Vanguard Reviews

Supercop? Super-bland.

| Original Score: 1/5 | Jan 11, 2021

It's an unforgivable waste of Jackie Chan, action-movie legend, reduced here to pratfalls and gurning double takes.

| Original Score: 2/5 | Jan 9, 2021

It's all atrocious.

| Original Score: 1/5 | Jan 8, 2021

Veteran Hong Kong action director Stanley Tong reunites with his longtime star Jackie Chan for this amiable but rather under-par adventure with silly CGI effects.

| Original Score: 2/5 | Jan 6, 2021

There's no reason why a movie that features Jackie Chan, lion attacks, and machete-wielding henchmen on Jet Skis should be as boring as Vanguard.

| Original Score: D | Nov 26, 2020

Chan's latest star vehicle didn't need to be anything more than a good work of propaganda, but it's not even compelling on those terms.

| Original Score: 2/4 | Nov 20, 2020

Even a forgetful Jackie Chan movie is still a Jackie Chan movie worth seeking out.

| Original Score: 2/5 | Nov 20, 2020

The movie might've flown as a larky fantasy-adventure whatsit if it possessed any self-aware wit.

| Nov 20, 2020

It's a lackluster, inanely plotted throwback that relies far too heavily on ineffective digital effects.

| Original Score: 2/4 | Nov 20, 2020

Pretty dull and not much fun.

| Original Score: 2/4 | Nov 19, 2020

"Vanguard" is... in line with [the] brand of amiable action mayhem Chan pioneered in 1980s vehicles like "Police Story" and "Project A," only not as good.

| Nov 19, 2020

Vanguard may attract the ultra-bored and/or stir crazy and devoted Chan fans, but those expecting to see the blazing acrobatics of his earlier work will be intensely disappointed.

For the most part, this film has the disadvantages of Chinese action films, without the advantages. That is, it overdoes the action and it's short on character, without attaining the manic, wild heights of Hong Kong cinema of the 1980s and early '90s.

The film is an uncanny reflection of the jingoism that Hollywood has been wrapping in glossy spectacle and exporting to foreign markets for decades.
