Underworld Reviews

The production and costume designs were clearly labored over, but like any polished exterior that's merely a fragile casing for an empty center, the film waves off character development for skin-tight leather and pouty brooding.

One wishes that Kate Beckinsale got to have a little more fun as Selene and Kraven is a terrible villain, but the blue-filtered Matrix-rip off (action, costume, gun play) is very welcome. Plus: Nighy is having the absolute best time chewing the scenery.

| Original Score: 3.5/5 | Sep 19, 2023

Conspiracies and allegorical angles aside, this sleekly stylized monster mash ends up a big, muddy mess of bad guys: predator versus predator, and the winner takes the human race.

| Apr 8, 2023

A derivative and dramatically weak mess without so much as a design element that wasn't lifted from something better.

| Original Score: 3/10 | Jul 8, 2020

Pulpy, punk-ish story with some intense violence.

| Original Score: 3/5 | Dec 29, 2010

...a hybrid horror and action film that succeeds as neither.

| Original Score: C+ | Jun 13, 2009

Fails to deliver with anything truly tasty or memorable.

| Apr 29, 2009

...a relentlessly unpleasant fantasy epic...

| Original Score: 1.5/4 | Nov 21, 2008

Tony Pierce-Roberts' cinematography perfectly captures the gothic comic-book feel.

[Underworld] could use more plot and deepened characters and less vapid expository dialogue, flashbacks and ballets of bullets.

| Original Score: 2/5 | Aug 7, 2008

This mostly mediocre movie is a painless enough time-waster, thanks to slick production values and some impressive stunt work, but it never lives up to the potential of its premise.

| Jul 7, 2008

The script unfurls a lot of backstory we don't care about illuminating plot mysteries we also don't care about.

| Original Score: D | Jul 25, 2007

The film even has the nerve to set itself up for a sequel. Of course, the ending is so sloppy, that this may have just been an oversight.

| Original Score: 1/4 | Jul 14, 2007

In the end, it's more a role-playing game scenario than a plot -- although there someone would have worked out rules that make sense.

| Original Score: 2/5 | Dec 30, 2006

These vampires have no teeth -- hell, they don't even fly.

| Jun 24, 2006

| Original Score: 3/5 | Jul 5, 2005

[Beckinsale's] detached, no-nonsense demeanor helps give this chilly adventure an S&M-inspired eroticism.

| Original Score: C+ | May 4, 2005

| Original Score: 3/5 | Jan 15, 2005

Endless sequences of posing and posturing by Beckinsale and fellow fangsters.

'Filme bastante cumplidor con el que se pueden desperdiciar dos horas de vida sin remordimiento de conciencia.'
