Great great acting. One of my favorite movies. This is a must watch in your lifetime.

Classic drama, didn’t seem big when I was growing up but as I’ve gotten older more people seem to know about it. Love Leo’s performance and the whole cast play their part marvellously

Absolutely Beautiful! I would have cried, but I don cry often so I didn't. The performances were simply splendid. Shoutout to Leonardo DiCaprio, great job, keep up the good work. Everyone was great and I loved it. I noticed if you go to the scene where Becky is in the water and gets Gilbert to go in her hair is wet in a shot and a second later it isn't when it shows it from a different angle. I'm not trying to be rude or anything, I'm just pointing it out. Anyway, this was a work of art. Also I would like to say good job to everyone who worked on the film because I know that you don't get as much recognition even though you also put in a lot of work. Thanks.

Well acted, especially a young DiCaprio. The plot is thin but it’s more about character development or something. Actually I’m not sure what it’s about really but it made for pleasant enough viewing. Saw it in Great Movies channel.

Great story, great film making. Some of my favourite actors at their best. A classic 90s must see that has stood the test of time!

I lasted 10 minutes - no, not watching this tripe. As if ordinary nobodies would be an interesting story. I had the same trouble trying to read catcher in the rye Zero interest - watching grass grow would be far more entertaining.

A beautiful story about Gilbert, a young man who feels stuck and unsatisfied, burdened and ashamed of his family. What amazing performances, especially from DiCaprio and Darlene Cates, and one of my favourite movie endings ever. An absolute masterpiece that will stay with you forever.

All of the casts r perfect for their roles in this movie. Esp, Arnie acted his role for the best, I've ever seen. There's the two scene that touched my heart. One is, When Gilbert slaps Arnie, Arnie can changed the perfect face that suit with of his feeling. N Two is, when their mom died, they burned down their house for her. I rly Love the movie. It my fav ever 90 th movie.

The "eating" of this film is meticulously portrayed as a slow buildup of corrosive feelings in Gilberts mind. With all the external issues he struggles with throughout his life, he meets an unforeseen temporary "angel guardian" who permanently redirects his intended future.

It is late on a weekday night and I am feeling wistful and nostalgic for my youth. For the crushes, for dirt toads, cutback, country town. For the limitations of being young, which makes every escape so vivid, wild, and precious. For the dream of adventure, and the endless spirit for it. The complexity of this film beyond what I'm describing is phenomenal. The unacknowledged responsibility and self-service of Gilbert and Amy. The subtle and perfect reflection of small town life. Wow. I could so FEEL what it is like to be the characters. I can still feel the lingering body sensations. This film hit the spot tonight. I am so moved.

Don't expect the traditional movie formula of - EXPOSITION, CONFLICT, RISING ACTION, CLIMAX, FALLING ACTION, and RESOLUTION. This is a heart-felt movie of watching the day to day life of a struggling rural family that many families can identify with. Its a movie about real life, real day to day struggles, and learning to deal with emotions in a complex family unit in a small town. It's not a Saturday night movie. It's a Thursday night movie.

Boring, over-rated and lacking any kind of spunk!!

This is probably the worst adaptation to the screen of a book that I've ever seem. Just awful, wretched. I laughed until I cried reading the book. I just wanted to cry watching this terrible movie.

Leonardo DiCaprio is a legend in this film. Johnny Depp also a great actor in this one. But supporting cast is also great! A must see!

An All Time Classic Film. The Acting by everyone is truly phenomenal especially Arnie & Gilbert. The cinematography is excellent capturing very fine detailed shots of everyone in the families reactions and also sweeping shots of the isolated lonely surrounding. The editing is very well done with just some minor loss of focus in the middle but with good reason. The Pacing is excellent with the film doing a fantastic job in the first 30 minutes allowing us to feel the weight that Gilbert carries and from there slowly feel the struggle to lift that burden and feel joy when we see it lifted over time. This is a truly sincere and heartfelt film that never crosses over into purposely pulling on the heartstrings to make up for a lack of substance but does because you love these characters and become invested in them. This is a film everyone should see once. An All Time Classic.

This is a surprisingly touching film about a dysfunctional rural American family, with some pretty quirky characters and a number of now big name actors, including Johnny Depp as the titular character, Gilbert, and carer for the disabled brother, Arnie, played by Leonardo DiCaprio and John C. Reilly (of Stan & Ollie fame etc.), who plays 'Tucker Van Dyke' (a local). I also recognised Mary Steenburgen, as Better Carver - she may be more well known as the mother in the short lived US show 'Zoey's Extraordinary Playlist'. At first this film seemed no more than ok but by the end, I thought it had become really rather poignant. Its a bit hard to review in depth, without giving away spoilers but I'd say its a good film in terms of depicting how difficult teenage carers may find things, when having to look after disabled siblings and parents. There is a sad side to it and there are some mildly amusing moments too. All in all, its a fairly thoughtful watch, one I'd recommend if your interested in the story or particularly keen on the cast then I'd say it's worth seeing, yes. I certainly can't say I've seen Leonardo DiCaprio in quite such a similar role before, certainly.

One of the best films I think I've ever seen, a classic, and the acting by Depp and Di Caprio was fantastic. I could watch this over and over and still not be tired of it. Tender, heartwarming, sad, endearing. You name it, it had all the qualities of an almost perfect film.
