Roland Emmerich’s first American film and easily one of the best films he has ever made. It’s an very box standard action film but it has Jean-Claude Van Damme and Dolph Lundgren being their own charisma and it’s well made

One of my favorite movies of all time and the best movie of universal soldier franchise.

Underrated flick. It's stupid, but so stupid that it's fun again. Van Damme works well as an almost emotionless soldier and Lundgren is a wonderfully over-the-top villain who makes necklaces out of other people's ears. Why? Because he is evil and crazy. The action in this film is unironically well done and really fun and the pacing is great too.

I remember watching this movie over and over on vhs as a kid and loved it. Even when I view it today it's gives a nostalgia feeling.

In the robocop and terminator era, Universal Soldier tried to bring in a veteran plot line that was meh. Van Damme brings a lot of fight but not a lot of character.

Dumb, but JCVD vs Dolph? That's worth a viewing.

Great movie. Everyone should watch this one and the first sequel ignore the rest of the movies.

A passable first effort for Roland Emmerich's journey into Hollywood predating his breakthrough hits Stargate and Independence Day, Universal Soldier knows exactly what it is: a guilty pleasure. The acting isn't great, the plot finds itself struggling to avoid Terminator 2 comparisons and the action, while not bad, hardly reaches the epic scale of Emmerich's disaster films or even that of The Patriot, which is still his best film to date. But still, the premise is interesting, Dolph Lundgren appears to be getting a kick out of playing the villain, there are a few funny moments and I do think this had the potential to provoke some thoughts. I think it would've been even more thought-provoking had they kept the ending that was originally filmed which was more explicitly bittersweet than what was in the final film. But that's not the ending this film canonically has now, is it? Universal Soldier: a bit naïve to treat it as just a ripoff of the likes of Robocop or Terminator 2 but hardly reaches the same heights as those films. At the very least, it's, alongside 2012, one of Roland Emmerich's more watchable films that isn't Independence Day or The Patriot. Would definitely choose this one over White House Down.

The movie is very enjoyable. A lil cheesy but likeable

One of the best JCVD movies of all time a classic in my book

I saw this when I was 16 at the movie theatre at least twice. Its silly but honestly JCVD looks so good in it, it doesn't matter. Certified swoon.

4 out of 5 stars. Solid action film. Universal Soldier taking on a story that has engineered soldiers battling against each other. Van Damme and Dolph Lungren. Good action sequences. Decent script that lacks characterization. But pretty entertaining.

This falls into the "so cheesy it's good" category. Yes the story is lame and the dialogue is cringe-worthy but the action is right up there with the rest of Van Damme's movies.

Terminator rip off that is only watchable because of its cast.

What really makes this an underrated action gem is that we get Van Damme vs Lundgren and, since we never got Schwarzenegger vs Stallone, this is about as good a head-to-head action movie as there is. 4 of 5

An action movie that present a Vietnam soldier literally fighting the ghost of his past. An above average 80s-early 90s action movie that is highly entertaining.
