Year of the Fish Reviews

An interesting take on the tale of Cinderella. The premise is good and I quite enjoyed Nguyen in the lead role. The acting from most of the supporting actors ranges. What really took me out of it was the rotoscoping which I've never been a fan of. Still, the premise is nice enough for a viewing.

It's a little weird, but it's also a beautiful love story!

It's exactly Cinderella in modern Chinatown. While the visuals are interesting at first, it gradually becomes more annoying than charming. In the end, the movie is a bit to dark for children but too shallowly simplistic for adults.

A simple story of a women.....

There's a lot to like about this movie. Unlike others, I don't object to the use of rotoscope here. I definitely preferred Waking Life, but not because I felt the animation was out of place here. This movie is visually appealing. The animation advances the story's fairytale quality. The soundtrack was often overbearing and there was rampant stereotyping. Still, the movie had its charm.

Year of the fish - Is finally getting its US release. Taxicabs may not turn into a pumpkins, and the fairy godmother may sport fins and a tail, but "Year of the Fish" is a Cinderella story all the way, from its abused heroine to its happy ending. That the film is rotoscoped, or digitally painted, is its arthouse/festival calling card. But the story is so cliched and broadly drawn that few paying auds will feel compelled to call. That the film is animated gives it an appropriately magical feel, but it can't save the story from being drowned in devices and stereotype. Chin, although a terrific actress, is bound by the dragon-lady conventions of her character; Nguyen's Ye Xian is little more than a doe-eyed victim, waiting for Prince Charming -- who comes in the form of the handsome Johnny Pan (Ken Leung), a local accordionist who's been having problems with modern Chinese women, but who will apparently live happily ever with someone as pliable as Ye Xian. Cinderella story to the rescue. This is a must see. It should be on screen by September. Vince Vmedia UCB

Absolutely painful. The rotoscoping was an ugly gimmick. And the story was a horribly cheesy and stereotypical outsider interpretation of a Chinatown fairytale.

This movie's strength is not its story, nor the acting, but the visual beauty of the technique called rotoscoping. It was a perfect film festival/Sunday night choice: a happy story that I will not remember that I've seen in one year's time.

i heart rotoscope. it makes movie makeup obsolete. enjoyed the brief commentary on chinese human trafficking, sweatshop work...run by who else, but the chinese?

Jul 18, 2007

the rotoscoping almost comes off as a gimmick to disguise the films flaws and inconsistencies. leaves you with a good feeling at the end of the movie until you actually think about what was happening.

An excellent modern take of Cinderella. Tsai Chin is wonderful and ken Leung excellent as always. But overall it is a real downer. She goes thru hell thru most of the film, and it can be very gut wrenching at times. Hard to sit thru...

The chinese version of Cinderella but modern and amazing with stunning visuals and characters that are just...wow

Craziest indie film ever...Rotoscoping was insane story was sad.

Very charming. Homebrew rotoscoping was used both to disguise the lack of budget but also to enhance the magical realist feel of the whole thing. Featuring Randall Duk Kim in about three different roles.

Year of the Fish is the chineese version of the story Cinderella. I really enjoyed this movie. The story was different, but also familiar. The animation was also very well done. A great movie.
