Dumb unrealistic characters. lol I mean wtf I’ve seen better films from high school kids then this POS lol
All in all, it was an entertaining watch. I found the stop motion between the shorts just as interesting. The 1st really left me hanging, the second was entertaining but had me scratching my head over the main's motivations. It was comical more than scary. The 3rd was by far most creepy and the final, well acted, left me wanting more. It would make a great movie.
This movie is drastically underrated. A movie that consists of multiple mini stories, each manages to capture the different types of horror. If you do watch it, be sure to give a real chance & watch the whole thing.
Horrendously terrible even for low budget standards.
This movie is just flat out horrendous. The Characters did beyond stupid and implausible decisions. The first thing a woman does when she finds her dead husband is hide him and then put him in a Panda Costume in front of her kid's birthday, only for them to discover that he's dead and cause a panic…what in the world was that? It has lazy and cheap jump scares, and the dialogue is god awful, along with the writing. The doctor says you got to eat Danny. He says why. Doctor says because people are starving all over the world. The heck? How about because if you don't eat you'll die for gods sakes! Terrible movie, one of the worsts I've seen.
This was truly awful. None of the stories had plots that made very much sense. The characters acted in implausible ways. I didn't even bother watching the last, just read the Wikipedia article to see about it. I had to look there to get what happened at one scene. Turned out it was a dream but this was not at all clear watching it. This is the sort of movie bad enough to walk out on if it was an in flight movie.
Production values were great, movie not so much. Basically. meh. I realize it was all about female empowerment, but by the end, I was thinking maybe they needed an injection of Y.
I'd like to start out with the fact that using an anthology format to tie as many female directors to a film is a respectable idea, but it's impossible for this film to make any case for more female directors getting the chance to work in horror when the 4 tales that it presents are so uninspired and uneventful that there may as well have been no film to begin with. 3/4 segments presented in this dud of an anthology are utterly pointless with hardly anything passable as horror, or even a comllete thought, as they often finish before they've explained a single point they bring to the table. One utilizes a simple set up to craft a presentable monster story, but doesn't go for anything original. This anthology is not a mixed bag, it's not an uneven mash of horror movie ideas, it's just mediocre and incomplete at best, and absolutely boring and atrocious at worst. Once again, highlighting female film making talent is a cause worth supporting on every level, but this film gives nothing to defend, and so not only is it not recommendable, it should be avoided at any cost.
A very poor movie. All 4 stories were poor with no twist endings, a weak wrap around element and no real scares. The first 5 minutes of the first story was the only part of the film that showed any promise and even this came to nothing . Watch the Amicus anthology films of the 1970s to see how it should be done.
I can imagine the four women who directed this movie meeting in the room talking about the four anthology short films that they will be putting into one feature. One of them Obviously doesn't like horror and smashed in a comedy/horror into the second. When the comedy isn't even funny and the cinematography on all of the anthology shorts is the worst! The only thing funny is how bad it is, but it does not fit in the category as it is so bad its good.
In short this movie is an awful attempt at horror. I enjoyed the premise of female directors as that is what Hollywood is definitely lacking, but what's the point of doing that when you're going to make an anthology movie that is this shallow. This movie definitely could've used some more common sense and balance in the overall arc of the film.
A bit of a rushed review here but part of the reason is because I found the movie forgettable: XX should be given credit for trying to give female directors their time to shine and while there is a cool stop-motion framing device and one decent segment (I never really bothered to remember the names of the segments), this anthology horror film suffers from all the typical anthology problems: trying to develop characters and have scary sequences within the limitations of 20 minutes, uneven acting and of course that one segment that stands out for all the wrong reasons: namely, one that's treated like it's scary but is more of a black comedy. It doesn't help that the director of this segment claims that this actually was intended to be a black comedy. Especially given that the segment's premise requires the characters to behave like idiots. I don't care about the other two segments, they're just not as good as the directors wanted them to be. Considering how there are far darker horror anthology films out there, I'm not sure XX is going to be in most horror fans' Top 10 lists.
Very bad. Zero out of four.
Stories were pretty good, but some were lacking more than others. Goes more for the creep factor than jump scares.
It's necessary to shake things up a bit when material starts to become too trite and horror really does need its Renaissance. I was hoping this anthology would be a welcome addition to the world of horror and provide a fresh perspective. But it falls flat, with two of its segments feeling like they're not even horror and one that should have been a bad SyFy flick. The intermission fluff segments were oddly irritating because they were filmed via stop motion. These were intended to be macabre but came off as uninteresting and nonsensical. It's unfortunate that this was a showcase of female horror directors because it undermines other aspiring female directors in the future. So, is it worth watching? My recommendation: watch the 4th segment then find something better to watch for the night. For a more detailed breakdown of this movie and more, visit TheCynicist.com
