I mean, it commits to its story, that's for sure. 'Viva Riva!' is a crime thriller that truly is just that, as there are no good characters (except Anto, I guess!) - just a bunch of criminals slogging it out across 90 or so minutes. I'm not entirely sure if I like it or not. On the one hand it goes around in circles without anything story-wise actually happening, but on the other hand it actually is kinda fun seeing every character at each other's necks without the film shoehorning a goodie. Patsha Bay, Hoji Fortuna and Manie Malone put in solid performances, Marlene Longage is alright as well. The cast aren't anything amazing but do all work together well, all suiting their respective roles. Bay and Malone share a rather, erm, 'creative' sex scene at around the 41 minute mark, which was more amusing than anything else. Not one I'll remember or likely revisit, though it is a flick that I'd personally consider as passable. Nice to see a film from the DRC, too.

Decently shot film, inhabited by weak characters, going through the motions of a just average script in an effort with very little to actually say or contribute to the genre of crime drama.

Kinshasa is calling. Pénurie de pétrole au Congo. Quand Riva revient à Kinshasa avec des barils à écouler au marché noir, il gagne énormément d'argent dont il compte profiter à outrance. Bémol numéro 1 : les barils ont été volés à son ancien employeur, qui ne compte pas laisser Riva s'en tirer aussi aisément. Bémol numéro 2 : Riva a flirté avec Nora, ce qui ne plaît pas à son copain actuel, le gangster Azor, qui a la rancune facile. Avec ces 2 hommes aux fesses, Riva va devoir faire son possible pour rester en vie. Qui est Riva ? Un congolais qui est apparemment responsable de la mort de son frère, qui a abandonné ses parents et est parti en Angola travailler pour un malfrat qui est dans le pétrole, a roulé ce dernier et revient à Kinshasa pour dépenser le fric gagné suite à ce vol. Comment ? En se tapant des prostituées, en sortant boire de l'alcool dans des clubs, en voulant séduire la nana d'une petite frappe locale. Ensuite ? Rencontres de plein de personnages absolument antipathiques qui finiront tous par mourir (ou presque), et limite on en est bien content ! A Kinshasa, rien ne va. Est-ce ce qu'a voulu nous dire le réalisateur ? Car c'est ce qui ressort de ce film. Tout y est pourri : les militaires, la police, l'église, la famille. C'est trop voyeur avec les très nombreuses scènes de cul à tout va. Et les filles ? On y voit des p****, des ripoux ou des mères de famille qui se font taper dessus. Beaux portraits ! Quel est ce personnage de fille aux cheveux rouges qui sort avec un voyou, danse comme une p***, se laisse toucher comme dans un porno dans les clubs, se tapait le proviseur de son école quand elle était jeune, mais refuse qu'on l'appelle une p*** ??? L'aspect polar est bien rendu, mais les personnages m'ont tellement dégoutée que les côtés positifs en ont été cachés. Entre choc et trash, il n'y a qu'une fine limite, que ce film a franchi allègrement

Interesting Congolese crime-drama. Good set up and initial plot. Drifts in the middle but has a very gritty, un-Hollywood ending (which is a good thing). Solid performances all round.

With 12 nominations and 6 wins, including Best Picture it's no surprise this is the most famous foreign-language African film. "A slick, exciting, well-made crime thriller, dripping with atmosphere."

This is a good movie that the director makes so much effort to seem real. All the actors and actresses are especially performing well, making the movie so much exciting and real. The gas, the dialects, the variety of languages spoken in this movie are amazing! I especially love the cunnilingus scene over a gated windows. Very well thought, creative and heart throbbing. The gun shots are even better! As if shooting in a real gun scene. I must say all the parts paid tribute to the success of this movie.

Good action crime thriller from Congo (DRC)! The characters were great and mufti-dimensional. Im not sure what happened to Rivas brother though - the plot isnt too clear about that- but the movie is worth the watch and the plot is unpredictable.

L'un des grands mérites de "Viva Riva!" est de (re)placer le Congo sur la carte du cinéma international, après des décennies de vide cinématographique. Mais un film tourné en Afrique par des Africains, avec des Africains, ne risque-t-il pas de ne s'adresser qu'aux Africains ? Du fait de l'absence d'expérience préalable en matière de cinéma au Congo, "Viva Riva!" ne souffrira-t-il pas de cadrages maladroits, d'acteurs approximatifs et d'un scénario naïf ? Balayons immédiatement ces clichés et ces a-priori car ce polar urbain, mené sur les chapeaux de roue, avec des acteurs certes amateur mais tout à fait valables, est filmé avec une nervosité qui n'a rien à envier aux productions plus friquées. On se doute bien que le réalisateur Djo Tunda wa Munga doit glisser dans son film quelques considérations sur la décolonisation, la gabegie institutionnalisée de son pays et le racisme ethnique mais il n'en oublie jamais que "Viva Riva!" est et doit rester, si je puis dire, un "Film Noir" congolais, avec gangsters sanguinaires, femmes fatales et flics à la morale trouble, dans un Kinshasa bouillonnant et filmé comme s'il s'agissait de New-York ou de L.A ! Enfin - et c'est assez rare pour qu'on le signale - dans ce film brut de décoffrage, d'une efficacité inattendue et et qui fait preuve d'un remarquable décontraction vis-à-vis de la violence et du sexe, on échappe aux clichés occidentaux obligatoires sur l'Afrique (on ne verra aucun animal sauvage ni aucun p'tit tout-nu en train de jouer dans une rue boueuse)...même si on repère avec amusement d'autres éléments, (sape et tchatche élevées au rang d'art, corruption communément acceptée à tous les niveaux, machisme brutal,...), clichés véhiculés par les Congolais eux-mêmes, mais qui semblent justement assez conscients d'être des clichés !

African crime film, there is not one white person in the entire movie. With that out of the way its a steady moving story with a small amount of violence and a good ending.

There's a part of me that really wants to give this film a break and praise it. Because, honestly, as a first effort by Djo Munga with little support from his home country, this really is an admirable effort. Yet, I have to be honest, Viva Riva! is weirdly derivative. Incorporating all the elements of the typical gangster and noir in it's script, the story just seems rather uninteresting by the end of the movie. I have to admit, there might be a political message that I might be missing but after 3 different viewings I just could not get any more from the experience than my first time viewing it. If writer and director Munga wanted to do more than re-tread the gangster genre then he didn't executed it very well. Another interesting paradox Viva Riva! has is that it's shot and written in a very mundane and down-to-earth fashion. Yet, it occasionally deviates from that and incorporates some very romanticized and stylized plot devices. There is nothing wrong with a stylized representation of the gangster world that is meant to be more operatic than a realistic portrayal. But Munga seems to try to do both and the film just ends up feeling contrived. Essentially Viva Riva! is a more watered down and African version of Gomorrah but ends up saying much less than the Italian gangster film. Again, commendable effort but a derivative experience nonetheless.

Love Congo. Loved the cinematic style. found the overall story slightly lacking but compensated for by rich characters and rich individual stories.

If you thought $4 a gallon of gas was bad try living in a country where gas is really scarce. This is the theme of the movie where Riva comes back with stolen gas from a thug in Angola and well you have to see it to see what happens.
