Widows Reviews

McQueen sets a relentlessly portentous tone and employs lots of stark mise-en-scene, but all the fuss feels arbitrary here - the pulpy story simply doesn't warrant such grave stylization.

| Feb 24, 2020

A thriller for modern women who identify more with the messiness of human lives than with flattened slogans about how great women, as a monolithic group, are.

| Mar 8, 2019

There can be power in kindness and in camaraderie alongside crime and corruption, and that is the nuance, the depth, and the politics Widows provides.

| Feb 7, 2019

It would be wrong to place all the credit on the script when every element of Widows expresses character and theme with intelligence and concision.

| Jan 26, 2019

It's the dashing camerawork and broad historical awareness of Widows that makes it a truly sophisticated action film, and by far the best crime movie of 2018 so far.

| Dec 1, 2018

It offers everything adults used to love about cinema.

| Nov 28, 2018

That essential jolt of satisfaction is missing.

| Original Score: 2.5/5 | Nov 27, 2018

With its themes of political corruption and large-scale criminal activity, Widows is effortlessly transformed into an American setting.

| Original Score: 4.5/5 | Nov 26, 2018

It's rare to come across a film that is both brilliant and brilliantly entertaining.

| Original Score: 5/5 | Nov 25, 2018

It's knotty and tense to watch as all the pieces fall into place, but nonetheless electrifying.

| Nov 20, 2018

The movie tosses back at viewers a variety of casual exasperations-inchoate, flip, and manipulable-that flatten and simplify the very ills and grievances that it dramatizes.

| Nov 19, 2018

It's not clear exactly what kind of movie(s) Widows wants to be: feminist heist thriller? Sprawling political saga? Bare-knuckled gangster noir?

| Original Score: C+ | Nov 18, 2018

A gritty romp that makes the cliché-prone heist genre feel fresh again.

| Original Score: 3/4 | Nov 16, 2018

A cast this stacked can't help but generate glory.

| Original Score: 3.5/5 | Nov 16, 2018

Enough quality action and surprises to keep it interesting.

| Original Score: 2/5 | Nov 16, 2018

Other reviewers talk about the film's style and originality, but I found no evidence of either (unless you consider endless shots of reflections in mirrors and glass store windows "style").

| Original Score: 2/4 | Nov 16, 2018

Widows is filled with wild beauty, heart-thumping grotesquerie and even some good ol' soapy treachery.

| Nov 16, 2018

The movie isn't interested in being about women, or even womanhood, so much as the specific women we watch mature from partners of convenience into true equals. And yet these people aren't a mere substitute for an archetypal male character.

Davis is superb as Veronica. Her grief is palpable. Her pain is omnipresent.

| Original Score: 3.5/4 | Nov 16, 2018

'Widows' is a good movie, if not a great one, with an excellent cast. Incidentally, my wife and daughter saw all the movie's story twists and reveals coming a mile away. I did not. Is that evidence of female intuition? Perhaps.
