing existence of prisoners of war under the rule of Japan. With an unwavering commitment to realism, the film doth paint a vivid and unflinching picture of the darkest aspects of life during that time. The actors, through their skillful performances, doth breathe life into their characters, evoking a profound sense of empathy and connection. Let it be known that this film doth not shy away from the harsh realities of war and captivity, but rather confronteth them with unyielding honesty and authenticity. It serveth as a poignant reminder of the indomitable human spirit in the face of unimaginable adversity. May this cinematic experience leave an indelible mark upon our hearts, urging us to reflect upon the sacrifices and resilience of those who have endured the trials of war.

As a memorial to the suffering veterans went through in WWII, it was incredibly powerful and moving. As a film, granted an incredibly high quality one, it was emotionally exhausting. It just kept getting darker and darker and did not let up untill the very end of the movie. Worth watching, but really hard to. 70/100

While Angelina Jolie, in her second narratively established feat, seems to channel the familiar scope stemmed from the Golden Age with mesmerizing cinematography visually pushing that thought, her storytelling pursuit is inspirationally faithful to the overall eponymous meaning powerfully embodied, under proudful manifestation, by Jack O'Conner. Though tough to watch through instinctual and abusive ordeals, albeit functioning obstacles to the main theming, Jolie's take on the war genre subtly provides an interesting study via fresh perspective defining some sorted relation in between two opposing forces, even though straight to the factual story without speculatively contributing to unearthing depths within as led. This movie is a lot better when you've read the book first. Louie is amazing and so is his story.
