Woman in Gold Reviews
Frankly, this is all too easy and too simple for Helen Mirren and company. Despite attempts at provoking family and ancestral themes, the drama is rarely substantial enough to stir the audience.

While Reynolds is as dependable as ever as Maria's right hand man, it's Mirren who, as ever, steals the show.

Helen Mirren is magnificent at the persistent and persuasive woman who refused to give up on justice. A must see.

The history touched upon in Woman in Gold is laden with such rich and fraught complexities. It is a pity the film does as little as it does to present or convey them.

Woman in Gold is just but one story in the ongoing battle for the return of stolen artwork during the Holocaust.
| Original Score: 4/5 | Aug 12, 2019
Woman in Gold's balancing-act between sweet and saccharine is a fight to the end, with Mirren ensuring the former, and the film is (only just) the victor.

I feel terrible about what happened to Altmann and her family but this movie isn't the tribute they deserved.

A merely adequate tale of identity and family and the American Dream. It's a sad Hollywood tradition to take amazing, bizarre true stories, sterilize them, prune them, buff them, and smoosh them into a uniform, textureless box.

May not quite reach gold level cinematic status, but it's a firm silver medal finisher, thanks to the cast and the very intriguing story.

If there's a weak link, it is the script, which drifts toward tedious at times--something hard to imagine with this story. In the end, the performances and the subject create an inspirational film.

A courtroom drama proves to be a stately change of pace for Reynolds.

...it doesn't take any risks and it doesn't try to surprise its audience, which makes it feel more like a (well-made) 온라인카지노추천 production than a theatrical movie. [Full review in Spanish]

The film comes and goes with flashbacks to show the horror of the occupation... [Full review in Spanish]

[Helen] Mirren is flawless, in turns feisty and dignified, and she elevates mediocre, paint-by-numbers biopic material into something moderately engaging.

Sad to say that may be the script's greatest problem: the real story involves a lot of legal wrangling that isn't terribly cinematic.

[Simon Curtis] must really thank the great Dame Helen [Mirren] for keeping this drama afloat.

Woman in Gold is a David-and-Goliath story.

Mirren makes us believe this is a fresh, just-discovered Third Reich atrocity. She's that present, that charismatic, that vulnerable.

Mirren and Reynolds play off each other nicely.

With Gold, Curtis does justice to a fascinating story with far-reaching political and cultural implications. He helms with a sensitive hand, while maintaining a healthy pace.
