Vampire's Kiss Reviews

Nic Cage being Nic Cage in a very 80's goofy movie

Jan 12, 2025

Cage fans will find a lot to appreciate about his completely insane performance that borders on Kabuki acting in its hyper expression. Setting aside a fascinating performance from one of Hollywood's most unique actors, this film drags, has a weak score, shows some very bad 80s camera work and is completely forgettable. Then again, describing a Nic Cage movie without his performance is like summarizing Halloween without Michael Myers. He's pretty much the entire point of the movie. Again, if you're not a big Cage fan, save yourself 90 mins of late 80s generic filmmaking. Otherwise grab the popcorn, you're in for an unforgettable treat!!

Confusing unwatchable movie. Waste of 2 hours you will never get back. Dickless Cage is his usual manic self. Is this a psychological thriller or just a plotless piece of trash?

So… what the actual f*** did I just watch? There is a really good reason this movie is memed to oblivion that’s for sure!

Strange, thought provoking, and entertainingly squeamish story of descent into madness. Main reason to watch is Nicolas Cages acting in those iconic scenes. Some of the attitudes, language a little dated. Liked Renfield better.

One of my favorite movies. It's really dramatic and creepy and touching and even pretty funny, but definitely not a comedy; it should have never been marketed that way. More like a bizarre psychological study of how work and sex addiction courts madness.

Good funny movie Can't believe this was the prequel to renfield

Campy Nic Cage perfection. You have to go into it knowing it’s over the top and appreciate that bizarre lunacy. Cracks me up every time.

Cage should have won an Oscar for his performance.

5/10. 55/100. | One of the only performances where you can say it's both really good and really bad. 😅

After watching Renfield and seeing Cage play Dracula it's obvious he held back in this earlier Vampire role. Phobe for the pod.

Well, I finally verified it for myself. #VampiresKiss is 3/4 of an utter masterpiece. Far ahead of its time.

Umm I kinda hated it unfortunately. The thing is is that this I guess is a horror comedy which means it's ridiculous, but I also didn't really find it funny and in fact I did find it a bit scary oddly enough. So it subverted my expectations there I guess! I wasn't really coming at it like a true horror movie so I was confused when I was so uncomfortable watching it lol. Definitely made me think of American Psycho. Which I also don't love. But I think they're both good movies.

Watching Nic Cage slowly slip away into this delusion that he's a vampire is hysterical, to say the least. The movie is completely absurd, but it's worth watching to see Cage at his most neurotic!

A fascinating experiment/character study of Cage applying the classic vampire & silent film mannerisms into the realistic setting of 1980s New York. As ridiculous as it is, this is a memorable/unique performance & film.

The problem is that Nicolas Cage's character is so unlikable you want him to suffer.

Classic. Funny, sad, absurd, poignant statement on life and alienation in the big city

"Alright Nic, this movie takes place in New York City. Think you could do a New York accent for me?" The genius Nic Cage: "Absolutely fucking not." Audrey Hepburn was at her most endearing and energetic in Breakfast at Tiffany's, Daniel Day-Lewis was at his most intense in There Will Be Blood. Well, Nicolas Cage was at his most Nicolas Cage in Vampire's Kiss. The man is certifiably insane in this film, every spoken word and every motion is exaggerated to the point of ridiculousness in this dark surrealistic comedy that's like a goofball American Psycho, where Cage's inner-city yuppie character is self-deluded into believing that he's transforming into a vampire. At one point he staggers around a park to catch a pigeon, and at times he interacts with random people on the street (not extras) who recoil in fear and disgust. As a film, there doesn't really seem to be too much to dissect or take away - it's just a goofy comedy with a bit of a macabre bent, but it's made into a classic with incredible entertainment value thanks almost entirely to Cage's bonkers performance. Remember 'every frame a painting'? Well Vampire's Kiss is 'every scene a meme'. (3.5/5)

Hilarious acting and writing. I love movies where I'm never sure if something was intended to be funny or not but crack me up none the less. So many quotable scenes.
