Winter in Wartime Reviews
A realistic war movie that will please even those who do not like the genre and/or subtitles. The young actor playing the lead is wonderful as are the rest of the cast.
I think people need to give this movie more credit than it has received. The kid, Michiel, had gone through hell for the Brit and at the end of the movie, the director does a fine job of contrasting the face of Michiel; being haggard, worn looking, versus the face of his friend who had not gone through the hell Michiel went through. Michiel's friend's face looks as fresh and youthful as it did at the beginning of the movie (taking in mind the years that went by). I think it was very well done and deserves a better rating than it currently has. Thanks.
Wonderfully made Dutch film carried by a 14 year old actor, who faces decisions on right and wrong, and betrayal. We thought it was excellent.
Another interesting WWII story. The filmmaking got a little in its own way, with the score trying way too hard. It was really overbearing and distracting at times.
Something came out real hard after a quite long while.
An oversimple tragedy of a young man told in a manner that's affecting only because its pacing and techniques are too familiar. For one that finds it too conventional, the suspense melts away, and the affection is lost. One is then left with slushy water to wallow in in this not-quite-solid sighful winter of a film.
Suspenseful story of a young boy desperate to play his part in fighting the Nazis during the 2nd world war. Well worth seeing.
10/13/14 StarzHD A compelling story of family, trust, courage, occupation and deceit. This was a really good story, if at times very sad and uncomfortable. You get a good sense of the difficulty of being occupied but a human sense that not all occupiers are heartless barbarians. You certainly root for a positive outcome for the Dutch teenager and his RAF friend while feeling the sadness he has to endure at such a young life. Excellent film.
An excellent wartime coming of age drama set in Nazi occupied Holland late in World War II. The story is powerful and well told. The acting is excellent. The settings and cinematography are outstanding. A very well directed and emotionally powerful movie.
Not only having a beautiful title and scene of white winter, "Winter In Wartime" successfully combines a touching War-melodrama with thriller elements. This film brings us to examine ourselves how to confront, betrayal and ally, courage and duplicity as surrounding us complexly.
Basing a movie during the war that focuses on a family in a occupied country is a sub genre of war film, and often turns out to be just a cheaper alternative. This movie isn't quite a movie about the resistance, rather a cheap war flick about being under rule of an opposing county. The acting, script and cinematography is pretty good, but it kinda falls short in plot. Helping a downed pilot is something we have seen a few times for sure, and this one isn't any better than others. The motorcycle chase after the horse drawn carriage is kinda dumb, and too unrealistic for this type of movie that otherwise try's to take the war seriously. The uncle who works for the Germans that the kid discovers is not really a wanted twist at all, and the end where he simply holds up the gun an shoots him was the worst thing they could have done, and something that when I realized it was a possible outcome, could only hope they wouldn't take the root. But in typical movie fashion they did, and just overdoes the kid who is already made to look to much of what could be called for a lack of a better name a action hero. Many scenes were too unbelievable, and everyone's ability to speak every language was also so. Other than these negative points the movie isn't bad, just glorified too much, but as a basic movie about the home front for enjoyment level and family friendly it's a good show, just strays to far from history for my liking.
Excellent film that portrays a young boy's abrupt coming of age in German occupied Holland during WWII. Movingly told.
Good human war drama. Climax was twisted and very suspenseful. 13 year old Michiel and British paratrooper Jack's friendship was wonderful. Music by great Pino Donaggio! (Carrie, The Howling) Good actors, very powerful story and great cinematography. If you like good Foreign movies, try this! Blu-ray's picture and sound quality was amazing!
4/19/13 This film does pick on the Germans (again), but it is a very good story. It is a tough life they are forced to live under the occupation. This story definitely makes me appreciate that I live in today's world and not back then. In war, everyone was constantly putting their lives on the line, even the civilians, like in this film.
