Wendell & Wild Reviews

Overall, Wendell and Wild is a solid entry point for introducing kids to horror.

| Original Score: 7.5/10 | Jul 12, 2024

From Selick’s classic mixture of the macabre and the whimsical in three dimensional stop-motion to shadow plays and some incredible paper cut-out art, the film is a wonder to behold.

In 2009, it was considered almost shocking when Pixar’s Up addressed the subject of death... But while that door is now open, Henry Selick’s Wendell & Wild finds inventive ways to blow the hinges off.

| Sep 25, 2023

Selick manages to leave the audience with scares and spooky demons and hopefully, Wendell & Wild will be a memorable movie to watch during Halloween.

Everything from the character designs to the character animation, the production design, the visual effects, the texture of every single building, material, or cloth, the dynamic camerawork is so good that you must pause every frame and appreciate it.

| Original Score: 5/5 | Jul 20, 2023

Wendell & Wild, unfortunately, falls short of its ambitions, even if its themes are handled with care, the animation is as vivid as possible, and the voice cast does a great job at bringing its characters to light.

| Original Score: C+ | Jun 26, 2023

The film is sometimes clunky and sloppy, but the characters are so unconventional and the animation is so impressive that this animated story of demons and grief should be celebrated for its uniqueness, if nothing else.

| Jan 21, 2023

While it feels very familiar at first, the screenplay travels its expected paths towards a conclusion that is well crafted and emotionally fulfilling.

| Original Score: 3.5/4 | Jan 7, 2023

The stop animation alone is historic, intricate and uniquely Afrocentric, which will make it an instant classic. Peele’s inspired satirical digs welcomingly promoting the importance of protest and resistance is fire!

There is only one character in all this mess I could relate to, and that is Kat, and she has disdain for everyone except her parents. This ugly, stop-motion animated film fails to establish its other characters, or give them believable motivations.

| Original Score: D+ | Dec 28, 2022

This is a very different from what this legendary director has done with his previous stop motion works. But the story is very important and the tragedy of it allows for a certain level of healing even for adults. The animation & voice acting are great

| Original Score: 8/10 | Dec 26, 2022

Kat is styled with a punk sensibility which will appeal to young viewers tired of old fashioned notions about how young heroes ought to look and behave.

| Original Score: 3.5/5 | Dec 21, 2022

Flawed it is, but Wendell & Wild is tonic for the soul of those who love watching stop-motion at its very best. A warming story of outsiders, identity and politics.

| Original Score: 3 / 5 | Dec 14, 2022

Wendell & Wild has an unsettling look, with odd-shaped faces and bodies full of sharp edges and hinges.

| Original Score: 3/4 | Dec 5, 2022

For a movie about 2 demons, it should have had more of those 2 demons. Neither Wendell nor Wild have much to their characters except wisecracks and a devoted lack of motivation, and once in the Land of the Living, they become pawns instead of plot-points

| Original Score: 2.5/5 | Nov 23, 2022

The draw is Selick’s jaw-dropping animation, which is literally out of this world in taking a deep dive into a realm filled with ghouls and zombies selfishly feeding off the living.

| Original Score: B | Nov 15, 2022

Wendell & Wild is an absolute delight and something great to rewatch again and again -- maybe even add it in as a staple in your Halloween queue.

| Original Score: 4/5 | Nov 14, 2022

Peele and Selick’s script is so heavily weighted toward an engagement with current events that it’s hard to see this film as belonging to anything but a content mill.

| Nov 14, 2022

Wendell & Wild is gorgeous, daringly creative, and stunning to watch.

Sometimes there’s too many cooks in the kitchen. Sometimes there are too many storylines in a movie. Same difference.
