Unicorn Store Reviews
Visually, Kit’s artistic bent opens up a bevy of colorful visual choices. The acting is strong across the board.

Brie Larson shines in her directorial debut Unicorn Store, giving a new definition to growing up in the 21st Century with the story of an art student on a quest to buy a real-life unicorn.
| Original Score: 4/5 | Sep 18, 2023
Unicorn Store is full of humor, light-heated moments, and filled with this sense of nostalgia for a time when life was easier for us.

A sweet, sweet film but beneath the quirky, glitzy exterior is a message at its nutty centre. So kind of like a Ferrero Rocher...
| Original Score: 4/5 | Nov 10, 2022
I can see it being too quirky for some. Maybe it is lighthearted to a fault and too optimistic for our cynical current-day climate. But despite its flaws I found it to be warm, charming and packed with a ton of heart...
| Original Score: 3.5/5 | Aug 21, 2022
Larson doesn't quite capture the whimsy needed to pull off this story.
| Original Score: 2.5/4 | Mar 3, 2022
[Brie Larson and Samuel L. Jackson have] great chemistry... this film is very abstract, though.

Whether intentional or not, a sort of love letter to the millennial generation.
| Original Score: 3.5 / 5 | Jun 25, 2021
A whimsical comedy that contains tiny traces of drama, but lacks expressive power and fun characters. [Full review in Spanish]

This film is well written, well acted, well designed and an impressive directorial debut from Larson - her next work should be much anticipated now.
| Original Score: 4/5 | Jul 12, 2020
As Brie Larson's directorial debut it is a glittery delight and definitely showcases her talent and hopefully future directing.
| Original Score: 4/5 | Feb 4, 2020
Maybe we should start celebrating how close we came to fulfilling our dreams more often - that might encourage us to not give up and find a way to realise them eventually.
| Original Score: B- | Jan 8, 2020
Brie Larson's directorial debut offers a quieter, but potent, kind of girl power.

Unicorn Store has a lot of magic, charm and heart, and although at times it becomes a little too fantastical, the character at its core and the journey she goes through provides an entertaining and investing watch.
| Original Score: 8.5/10 | Aug 17, 2019
You can practically see the gears of Larson's earnest intentions straining to churn out an earned resolution for her heroine, but it's tainted by the botched coming-of-age lesson we all have to endure to get there.

Unicorn Store has so much going for it -a great cast, solid premise, an exciting director - but the magic falls flat. That's no fault of Brie Larson, whose endearing performance and uneven yet promising direction keep the movie afloat.
| Original Score: 2.5/5 | Jul 24, 2019
It may seem that McIntyre's screenplay may be a little heavy handed when signalling the male stereotypes but Larson's performance never makes Kit into somebody unrealistically naïve as she manages to maintain a hopeful outlook on life.

The film presents themes about changing our reality with hard work in a friendly and quirky way. [Full Review in Spanish]

Unicorn Store does get points for being unique, but this slow, twee fantasy doesn't have enough interesting ideas to offset its many dull moments.
| Original Score: 2.5/5 | May 21, 2019
Unicorn Store is about unleashing the weirdness of Larson and Jackson and assuring young people, like they didn't already know, that it's OK to be who you are. Yet ultimately, for a sweet film about dreamers and unicorns, it's curiously black-and-white.
