Wounds Reviews
I really ought to be giving this one star, but the insanity of what’s on screen is so strangely fascinating that I somewhat recommend it in an ironic way.

It's not precisely terrible -- these are all talented people involved. It's just one or two degrees off from working, but those one or two degrees, with a project this high-wire, defeats it.

It builds to this really absurd ending, which is really fascinating, but I don't think it pays off the way it thinks it does.

Horror films usually put all the cards out to play in the set-up... but mostly it feels like the film never moves out of its set-up stage.
| Original Score: 5/10 | Oct 20, 2020
Wounds is a boring, misdirected story with a convoluted narrative that can't find its footing as a tech or psychological thriller.

Maybe it's one of those movies where you have to go back and see if there's something you've missed the first time around. But the initial verdict is that it's not eerie and packs little thrills.

Honestly, you could search for answers within this film, but you won't find it - the plot is the equivalent of a Where's Wally joke.

I'm afraid there is nothing risky in 'Wounds', the second film by British-Iranian director Babak Anvari. [Full review in Spanish]
| Original Score: 5/10 | Aug 2, 2020
Wounds is a film that seems simple up top and gets more and more upsetting as it unspools. With a stellar cast and a story that gets under your skin, Wounds is a dizzying and disorienting spin into paranoid horror.

Drinking, drugs, violence in uneven horror mystery.
| Original Score: 2/5 | Feb 28, 2020
The plot is convoluted and never decides what the story is really about, which just makes you feel excluded from the story.
| Original Score: 2/5 | Jan 29, 2020
This would-be slow-burn horror oversimplifies its dynamics instead, wastes its cast, and stretches its beats to the point where there are no real highs or lows.
| Jan 17, 2020
It all leads to one of the most disturbing, icky final sequences of the year, a tour de force of entomological terror that leaves enough unsaid to later linger in the subconscious.

A pastiche of Cronenberg, Lynch, and Japanese horror that never reaches the height of its promise. In this case, the whole is less than its parts. [Full Review in Spanish]

It's a work of sticky, unyielding dread - one of those misunderstood gems that comes along every so often, catching you off-guard with its skin-crawling concept and arcane atmosphere.

Within confines of its gimmicky setup, Anvari delivers an intimate, multi-layered story about an unmoored soul who first recoils from and is then devoured by an ineffable evil.
| Original Score: B- | Oct 31, 2019
It is, perhaps, too easy to say that 'Wounds' intentionally leaves itself open to interpretation. Instead, it raises thoughtful questions that are not easily answered.
| Original Score: 3.5/5 | Oct 31, 2019
Overall, Wounds is a gruesome, feverish, cockroach-infested, alcoholic nightmare...but low-key in an enjoyable way. Call me crazy.
| Oct 28, 2019
Anvari doesn't create many highlights with the movie, which only tends to connect when acting reverential to Cronenberg, trying body horror on for size.
| Original Score: C | Oct 24, 2019
Wounds is plagued by the vast emptiness that motivates its leading man.
