Under the Cherry Moon Reviews

Apr 22, 2025

It's nothing short of a cult classic. Prince's Charm, combined with the creative direction and soundtrack makes this movie the Dark Horse of the Prince Trilogy.

One of my favourite films as a lover of Prince, it's cheesy, the acting was never going to be Oscar winning but the story line is entertaining and soundtrack is amazing. I can watch it over and over

Under The Cherry Moon may not be as good as Purple Rain, but it is a bit more story-focused. Despite a number of weird moments that are in the film, I honestly enjoyed it. Prince fans will without a doubt like it, but it's not really a film for everyone.

Him Not sure what Prince was doing in this well what he is going for will give better rating once I figure it out

Sophomore slumps are a real thing. Prince's Purple Rain is considered a critical and financial success. Under the Cherry Moon in my opinion is just not good and it shows Prince did hit a sophomore slump. In fact, Under the Cherry Moon is a poorly executed film. Not only that, the film contains forgettable musical numbers. To top it all off, Prince, Steven Berkoff, and Kristin Scott Thomas were overacting throughout the entire film. Under the Cherry Moon is not a film in my opinion. It's nothing more than a 100 minute music video.

Prince's best movie!! Absolutely hilarious! I loved the comedy element of this one!!

Say what you like about this movie, but if you are a Prince fan it's the greatest movie of all time after The Godfather! Lol It's so much fun. A capsule of Prince at his most Swag!

The consummate artist may have been in over his head putting together a plausible screenplay which seems the take a backseat to the stunning visuals, wonderful choice of black and white and obvious music strengths of the film

Okay, MAYBE my impression has to do with people calling this such a terrible film for 35 years, or maybe it's just that I've bailed out of a lot of drek that one finds on streaming services, but this was WAY better than I was expecting. Damning with faint praise, right? That's not my intent, just giving some context. Does it benefit considerably from having some strong actors alongside Prince and Jerome Benton? Absolutely! Had I the opportunity to do some dialogue edits, would I? Again, totes. BUT, this has more of an actual NARRATIVE PLOT than Purple Rain (which, let's be real, is an extended music video stitched together with scenes that turn it into kind of an allegory about becoming an adult). Take the music out of this and it's still a story. Prince's theatrical performance lacks the nuance that his lyrics/music performances are capable of, but that would be a high bar for one of the most talented musicians who's ever lived! How gifted CAN one dude be, after all?! It would just be too unfair if he was ALSO this really amazing actor! ;-) So, even at it's weakest, it's very watchable. And there's so much here that's charming or funny. I'm glad I finally saw it, and know exactly where all those gif reactions I like to use come from, now! It's one of those fluffy pieces of entertainment I may even find I crave from time to time, on a weekend afternoon when nothing else is happening!

N France, Christopher (Prince) & his cousin Tricky (Jerome Benton) R gigolos who hear about a trust fund from a wealthy heiress Mary Sharon (Kristin Scott Thomas) & attract 2 her. Christopher & Mary eventually fall N love, leaving behind Tricky, who, N quarreling with envy, spills the beans about his cousin's real intentions. Meanwhile, Mary's parents disapprove of her new lover & want her 2 B with her fiancé N New York. Like many Prince music videos, Under the Cherry Moon has a lot of style, paying tribute to 1930's cinema with a black-&-white filter & a screwball premise, but the movie's plot has 2 many holes. 1st, why do these 2 low privilege guys travel 2 the Riviera 2 woo all these socialites, even though they don't speak French & probably have super-rich housewives N America? 2nd, wouldn't the plot B more interesting if Mary was the manipulator trying 2 steal Christopher's property & money? 3rd, if Chris & Tricky R so desperately 4 money, then how did they fly from United States 2 France with low income? Finally, why does Isaac have hired goons? He's not a Bond movie villain with world domination N his mind, he's a regular person who throws dinner parties & worships his wealthy family, like most millionaire stereotypes. While it has a great soundtrack by Prince, Under the Cherry Moon is 1 example of style-over-substance. (2 Stylized Misspellings on Napkins out of 5)

It's only watchable because it's a Prince film...and he is fabulous in it.

Despite its notoriety for having tied with Howard the Duck for Worst Picture, Prince's directorial debut showcases the performer's comedic talents as well as the chemistry between him and his co-stars into a reasonably entertaining albeit generally cliched romantic dramedy.

KST in her blossomy years. This film, directed & starring the late Prince, was kinda messy however.

very entertaining...Prince was hilarious

What an odd movie, part old timey slapstick, part serious melodrama, part musical. Prince waffles between great and terrible and there's a really weird homoerotic undertone. But there are some great parts mixed in with the bad.

Prince is just so goddamn charming. This movie is a great mix of Purple Rain and A Hard Day's Night- full of charm, great music and a great sense of humor. I also loved Prince wearing his influences on his sleeve in this film, from the obvious Hard Days Night references (heck, Victor Spinetti is even IN the movie) to the Casablanca settings, to his amazing Rococo 80s outfits. My only complaint is I wish it had been in color, but only because Prince is so vibrant it feels like you're missing a huge piece of who he is in black and white.

I imagine if I went and looked up "vanity project" on the internet the first link would be Under the Cherry Moon. I mean Prince created a film that he stars in, performs the music for, and directs. In it he plays an allegedly talented and handsome man who every single character seems to be attracted to except for old men. So he's successful in life and love and yet he also is the rough guy from the other side of the tracks who can get offended when a rich girl isn't instantly in love with him? Yes, he allows himself to have it both ways in this film. He even manages to find a script that gives him hundreds of extremely awful kisses with Kristin Scott Thomas. I have never squirmed in my seat so much from watching 2 people kiss. Thomas could not look less attracted to Prince. In fact, the story might have worked better if Jerome Benton played the love interest because those 2 guys had better chemistry than Kristin Scott Thomas had with anyone in this movie. I've never seen an actress stick out so awkwardly and give me that feeling that she just didn't want to be there as much as KST in this film. I'm not going to waste time detailing all the many failures in Under the Cherry Moon, because they are too countless to name. There is no good acting, no good dialogue, the music doesn't fit the scenes, the comedy is a failure, and they even filmed it in pretentious black-and-white as if it was attempting some old Hollywood vibe. The only redeeming quality is that there were a couple of moments where I laughed at how awful the film was, but unintentional comedy doesn't win any points from me and didn't stop me from wanting to turn the movie off more than once. Under the Cherry Moon is possibly the worst movie I've ever seen.

Bad, but funny bad. I couldn't resist laughing out loud at some times. "CABBAGEHEAD!" Comedy gold. Just like Plan 9 from Outer Space.

Great soundtrack...the movie is for Prince fanatics ONLY.

I've gone on record liking this movie. Gonna have that record expunged, til I change my mind, again.
