Wham! Reviews

We’re so used to the flotsam and jetsum of angst, bad blood and rancour in the ocean of pop history, that the positive energy of the Wham! documentary feels as welcome as a summer breeze.

| Original Score: 4/5 | Apr 4, 2024

As a fan piece “Wham!” works pretty well. It highlights the bands ups while steering mostly clear of the downs, and it’s full of the music fans love. But as a meatier documentary it falls a little short.

| Original Score: 2.5/5 | Jul 29, 2023

I used to think of Andrew Ridgeley, one half of the pop duo Wham!, as this lucky guy who had hitched his cart to George Michael. Turns out, the real story is far more interesting.

| Original Score: 3.5/4 | Jul 27, 2023

For anyone that might not know about Wham! and what made this band special, WHAM! is a worthwhile documentary to watch for its presentation of a musical act struggling with fame.

I enjoyed this film and learned quite a lot about Wham!

Netflix's bouncy 'Wham!' offers an inside account of the '80s duo's meteoric rise, sudden end, and not much else.

| Original Score: 3/5 | Jul 21, 2023

It’s safe to say that, given the arc Smith’s filmography has demonstrated over the better part of the past thirty years, “Wham!” fits in perfectly..

| Original Score: A | Jul 21, 2023

Chris Smith masterfully captures the playful energy and warm relationship between George and Andrew, two friends who had as much fun onstage as offstage. [Full review in Spanish]

| Original Score: 8/10 | Jul 20, 2023

A nostalgic and highly entertaining musical documentary.

| Original Score: B | Jul 20, 2023

Wham! will, of course, please fans of the duo and George Michael but will also offer plenty for casual viewers wanting to learn more about one of Britain’s biggest musical exports of the 1980s; full of heart and charm and plenty of humour.

| Original Score: 4/5 | Jul 19, 2023

Like the iconic duo, Wham! doesn't last long but the good feeling lingers. [Full review in Spanish]

| Original Score: 3.5/5 | Jul 17, 2023

A feel-good buddy movie, drenched in the Piña Colada-optimism of the 1980s, fizzing with all the youthful exuberance of an unabashedly teenage zeitgeist.

| Original Score: 4/5 | Jul 14, 2023

... A documentary that focuses on the relatively ephemeral euphoria of what it was, according to a New Musical Express poll in 2008, "the best all-time boy band," above Backstreet Boys and NSYNC. [Full review in Spanish]

| Original Score: 3/5 | Jul 14, 2023

Wham! inadvertently becomes a music documentary without much interest in music. Like the band themselves, this is a breezy watch, but if there's profundity beneath the perms and the cut-offs, the film struggles to find it.

| Original Score: 2/5 | Jul 13, 2023

Looks beyond the froth and bubble of the band’s image to focus on the price stardom and ambition can exact...An extremely well-made and respectful nostalgia trip,

| Original Score: 3.5/5 | Jul 13, 2023

Lighthearted documentary captures the youthful energy of the band as they set out to conquer the world.

| Original Score: 4/5 | Jul 11, 2023

Even as there are some moments where it can fall into feeling like a greatest hits recap of the group that dances along the surface of the story, the more complicated reflections it offers on their lives and music cuts quite a bit deeper when it counts.

| Original Score: B+ | Jul 11, 2023

Will not go down as one of the great music docs but where it does succeed is detailing the tale of a genuine friendship where proper credit is given and nothing but love is exchanged in a story with inner drama but never one of jealousy and regret.

| Original Score: 3/4 | Jul 11, 2023

As entertaining as these littered anecdotes, and WHAM! as a whole, can be, the film also scans as fairly one-note in execution due to Smith’s formal monotony.

| Jul 9, 2023

If all you want from the film is a kind of nostalgic pep pill... you’ll find that the movie totally scratches than itch. But “Wham!” is also a fascinating music documentary that’s telling two stories at once.
