Vicious Fun Reviews
Vicious Fun (2020) Serial-Killers Meeting (11,644 – 26 Apr 2025 - by Claudio Carvalho) In 1983, in Minnesota, a woman asks for a ride outside a motel and a car stops. When she gets into, the driver is a serial-killer, but she stabs him to death first. Meanwhile, the film critic and writer of the horror magazine Vicious Fanatic, Joel (Evan Marsh), interviews the director Jack Portwood (Gord Rand) of low budget horror movies, and gives the idea of a taxi driver serial-killer. Joel returns home and sees his roommate Sarah (Alexa Rose Steele) returning home with her new boyfriend Bob (Ari Millen). Joel has a crush on Sarah and decides to follow Bob to check whether he is married. Bob stops at a Chinese restaurant and Joel starts a conversation with him at the bar, drinking a lot of booze with him. Bob leaves the bar with another woman and the drunken Joel faints in a service room inside the restaurant. When he wakes up, he walks dizzily and sees that the restaurant is closed. He stumbles upon a group of men seated in a circle of chair – the psychotic serial-killers Fritz (Julian Richings); Mike (Robert Maillet); Hideo (Sean Baek) and Zachary (David Koechner) - and a woman, Carrie (Amber Goldfarb), discussing how to kill and dispose of a body. Joel is mistakenly taken as Phil, who is missing, but when Bob arrives, he is exposed. Carrie helps him and he learns that she belongs to an organization of vigilantes that get rid of serial-killers, and she killed Phil. She also kills Hideo in the kitchen. However, Joel activates the fire alarm and now Carrie and he have to flee from the police and from the killers. “Vicious Fun” (2020) is a great Canadian comedy-horror movie, with a hilarious and full of action story. The loser Joel is a film critic with an unrequited crush on his roommate and gets into trouble when he decides to investigate her new boyfriend. On the other side, Carrie is a vigilante, experienced in murdering serial-killers that teams up with Joel. His muddles are hilarious, but in the end, he helps Carrie. The scene during the credits shows Jack Portwood using the idea of the taxi driver driller. Overall, I had a great time with this film. It's funny, random, wild, violent and bloody. Nothing about Vicious Fun was ever predictable, and performances in the film were also fun. Additionally, we have a soundtrack from the '80s, which only put an even bigger smile on my face. For the most part, the pacing is excellent, but the film does slow down ever so slightly before the third and final bloody showdown. Combined, these factors will leave audiences wanting more films like this one.
Bloody, heartfelt, and hilarious, Vicious Fun is one of the best horror comedies in years.
A horror film critic gets accidentally involved in a self-help group for serial killers. But a great danger arises when his true identity is disclosed. "Vicious Fun" succeeds as a comedy-horror movie that pays homage to the slasher hits of the 80's. Pure entertainment!
Like The Rise of Leslie Vernon, this deconstructs slasher tropes and puts them in a fun and ridiculous high concept idea. Evan Marsh is an engaging lead as the final boy that has to survive a night of various serial killers trying to get him. I have a feeling this may be headed for cult film status.
The retro style and tone carry it throughout, and while the story starts out unique and original it slowly becomes routine and ordinary with an expected ending.
This is a brilliant horror film I don't really like those kinds of movies this one was interesting such a unique story and all the actors were so great. This was done well.
As stated in the title... A fun homage to serial killer films, with an interesting array of characters that each have familiar elements to them. The story is fairly basic, but the film does what it needs to do (much like 'Freaky') and ends up being an enjoyable, genre defining watch.
Of the bat great lighting always a sign the filmmakers are passionate about making the film look and feel quality but probably made on a shoe string. Fun, dark and with lashings of gore with one kill I've never seen before and I've seen a lot of horrors. Lots of homages to various films of the 70's and 80's from Back to the Future, Assault of precinct 13 to various horrors. Definitely for ones that love horror with comedy.
There's no denying that Vicious Fun is silly but it's also incredibly fun. It's not going to be the next big thing in the genre but it sure is entertaining.
Does what it says on the tin. Fun, creepy, wild, hilarious. Surprisingly well-executed and beautifully shot. Feels like you're watching an interpretation of a cult classic graphic novel. Seems like they had a lot of fun making this one.
3.9. The new wave is horror with a bit of fun mixed in
Una impresionante cinta homenaje al cine Slasher de los ochentas y grandiosa en cuanto a su genero horror comedia, con buenas y sólidas actuaciones que hacen disfrutar la cinta a otro nivel.
Vicious Fun mostly lives up to its title. It's a goofy, good time for most of its run time and has a fun 80s retro wave aesthetic to make it feel homely. Unfortunately I didn't find it all that funny and it struggled to maintain my full attention during the middle third.
A failed attempt at cashing in on the charm of Stranger Things gets paired with bad writing, direct-to-DVD actors and cringy costumes and make-up. Nobody in this is very interesting or has more than one dimension. But at least the deaths have some entertainment value and you can have a good time in the few moments where nobody is talking.
Amazing blend of dark, dry humour and gore. Loved it. Great performances by all, Bob was a highlight
this was SO fun! i was anticipating a fairly badly written/acted B movie, but it was SO unexpectedly great. i loved the story, i loved the characters, i loved the 80s vibe - it just all fit. what a fun movie. 10/10 recommend.
Begun with trepidation, but this was unexpectedly great. A well balanced horror comedy set in the 80's without having to shove in a ton of 80's references to compensate for it's shortcomings. Recommended.
