Western Stars Reviews
I saw this movie in an extremely socially distanced playhouse/theater. I loved feeling I was in the room and the sweeping, cinematic music.
A stunning achievement for the boss and we are the beneficiaries! The atmosphere, the orchestra, the narratives between songs and his performance itself were flawless. A must see even for the casual Bruce fan. Parts of it were so beautiful that they actually brought me to tears
Beautiful in every possible way. This poet, philosopher, great singer songwriter never stops amazing me. At 70 he exudes the strengh and kindness of a good man who has had his ups and downs. I am 61 in 2012 my then 22 year old daughter and I attended a Sprinsteen concert. He is the best live artist of all time...he created a bonding experience with my daughter that was priceless! Now we will share his film his beautiful poetic masterpiece,
It's not that this movie is original but it's the underlying spirit of the album that Mr Springsteen put out. I'm nearing middle age and he's nearing the end of the road so we're both thinking about the same stuff. The older we get the more often we look back and wish to harvest, bottle or maintain something from a bygone age but it's so ethereal it slips through our hands. My dad died in 2004 of a massive coronary and was dead before he hit the floor. Naturally, it was a shock for our heroes never die, well at least we can hide within our denial until we can no longer deny the reality. Well my dad loved country & western music - the good old Johnny Cash, Kris Kristofferson, Hank Snow etc so when I saw 'Western Stars' the title it stirred a buried memory and I was forced to watch this show put on by Mr. Springsteen and although it's extremely melancholic, it is life and I want to thank the Boss for putting this together.
Bruce Springsteen found a theatrical, proper form for his new album that sort-of acts like a concert film from its setting when it's actually only a commemorative film for the album just to spiritually project imagery and reflections in between his listings which his fans/frequent listeners will love, as well newcomers tapping their feet and find his crafted storytelling praiseworthy. (B+)
It’s a really good full length album, music video. No more ... no less. Your enjoyment level will be directly aligned with how much you enjoy Bruce’s new material.
The album was one of those that I didn't really care for, other than a few songs, when I first heard it. But after about 10 times through, I really started to love it. When I saw this movie everything came together and the movie version is on the top of my playlist. This is unlike anything that has been done before, and it's brilliant.
We went to this movie without a clue what to expect. AMAZING! Is all we had to say. It's not the type of " movie " you usually sit through. It's more of a bio about his music life and a woman who brought him back from self destruction. We felt as if we were there with them. Beautiful scenery. Go see this.
This film is beautifully illustrated, I loved the music and the sound was brilliant, I have always been a Springsteen fan and it continues to this day.
What a beautiful movie!! ...incredible artist, amazing performances, Bruce and his wise words make you speechless!
The album "Western Stars" is maybe somewhat singular in Springsteen's career, because it's not a rock n' roll album, but it's not a surprise for those who loved his album "We Shall Overcome: The Seeger Sessions", released in 2006. In the same way as the Boss had made an incursion into folk music, adapting and performing traditional songs for "The Seeger Sessions", he decided to make a record that is not a rock n' roll album and that is widely open to other genres, including country music. Directed by Bruce Springsteen and Thom Zimny, the movie was filmed in an old barn of New Jersey, that belongs to the artist, and in the Californian desert. While the concert takes places in the upper part of the barn, the desert is where the artist is putting into words his thouhts while travelling by car or being with his horse. In the barn, Bruce Springsteen performs all the songs of his new album, accompanied by more than 30 musicians and by his wife, Patti Scialfa. We can listen to a lot of fiddle, in all the songs, but also piano, accordion for the catchy "Sleepy Joe's cafe", and pedal steel for several songs, particularly "Western Stars" and for the beautiful "Chasin' Wild Horses". We have a moving performance of "There Goes My Miracle" and also an amazing cover of "Rhinestone Cowboy" (the song was not included in the album). If Bruce Springsteen showed his love for folk songs with "The Seeger Sessions", "Western Stars" is undoubtedly the most important path that made the Boss towards country music. The Californian part of the movie is also very interesting. Bruce Springsteen explains the making of "Western Stars" and details the songwriting and the meaning of each song. He talks about his life, his career, his fears, what makes him happy and about the most important: the miracle of love. In the middle of the desert, with beautiful landscape perfectly filmed, he also talks about his country and gives his vision of both sides of America: the individual freedom and the importance of the community and of the family. Western Stars is a brilliant and beautiful movie!
Perfect companion to the album. An intimate concert on the big screen. A love story to his wife and to his fans. Loved it. Must see for every fan of the Boss and good music.
Western Stars: I think this one is just for Bruce fans. It’s gorgeously shot, and there are a some poignant moments, but mostly it’s just awkward interstitials mixed with decent song performances. I’m sure Bruce fans will love it, otherwise 🤷🏻♂️
LOVED IT!!!! AMAZING!!!!!!
Pure Bruce the composer. Great sounding 40 piece orchestra. Its like attending a very big House concert. I didnt really get his last album Western Stars, then I saw this movie.
Springsteen fans (yours truly) will enjoy his latest album, and while some songs works better than others for the material they are serving, the stories around them should have been expanded a little more to really land the emotional gutpunch it tries going for.
