An amazing movie! Highly recommend! Multiple great moral messages throughout!

It's a schmaltzy and obvious sports drama that retells the aftermath of a tragedy. But I'll be goddamned if it isn't still effective. It pulls on the heartstrings in all the ways you would expect, so if you dig these kind of movies I'm sure you'll love it.

I love this film. It's a moving story that still brings me to tears, even after several viewings. Matthew McConaughey does a fine job of portraying a somewhat yokelish though irresistibly gung-ho football coach whose leadership and sensitivity succeed in restoring the broken spirit of a small West Virginia college town and what remains of its football team after 75 team members and their coaches are killed in a plane crash, a real life story that occurred in 1970. The movie is in the same genre as Hoosiers, another truly fine film about a small town underdog sports team, that one being about basketball, and will have you rooting and cheering in the same way, and weeping when your guys finally lick their demons and rise from the ashes. The supporting players all do a fine job, particularly David Strathairn and Anthony Mackie. Highly recommended. Small town Americana at its best.

I attend Marshall University, so this movie hits home for me, but besides some misinformation and things that didn't actually happen, this was a great film!

In November 1970, a plane crash killed 75 people associated with the Marshall's Thundering Herd football program, including coaches and a large number of players. We Are Marshall is the account of the aftermath of the horrific tragedy as newly-hired head coach Jack Lengyel (Matthew McConaughey) and his hastily assembled staff recruit a ragtag group of young players to play the game they love and to honor those who were lost. The story is compelling, the football action feels real, and the film's heart is always in the right place, but it sometimes feels as though it's trying too hard to be overly sentimental, most notably in scenes involving inspirational speeches enhanced by a swelling violin score. The most powerful shots are the most unadorned – assistant coach Red Dawson (Matthew Fox) sitting alone in silence in a deserted locker room after the first victory, for example. It is generally a decent film that pays homage to those lost in a terrible tragedy, but it just feels like it is trying too hard most of the time.

Matty Mac delivered one of his best performances in this one, did a tremendous job as the coach. Anthony Mackie was great as well. Kate Mara is a good addition to any movie. Not crazy about the performance by Mathew Fox as Red Dawson, but that’s one of the few things I didn’t like. Overall it’s a good cast and a good movie.

A very heartfelt true tragic story about a community that lost their entire football team through a tragic plane crash and now they must rebuild their team and community.

Led by fantastic performances and carried by a heartbreaking and inspiring story, "We Are Marshall" exceeds expectations set by previous films in the genre to deliver an emotionally driven sports drama. Acting was great by everyone, Mackie and McConoughey in particular, and definitely gave the film more impact and made it feel more grounded and realistic. The inspiring story that it is based off of also helps differentiate this film from other sports movies, giving it a more realistic and depressing tone when compared to the otherwise copy-pasted sports films. The sports sequences were done well, though I think that the focus was much more on the drama as opposed to the football aspect of it. Some of the characters were done very well, however, the overwhelming amount gets dizzying at times, and you never feel as emotionally connected to a few of them as the movie wants you to be. The film also does tend to fall into the standard sports movies clichés, especially toward the third act of the film. It also doesn't really seem like the final game has much weight in terms of the opposing team, making the stakes not so much focused on if the protagonists are going to win or not, but rather if they will be able to honour their previous team's efforts. Overall, I think that the sports side of this movie really drags it down, however, it is still an emotionally compelling and inspiring movie with good acting and a great message at the end.

I don't understand the negative reviews from some of the critics listed here, the most recent by Richard Propes, TheIndependentCritic.com. This was an absolutely fantastic movie! The 1970 plane crash that killed 75 people from the same small college town was a catastrophic loss which effected every single person in that town. There have been other catastrophes killing more, but few have affected so many colleagues, families and friends simultaneously and the very heart of an entire community. More than your average heroic, "against all odds" sports story, this movie tells the story of monumental "survivor's guilt" and tremendous loss. It illustrates the heroism involved in getting past the grief, getting "back on the horse", moving on with life and the ultimate triumph over that loss and grief. A must see, especially in these times (2020-2021), when so many have lost so much. Great cast, great direction, great story, great inspiration, great film. Don't miss it!

Matthew made earned all of my respect when he did this film. He perfectly honored those who we lost in this tragic incident and epitomized what it means to be a part of the herd. I love this film and the great state of West Virginia. Brings a tear to my eye every time I watch.

Maybe the most authentic McConaughey performance in that it feels like he's completely in his element in the role. Overall, this is a perfectly good sports movie. This cast is much too qualified a collection of actors to simply do "a perfectly good sports movie," though.

On the evening of November 14, 1970, Southern Airways Flight 932, a McDonnell Douglas DC-9 chartered by Marshall University to transport the Thundering Herd football team back to Huntington, West Virginia following their 17–14 defeat to the East Carolina University Pirates, clips trees on a ridge just one mile short of the runway at Tri-State Airport in Ceredo, West Virginia, and crashes into a nearby gully, killing all 75 people on board. The deceased include the 37 players; head coach Rick Tolley and five members of his coaching staff; Charles E. Kautz, Marshall's athletic director; team athletic trainer Jim Schroer and his assistant, Donald Tackett; sports information director and radio play-by-play announcer Gene Morehouse; 25 boosters; and five crew members. In the wake of the tragedy, University President Donald Dedmon (David Strathairn) leans towards indefinitely suspending the football program, but he is ultimately persuaded to reconsider by the pleas of the Marshall students and Huntington residents, and especially the few football players who didn't make the flight, led by Nate Ruffin. Dedmon hires Jack Lengyel (Matthew McConaughey) as head coach who, with the help of Red Dawson (Matthew Fox), one of two surviving members of the previous coaching staff) manages to rebuild the team in a relatively short time, despite losing many of their prospects to West Virginia University. Dedmon travels to Kansas City, where he pleads with the NCAA to waive their rule prohibiting freshmen from playing varsity football (a rule which had been abolished in 1968 for all sports except for football and basketball, and would be permanently abolished for those sports in 1972). Dedmon returns victorious. The new team is composed mostly of the 18 returning players (three varsity, 15 sophomores) and walk-on athletes from other Marshall sports programs. Due to their lack of experience, the "Young Thundering Herd" ends up losing its first game, 26–6, to the Morehead State Eagles. The loss weighs heavily on Dawson and Ruffin, who had been hurt on the first play of the game. The Herd's first post-crash victory is a 15–13 win against Xavier University in the first home game of the season... The film received mixed reviews from critics. Rotten Tomatoes consensus stating: "Matthew McConaughey almost runs We Are Marshall to the end zone, but can't stop it from taking the easy, feel-good route in memorializing this historic event in American sports." The film's directing was criticized by many reviewers. Peter Hartlaub, from the San Francisco Chronicle, blamed director McG for "half of the movie problems" and went further on saying that "He has a kinetic and kitschy style that could make next year's "Hot Wheels" movie a surprise hit, but he's completely out of place here." Peter Howell from the Toronto Star said the film lacked genuine drama or conflict. McConaughey's performance was, according to some critics, one of the film's highlights. Roger Moore from the Orlando Sentinel gave it 4 stars out of 5 and said in his review that "We Are Marshall (it's the rally cry of the team) doesn't always have a handle on the grief, but it does keep emotions close to the surface. That allows McConaughey to be the most refreshing, funny and believable he ever has been." "We Are Marshall" is an emotional true story that never goes over that thin line between strong drama and silly melodrama in my book at least. It depicts the aftermath of the 1970 plane crash that killed 75 people: 37 football players on the Marshall University Thundering Herd football team, along with five coaches, two athletic trainers, the athletic director, 25 boosters, and a crew of five. We get a great cast, a super soundtrack and the film has been nicely shot and edited. You get immersed in the story and it moved me at least.

A great feel good movie done in taste and respect. Anyone that says different is probably going home to kick their dog and beat their wife.

The film is most interesting when it is examining the loss of each individual so dear to those lost, and then how it affected an entire town. The football part didn’t hit as hard for me. Plus the run time was a little stretched due to some unnecessary additional characters. Not the best sports film but certainly has heart

Matthew McConaughey carries the film with his performance.

One of my favorite movies ever! 💚💚💚

The script finds nothing new to say and fails to balance the full wight of the tragedy with the Football elements. With a cast this fantastic it should have been better.
