Winchester Reviews

Buena película, cumple el objetivo del género: Asustar. Buenas actuaciones, musicalización ad-hoc ambientación inquietante. La recomiendo.

One of very few horror movies I was able to tolerate in that it wasn't all jump scares, gore, and nonsense... an actual storyline and a very pleasant ending that had some genuine emotion tied in... most of these reviews pander on about how bad it was without actually giving a legitimate reason but that's because there is no reason. If you have a heart and good taste in a story with horror mixed in well then this is the movie for you!

A bumbling story, countless clichés and way too many ineffective jump scares far outweigh the decent performances, great setting and costume design. A real shame as it shows promise in its best moments.

I have no idea if this is even remotely similar to the actual house's history, [as I've never looked into it] but it made for a really fun movie! A troubled shrink has to stay at the supposedly-haunted house, as he evaluates Mrs. Winchester's mental state for her company...only to find the hauntings are quite real..and quite personal. I greatly appreciated the movies coherent systems...why the house is like that, why the spirits are here, and how to deal with them are all well explained. And doctor-guy's direct connection to the house made for an interesting twist, and a nice character arc...leading to a satisfying resolution. The movie's horror leans a bit too much on it's jumpscares, but maybe that was inevitable when the horror has an good explanation. Even though this film about one of Americas scariest places... isn't particularly scary... it was very well thought-out and executed. It looked great, was acted well, had good effects...Everything's darn good overall! At some point, I'll look into the actual house, and then re-watch this to see if it holds up, but as it is now, I really liked it!

The 2010 version of the "The Haunted Mansion" it felt so similar but most of the story elements and effects were done slightly better. I may not be a Winchester puritan. But I've been to the mansion a good many times (mostly for their Halloween haunts which never disappoint). It's difficult to tell at times what this movie is supposed to pull off, anytime the story gets scary/disturbing it doesn't feel that connected to the story, their just trying to remind you it's haunted and nothing else. But it was far from offensive. Jason Clarke and Helen Miller both did an amazing job, and the overall production wasn't terrible, it just wasn't strictly speaking new.

oh baby nooo, why yall make this

I watched this movie 2 days after I watched Pet Sematary [2019] but I didn't know Jason Clarke was in it. I found the movie interesting and it kept me wondering what was going to happen because I found this movie confusing at first. The movie is another haunted house movie but I really like the new ones for some reason. I found this one also different to watch and really suspenseful. Very good movie.

Very enjoyable movie. I don’t usually like horror movies but I do like ones based on “real” events.

Sarah Lockwood Pardee Winchester 1886-1922 was a bad ass woman. She was an artist, inspired, rich, and eccentric. She was heavy into spiritualism, and an early adaptor to updating technology, even as far as being accredited for many of the houses inventions that was well ahead of their time. The history of the Mystery House is as twisted as the house itself is. Well worth the time spent researching it. Honestly, I'm kind of shocked that they didn't explore doing a horror movie about this place any sooner. I'm also really disappointed that this wasn't a NETFLIX serial exploring the ghosts that haunt the house, trapping them, and helping them find peace and move on. Like some kind of hybrid monster mashup between 13 Ghosts, Ghostbusters, Haunting at Hill House, and Scooby-Doo. Honestly, that would have probably made for a much more satisfying product. ------------------SPOILER WARNING!!!--------------------------------------- If you do not like spoilers, do NOT continue reading. Avert your eyes, and move along. Still here? Good. Let's dive in. Why the 1.5 stars? Because at it's core it's a horror movie, and when it comes to horror movies this thing pulls every cliched stunt imagenable. It moves from one jumpscare to another in a manner that is completely predictable. The first 20 minutes has the doctor character messing with a mirror that keeps moving on him. It's a full rule of 3. Mirror moves, he resets it. Mirror moves, he resets it. Mirror moves... oh no.. here it comes... JUMP SCARE! The story takes advantage of the historical fact that Sarah considered herself to be cursed by the spirits that were killed by her families guns. This is her motives for the constant construction on the house, and her profound rebuking of the use of firearms. So it's just lazy writing that guns are setup to be a big no no from the very start of the movie, and shooting a ghost with a gun ends up being how the hero's win the day. I mean come the fuck on! Couldn't you have used blessed water, or a Ouija Board, or some other cliche? This is just the epitome of lazy writing. The acting, for what the movie is, isn't bad. The history is more interesting than the plot, and the score is fairly forgettable. I've seen worse. This isn't the most offensive movie I've ever seen. It's just a shame that they had some serious potential here, and I feel it was wasted.

This movie is an enjoyable watch. But what is really fascinating is ticking off all of the historical inaccuracies. The most glaring example: the main spectral antagonist is a vengeful Confederate soldier whose brothers were killed in the Civil War with the Winchester rifle. Impossible. The Winchester Repeating Arms Company was not founded until 1866, a year after the Civil War ended. The Winchester rifle is actually infamous for its use against native Americans in the old west, and the real Sarah Winchester's guilt over that fact is a true story. I guess those facts were too politically charged to touch.

Any movie starring Helen Mirren is worth watching, and this one is no exception.

The real Winchester Mystery House is downright nutty: stairs that lead to nowhere in a house that sprawls out without any rhyme or reason. The film "inspired" by the house is a dull, inert tale of ghosts in a haunted house that's stuck in neutral most of the time... until a ridiculous final act.

The Actress and House are Legend... This film is a Legendary fail So much wasted potential on what could have been epic

I went and saw the house today and went in the tour. Amazing house and Sarah Winchester was a remarkable woman… liked the backstory but the whole thing about the dead people was kinda dumb, repetitive and bland music. The actors were fine but the writing kinda sucked. I was falling asleep. Seeing the different parts if the house in the movie was all I stuck around for…

I've lived 10 minutes from the Winchester House most of my adult life and have toured the house several times over the years. I love the place but wish this movie had lived up to the glorious thing it is. It's so fun to see some of the rooms on film because I know them! But, they put none of the wonderful oddities to work here. Except perhaps the scene of Sarah walking through the wall and out of an armoire! The actors had nothing to work with as the story line and direction is so poor. Helen Mirren is too good for this and the Mystery House deserves better. What a shame. It could have been a marvelous movie, but as it is folks; I'd skip the movie and take the physical tour when next you come to visit us in San Jose. 5 stars for the house. 2 stars for this dead film.

A very typical ghost film which includes a character connected to spirits, a skeptic who eventually becomes convinced and a possessed child. Overall, not badly made but not adding anything new to the genre.

This horror movie "Winchester" had no real firing power, it was more like watching a low pressure water gun filled with pipi.

Oh boy. I love the idea of diving into a fictional version of Winchester house, but … they really shot themselves in the foot. Could use some different lighting design, directing, some ACT 1 editing for sure.

Although it wasn't the most frightening movie I've seen, I did enjoy the movie overall. I thought it was a decent narrative of the Winchester mystery.
