The Wiz Reviews
film yang sangat sangat menarik dan penuh misteri
Though it does have a strong cast, it's background/shooting and plot just felt off-putting. Though I won't be watching this film on repeat.
This update to the Wizard of Oz doesn’t quite have the magic of the original but does have some Motown cool lacking in the first one.
It was boring & made no sense
Amazing movie worth the time and meaning to every song and scene! Great actors and actresses. It’s a Learning movie don’t compare it to anything else.
I finally got around to watching *The Wiz*, and I have to say, it didn’t live up to my sky-high expectations. The cast is stacked and super talented, and I loved how African-American music and culture were woven into the classic *Wizard of Oz* story. The performances were solid, and "A Brand New Day" was a standout moment, but honestly, nothing else really stuck with me. It just doesn’t hold a candle to the 1939 film. The biggest issue? The pacing. It drags so much that the long runtime felt exhausting. I did like how Oz was basically a magical version of New York City, but the Wicked Witch was a huge letdown—at least make her look scarier, like in the original! Overall, *The Wiz* had all the ingredients to be great, but it just didn’t click. Decent, but a disappointment. 2.5 stars.
Syrupy thick with power ballads, The Wiz is visually stunning at times with an apt cast and an overall hummable score. Unfortunately, it's weighed down by a lumbering pace and a tired, earnest message that had me yelling "we get it already" before Dorothy stumbled her erratic way out of Munchkinland. A heavier hand in the editing room might have saved it. We'll never know.
An amazing take on the Wizard of Oz and a great lineup of music stars made this a must see and must own on bluray. The songs and choreography were spectacular, everything was so well done, especially considering the era when this came out. If you haven't seen it yet, make sure you do... it is simply amazing.
I got a soft spot for it. It's very entertaining and half decently made overall. But it has one of the most gonzo like pacings I have ever seen. This goes a freakin dime from nothign special to Evil Dead II type insanity (no gore) back to something cool and fun, to dragging and being boring, to sometimes I don't even know. It's a fever dream sometimes. Like someone said hey let's take The Wizard of Oz and mix it with the Rocky Horror Picture Show and see what happens just because it's New Hollywood and we can do whatever in this time. The set designs are kind of cool and it's defintely not in the slightest trying to copy the 1939 one. It's 100% it's own thing for better or worse. This just needed to shave off 30 minutes because it has no reason to be over 2 hours and you can feel it during some of the musical numbers that don't involve the main characters. It drags BAD during some of those. But there are some numbers that are freakin Ear Worms and others I don't even know or are forgettable. Diana Ross and the basic camerawork here are among the weakest things. She's just ok and despite having some good numbers in the end, she just straight disappears quite often because she is forgotten about because of all the crazy Super Mario Bro's / Highlander II type nonsense moments. This will straight just fly off the rails at points to only turn on a dime and become super catchy and have you wanting to dance and sing. Never seen anything so Yo-Yo like in my life. It's fun honestly but it needed some trimming and a better lead with more prescene more than anything. If your a fan of any actors in this or a entertaining but not necessarily good take on the Wizard of Oz, look no further my friend. Ease On Down The Road!!!
Why didn't anyone warn me this is a horror film?! There is some seriously spooky imagery in this film, like creepy figures emerging from graffiti being one. Michael Jackson and Diana Ross are heartwarming to watch in their young innocence. The movie is worth watching just to see them. Diana Ross has just the best powerhouse meltdown belting session at the end of the movie. She was unbelievable, rest her soul. Watch this movie if you love historical classics, afrocentric cinema and/or musicals in general.
Its one of the strangest musicals ever made. I won't make a case for it being actually great but its hard to really dislike something that people put so much effort into. The urban dreamscape style does make the movie watchable along with a number of supporting performances.
First watched it as a 7 year old and it still holds up. Think this reimagining of the story resonated more because of the big city backdrop and it still holds up. A fantastic film that's visually and musically stunning. Not usually keen on musicals but the music in this left me wanting more. Rewatching it as an adult with my child has been one of the highlights of this year!
I don't know what people aren't seeing. The Wiz is a work of art, visually captivating, yes the story kind of drags on but I don't trust anyone who tells me the music in this movie isn't phenomenal. I've been watching this since I was little and it moves me to this day. It will forever and always be a masterpiece. I don't care what anyone says.
What the hell? Fair play to Michael Jackson for keeping up the energy levels. But this is an extraordinarily bad film. It gets 1/10 because it made me laugh out loud on a number of occasions. (Unintentionally). Utter dross.
Greatest of all Time!
Very good movie.would have liked to see Stephanie Mills as the lead. She originally sang the song on Broadway. She is the one who is known for singing the song "Home." They had the original Lion from the Broadway show which was a bow to the Broadway show. This is why I can only give 4.5 stars.
The artwork is unstoppable, and the dance is unbelievable. Having grown up in NYC, there is no better fantasy movie. There are some weird moments, but as a whole this is a masterpiece.
"The Wiz" is a landmark film within the African-American community, offering a fresh take on the classic tale of "The Wizard of Oz." This adaptation reimagines the beloved characters through the lens of African-American culture, with Diana Ross stepping into the role of Dorothy and Michael Jackson portraying the Scarecrow. The catchy tune "Eez on down the road" replaced "Follow the Yellow Brick Road," adding a unique flavor to the narrative. While some elements of the film, like the witch meeting her end in a rather unconventional way, might seem over-the-top, it quickly becomes clear that this isn't a parody of the original story. Instead, it's a vibrant reinterpretation that celebrates the culture and artistry of its cast. This film has undoubtedly left a lasting impact on both the African-American community and cinema as a whole. It is recognized as a cinematic masterpiece, with audiences recalling the distinct portrayals of its characters and the powerful story woven throughout. Although it may not surpass the original film, "The Wiz" holds its own place in the cinematic legacy. I appreciate the effort put into the film, from its casting to its narrative. While I found the toilet scene involving the witch to be a peculiar choice—one that left me perplexed as a child—it remains a memorable moment. Despite its low-budget vibes, given the star-studded cast, the film effectively conveys its story for its time. It’s definitely worth watching, allowing viewers to embrace all interpretations of "The Wizard of Oz" and enjoy the unique spin that "The Wiz" brings to the classic tale.
