Wait Until Dark Reviews
A classic suspense thriller indeed originating from the Hitchcockian school featuring a wonderful cast.
Wow a great 60s home invasion thriller. Hepburn is straight up gangsta and Alan Arkin plays a great psycho
Audrey Hepburn plays Susy Hendrix, a blind woman who finds herself unwittingly in the middle of an elaborate drug smuggling scheme. The movie begins with people hiding drugs inside a doll. The doll finds itself in possession of the Hendrix family who are unaware of its significance. 3 Men then conspire to steal the doll from the blind lady and are willing to do whatever it takes to get that doll. Terrance Young, best known for his Bond films, directs a very tense and tightly written thriller. By today's standards the film may seem slow paced. The movie does take some time to get going but give it some time. This movie is a great example of setup and payoff. You may not see it coming, but when it comes it is great.
Would it be a downer to suggest locking the door?
It is really frustrating. It is like a play. Many things happens off screen. All we get is expiation
Excellent nail-biting suspense. I saw this as a kid when it first came out, and I still watch it each time it pops up on TCM. The cast is a great mix of seasoned actors; Efrem Zimbalist Jr., Audrey Hepburn, (she plays the main character in the movie, and outperforms everyone), Alan Arkin, Richard Crenna, more. No gore, just great suspense. Yes, I know how it's going to end each time I watch it, but I still look forward to it each time! I'm also an Aubrey Hepburn fan and love most of her movies, with this one showing her great acting talent.
Hepburn makes this thing work. Arkin is a compelling villain to be sure but without her incomparable screen presence the audience would not be invested.
Felt like a Made for Tv movie. Alan Arkin was not believable as a villain. His acting didn't live up to his Catch -22 or "The In-Laws" performances.
It was ok. Pretty slow and dumb character choices
Wait Until Dark is a classic thriller. The cast is one of the main reasons this movie works so well. No one watching this film wants any harm to come to the beloved Audrey Hepburn and, on top of that, her character is blind, so she becomes even more vulnerable. And Alan Arkin plays the part of a cold and ruthless killer so well, you squirm whenever he's on the screen. Suspense is a constant presence as the story slowly unfolds, and the protagonists & antagonists figure things out and try to outsmart each other. This is one of the best Hitchcockian films that Alfred Hitchcock had nothing to do with.
This movie has been one of my favorites for a while. I recently rewatched it and didn't enjoy it as much as usual. It has a slow build-up and a predictable plot, however, it is a classic that I will always enjoy.
When I saw this film I was a small child…..I remember that scene near the end when the theatre had to be lit, the movie paused, and everyone assured they would be ok…….everyone screamed so loudly it felt as if the world ended. It is still my favorite suspense film ever. No special effects, no crazy storyline, no bad acting from actors that think they can act. Seeing it again as an adult did not diminish the feeling that I was watching an amazing tour de force! In a word: MASTERPIECE!
A unique idea that was able to overcome a lot of other weaknesses for this movie. The acting is at times atrocious and a lot of the characters make chooses that make literally no sense. It makes the film at times hard to watch. Though the idea for the plot is good the plot gets very stall towards the end. Definitely not a must watch. I'd skip it unless you have a really good reason to watch.
Terrance Young's screen adaptation of Frederick Knott's play is well-crafted and enjoyable. Audrey Hepburn takes on a different role to play a blind woman in a precarious situation and surprisingly pulls it off brilliantly. Her vulnerability resonates with the audience, and her solid performance transcends their expectations. The film succeeds in maintaining the nail-biting suspense that is essential for the plot to work, resulting in a satisfying ending.
A blind woman, a doll full of drugs, 3 guys want the doll, what more could you want in a movie plot? How about a cast of 5 big stars?
i'm actually impressed! i went in with low expectations & when it first started, the dialog didn't really make me think i should've done otherwise, but by the end i caught myself being a little on edge; it was quite good. Audrey was definitely the star - what an incredibly scary situation to be in. however, if i were blind & at home alone, i would be LOCKING that front door so people don't just sneak in all the time!! i cannot believe how many people just waltzed right through that door without knocking or announcing themselves - & it wasn't just the criminals!
One of the scariest films of its time and one of the greatest home invasion films ever made.
last 20 mins are truly terrifying a finale you won't forget wait until dark so easily.
80% rating ... Excellent acting from Audrey Hepburn in this suspenseful story. Highly encourage everyone to watch this film.
The abundance of overacting is the only thing that tops the implausible, nonsensical story in this convoluted mess of a movie. Very hokey and stilted. So many impossible to comprehend things happen in this movie that it is amazing anyone ever took this seriously. Gasoline is dumped all over a small enclosed room, then matches and torches of paper are lit amidst all the fumes and nothing happens? A doll stuffed with a small amount of heroin is desperately and painstakingly sought by people who never take the time to simply look for it, even though it is in the same room they are in the entire time? Laughable in many ways. High ratings are hard to understand for this awkwardly fumbling clunker.
