Wild Reviews

Watched this twice while at a hospital. My kidney stones had more personality than this. Ok, now to be serious, this movie goes nowhere and has nothing to tell. There is a reason nobody talks about this movie and it doesn't show up in any list whatsoever. Its mostly for women that want the true story feel. Its a compilation of depressing stuff where the journey is the goal. If you like to watch a downer with some lifeless tacked on romance in between, go for it. Have there been movies that have been much much better at this telling a journey and entertaining with a soul at the same time? Yes - see Trainspotting, or American Beauty, or Benjamin Button, even Dallas Buyers Club if you want another depressing shlock. Has this been Reese Witherspoons best performance? No, but it wants you to belive it is. The camera work is as boring and mundane as the entire thing. Watch something else.

This is easily one of Reese Witherspoon's best films and one of my favorite movies. It has an 88% approval rating, but it should be higher than that, because it just has excellent storytelling from start to finish.

I'd avoided this for sooooo long, irrationally pre-judging that with RW in the lead role of what I perceived to be a survivalist story, it would be a long and tiresome movie. Thankfully - having now watched it, I am proven wrong! This is a tender exploration of relationships, self, choices, grief, and using a significant journey as a life event to work through all of the aforementioned and more. RW and LD are superb leads, bringing tenderness, compassion, independence and spirit to a story that starts from sad and dark places. As the hike progresses, Cheryl's quest to find herself and heal unfolds, and is supported by some potentially scary and unnerving encounters with people she meets along the way. It seems to end suddenly, giving us a summary of what her life became after this life-changing and soul-strengthening adventure

Yeah It's a great movie about a great story.

Wild gives us one of Resse Witherspoon's best performances, if not the best of her career. The direction and script are incredible, and the photography is beautiful, being a fundamental part of telling the story of Reese's character overcoming. Who has never wanted to abandon everything and embark on a journey of discovery, or rediscovery, in the midst of nature? During the film, we literally follow the character step by step towards the challenge imposed by herself, while scenes from the past are revealed, so that we can understand the reason for such a sacrifice. Several scenes were impactful, for me, however, the most touching, without a doubt, was the one in which a little boy walking through the forest sings a song, when he comes across the character of Reese. Without a doubt, an intimate, touching and powerful film, which is worth watching and rewatching.

Beauty. This movie highlights the beauty of the journey of life and how we should learn to appreciate the bad and the good of what happens to us. Life is short and we grow from it All. Reese is fantastic.

Witherspoon gives her best performance in years here, it's just too bad the film is mostly conventional as it lays out it's thesis statement a little too clearly through unnecessary voice over and flashbacks.

One of the reasons America is great is because you can make many bad decisions in your life and still come out on top because of those bad decisions (including undertaking an 11-hundred mile hike alone). That being stated, I did enjoy the movie. Great job by star and director and the scenery was pretty good too. I just couldn't find any empathy for the lead character.

I don't necessarily think that Wild hits quite the emotional high that it sets out to, but it's a very enjoyable movie with a good sense of the feeling that adventure provides. It's a beautifully shot movie and Witherspoon is really good here. Nothing spectacular, but certainly worth my time.

Overall, a truly enamoring and praiseworthy film. I was left stunned by each performance and felt every sense of empathy; towards each character introduced. Technical aspects, such as the cinematography or pacing were also incredibly noteworthy. Great film and will be recommending to others.

moving and inspiring, but focuses on conveying facts rather than emotions. a must watch to remember we all go through dark periods and should accept our actions as being the best we could do at the time. judging ourselves and being harsh never helps.

2-hour tale that never gets boring, though some scenes of the protagonist's memory seems to repeat themselves. A "road movie" in which the character walks a thousand-mile trail. Maybe one could say some characters were just not so fully developed, but this is sometimes the reality - one keeps meeting people just briefly, even if intensely, and then moves on. We watched this on a day a friend tragically died on a trail in Peru. Unsurprising that Witherspoon and Dern got nominations for Oscars. Gaby Hoffmann, an actress I didn't know, stood out in both this movie & C'mon C'mon, which we recently also watched and which also is a top movie. Possibly wasn't on my Bucket list because it's from 2014 - most movies on that list are a bit more recent. So glad Star+ recommended it!

Another movie with a protagonist walking a challenge-distance, reflecting on their life as lived, having experiences, and learning about themselves.

I expected very little from this movie. I just wanted an outdoor adventure, a true one. I got that and a tear-pulling wonder.

Not sure why this movie is rated high. It entertains and it's interesting in parts. While she has a sad story, who hasn't experienced the death of a loved one? And there are many people who have hiked the Pacific Crest Trail too so that isn't worthy of a movie alone. I could not empathize with the character because her self-destructive ways not only hurt herself but her spouse as well whom she cheated on constantly while doing hard drugs. The most moving scene in the entire movie was that of the little boy singing "Red River Valley" to her on the trail. In the end, I was left thinking she was a narcissistic, self-flagellating young woman who hiked a trail after she had made a mess of her life.

I knew this was primarily a psychological journey, and a pretty traumatic one at that. It seemed like she was stuck in the past and could rarely get out of her head. It wasn't clear if she overcame her fears, even though she did persevere to her goal on the hike. I was hoping for more of the experiences in the wilderness and how that transformed her. She never seemed to get comfortable in her own skin. I guess I expected it to be a little more uplifting.

This is one of my favorite movies ever! Definitely on of Reese's best! Her journey was heartfelt & challenging.

If you have ever lost someone and understood the feeling of trying to find a sense of purpose or even just to find a reason to go on in your life, this movie is for you. Discovering that even though life may deliver you hardship, and things that you will never understand why they had to happen. Through those trials, you can still find yourself. This movie is based on a woman who lost her way after losing the love of her life, her mother. Which is ultimately an escape through nature, drugs, and sex. Until truly finding herself.

Reese Witherspoon gives what is arguably her finest performance in Wild, the story of Cheryl Strayed, a young woman struggling to come to terms with the death of her mother. Numbed by drug abuse and meaningless sex, she embarks on a hike on the Pacific Crest Trail, a journey that takes her from the Mexican border to Washington state, in an effort to come to terms with her loss and redefine herself. By turns touching and harrowing, the film uses flashbacks effectively to pinpoint the source of her sorrow. The beautiful cinematography captures the beauty of the landscape - barren deserts, rugged mountain terrain, and lush rainforest. The scene of the young boy singing Red River Valley to Strayed is as poignant as anything one could imagine.

Only a couple of notes, simple and inconsequential, in a film that is supposed to be transcendental, bathe a proposal that is sometimes too cold and not very exciting.
