VFW Reviews
Old-timer war veterans vs. drug-crazed street punks. And it does get messy.

VFW is blast. Don't miss this one.

"VFW" feels like it crawled out of a grimy, urine-soaked 1980s gutter. And I mean that in the best possible way.

VFW is a low budget, DIY festival of blood and guts. When the gas hits the pedal, it's a full throttle drive into gore fueled mayhem and it's fun as hell.
| Jun 24, 2020
As grindhouse cinema, it's solid and pleasing, but it is also saying something about the value of human connection and communitarian solidarity as the best treatment to collective malady, contra the fracturing pharmaceuticalisation of everyday life.

With a plugin play version of genre tropes, it spins a wheel of more celebrated films with the novelty of it throwing up some devil horns and exclaiming: "Old guys rule!"
| Original Score: C+ | Apr 10, 2020
Isn't for the faint of heart and while it might be a stretch buying these seniors fighting off hordes of twentysomethings, the cast make it worth checking out.
| Original Score: 7.5/10 | Apr 3, 2020
This is not a film with depth and personality, but more a homage to some of the most-loved and gory action movies ever made...
| Original Score: 2/5 | Mar 29, 2020
Joe Begos has swiftly become one of the most reliable film-makers in horror.
| Mar 12, 2020
It's unfortunate that the combination of small spaces and low light makes some of the action sequences hard to follow, and the film could do with losing ten minutes to tighten up the pace overall, but there's still a lot to enjoy.
| Original Score: 3.5/5 | Mar 9, 2020
Though not quite as magic as his previous film Bliss, Joe Begos once more proves that he's a force to reckoned with when it comes to mixing horror elements with punk rock aesthetics.
| Original Score: 4/5 | Mar 8, 2020
The paradox of VFW is that it is so lovingly crafted, and yet so utterly, gleefully nasty.
| Mar 8, 2020
The film's undeniable lowbrow appeal unfortunately doesn't paper over its tiresome Boomers vs. Millennials conflict, or Begos' vaguely reactionary gushing over the former cohort.
| Original Score: C- | Feb 27, 2020
For VFW, that proclivity grows overwhelming on both the script level and on screen, which leaves it up to Begos' cast to give his viewers something to grip.
| Original Score: 6.9/10 | Feb 26, 2020
A throwback designed to satisfy those with an insatiable craving for a grindhouse cover version of John Carpenter's greatest hits.
| Feb 20, 2020
Shallow, asinine and tedious.

If you walk into a dive bar similar to the one featured in VFW, and this movie is on the screen, you'll probably look up from your beer more than a few times, but not enough for the movie to be truly memorable.

VFW is a cracking thriller, its pulse-pounding theatrics making this an agreeably bruising good time I loved every single gosh darn blood-soaked second of.
| Original Score: 3.5/4 | Feb 18, 2020
The gory retro exploitation film is just plain moronic.
| Original Score: C | Feb 18, 2020
You can definitely do worse in the grindhouse realm in 2020 than VFW, but you can certainly do a lot better, too.
