Wolf Man Reviews
A modernized take on a classic story. Good atmosphere, scares, and an emotional core keeping you tethered to the characters. While pretty by-the-numbers narratively, the thrilling pace and score make for a solid film

Whannell's approach wants to recall the dying humanity in the werewolf character that dates all the way back to Lon Chaney, Jr., but the marrying of ancient fears with modern tech that made Invisible Man so intriguing is completely missing here.
| Original Score: 2.5/5 | Apr 5, 2025
As he did with his excellent Universal monster movie reboot The Invisible Man, writer-director Leigh Whannell reinvents the werewolf motif in this spooky, streamlined, emotional chiller.

Puny in most regards.

While Wolf Man might hit the concept a little on the nose, brilliant visual designs, gross body horror, and above-average performances help keep Whannell’s film engaging.

While WOLF MAN doesn’t dive quite as deep into its themes as THE INVISIBLE MAN did, there’s still an interesting connection to generational abuse and trauma within the story. But it’s truly the look and feel here that made it so very entertaining to me.

Whannell gets back to basics while also subtly tweaking lycanthropy lore in his reboot of The Wolf Man, mixing attachment theory and metaphors in a parable about the sometimes unavoidable fate of becoming the thing you hate.
| Original Score: 3/5 | Mar 20, 2025
Co-writer and Director Leigh Whannell knows how to build suspense, as was evident with 2017's The Invisible Man.

... not in a way that satisfies as it tries to point at things overtly rather than giving the audience credit to understand the weight of things. In that same vein, it also underbakes its ideas by rushing ...
| Original Score: 2/5 | Mar 18, 2025
Wolf Man is a rather lazy attempt to bring back the classic monster icon, lacking the necessary character & plot development to make the audience care about this horrific situation or the people involved.
| Original Score: 2.5/5 | Mar 17, 2025
A disappointing and surprisingly straight forward remake from the director of Upgrade and The Invisible Man (2020). While it has it's moments, it lacks the sharp, well crafted script of the director's previous two films.
| Original Score: C+ | Mar 13, 2025
From the action to the creature effects, Wolf Man is an underwhelming take on the mythos, lacking any sense of savagery or scares.
| Original Score: 2/5 | Mar 5, 2025
I admire Whannell’s attempts to once again do something fresh with a horror legend but beyond the modern setting and creative directorial choices, he doesn’t have very much to add to what we’ve seen before.

It is condemned to that limbo where all those movies that we watch, enjoy, and almost immediately forget go due to their rushed and almost anecdotal narrative.

There's some creative ideas here to modernize the classic, but sadly WOLF MAN is a disappointing addition to the Universal Monster Universe. The UMU, if you will.

An okay horror film but by no means as good as what we have had from Leigh Whannell previously. While suspense is maintained it never overcomes the obstacle of trying to make us feel for an unlikable character.
| Original Score: 3/5 | Feb 18, 2025
... atmosphere and soundscape were on-point... seems to hint at more than comes to fruition... but it’s frustratingly nowhere to be found, and that undermines the entire production.
| Original Score: 2/4 | Feb 17, 2025
I found it utterly forgettable and a waste of fantastic actors.

Unfortunately, Wolf Man is quintessential January horror, despite the promise of the names and pasts attached to it.

Wolf Man ultimately delivers more than it doesn’t.
