Unstoppable Reviews
Every underdog will have his day, but Unstoppable is a glossy, elemental play on familiar impossible obstacles to overcome, except there's no investment for us to feel much when it's done.

“Unstoppable” doesn’t pin an unbelievable story. But it certainly makes you want to see it turn out well. Raise your hand for this one.

Jerome and Lopez build an undeniable chemistry that powers the movie, and it wouldn’t work at all unless Jerome wasn’t excellent as well. He is.

The real Anthony Robles is absolutely an inspiration, and the movie about him is serviceable enough to do him reasonable justice thanks to Jerome’s rock-solid performance and the steady hand of director William Goldenberg.

Jerome and Jennifer Lopez bond playing mother and son in a film that’s truly an inspiration for all aspiring athletes. William Goldenberg keeps it real with a tight hold on the script and in the ring.

Cheadle and Lopez, along with a very good Michael Pena, make all the big moments hit for extra power. Lopez goes understated in the role of the fiery mother behind the incredible son; she could have hammed it up and still produced a good performance.

The strong performances score points for a predictable underdog-athlete true story.
| Original Score: 3/5 | Jan 22, 2025
Unstoppable, in disappointing contrast to Anthony himself, does not even attempt to rise to the occasion, timidly walking the path most travelled with minimal fanfare.

The overall structure may be a no-go for remodelling (no points to guess which matches Robles loses or wins) but the moments in between could have brought it whole.

Robles, who played Jerome’s stunt double, deserved a better movie. If it was not for the cast, “Unstoppable” would be better suited for a television movie, and it is mostly going to streaming.

Unstoppable looks pretty defeatable.
| Original Score: 2.5/5 | Jan 19, 2025
Yes, tropes and cliches abound, the schmaltz and cheese levels are high and there are a couple of strange jumps in time, but Unstoppable remains watchable because Jerome convinces us that his is a performance – and thus a story – worthy of your time.

Goldenberg's film feels, looks, and smells like inspiration in the form of championship wrestler (an amateur, not a kind of WWE "pro") Robles, a sensationally upbeat guy, born with one leg, and personified by an astonishingly believable Jharrel Jerome.
| Original Score: 4/5 | Jan 18, 2025
This film presents an extraordinary story, and despite a few loopholes and clichés, it delivers an inspiring and authentic narrative.
| Original Score: 3.5/5 | Jan 18, 2025
Unstoppable relies on the abilities and creativity of the cast and writers to give the movie its own individual identity. It does follow the format, but that isn't to its detriment.
| Original Score: 7/10 | Jan 17, 2025
Unstoppable is an emotional but overly dramatic watch that leaves a thorough impact regardless.
| Original Score: 3/5 | Jan 17, 2025
I fear this straightforward telling of Anthony Jerome’s life story will be too “ordinary” to make waves during awards season, but that’s OK: I’m pretty sure moviegoers will approve

It's kind of a paint-by-numbers sports movie, but I do appreciate that it is not overplaying the uplift.

Perfectly fine and serviceable as an underdog sports drama.

The movie is keyed in to struggle and triumph, and on those narrow terms it’s a success.
