You People Reviews

Wastes a talented cast on unbelievable characters that are always trying to score political points. A real missed opportunity

| Feb 28, 2024

Any yet, there's just something unbearably sanctimonious about this film; a sense of self-righteousness about its racial attitudes that is tone-deaf at best and genuinely, alarmingly hypocritical, at worst.

| Original Score: 0/10 | Aug 16, 2023

"You People" has a lot going for it and is one of the funnier movies that Netflix has in its current catalog of new content. It also feels genuine, with the Los Angeles background making for a different take on a city mostly stereotyped for glitz.

I enjoyed, I Laughed, but i have completely forgotten about the film... many elements should have been dived into deeper

In Barris’ hands, it’s just…nothing — for two tedious, aggressively unfunny hours.

| Jul 20, 2023

Eddie Murphy, Jonah Hill and Julia Louis-Dreyfus occasionally find the level of humor between them that this film wants to observe, but it too often drenches itself in behavior untoward to everyday people that it loses whatever edge it thinks it has.

| Original Score: 2/4 | Jun 28, 2023

'You People' awkwardly (and often offensively) alternates between its rom-com set-up and decidedly un-funny observations on racism.

| Original Score: 3/10 | Mar 15, 2023

You People was a disappointment. A comedy that could've been an edgy, incisive & intelligent take on interracial relationships defaults to being too broad with low hanging fruit jokes, caricatures instead of characters and no chemistry between the leads.

| Original Score: 2.5/5 | Feb 22, 2023

Spends more time proving its points than making us laugh.

| Original Score: 5/10 | Feb 19, 2023

It's so funny. I don't know if it'll change race relations, but it'll make you laugh.

| Feb 10, 2023

I haven't laughed this hard in years... This is Kenya Barris at his cutting best.

| Feb 10, 2023

It’s a sharp satire of a worthy topic that hits at plenty of truths. But considering the level of talent involved, it probably should have been funnier than it is.

| Original Score: 2.5/5 | Feb 10, 2023

Clumsy and cliché-ridden.

| Original Score: 2/5 | Feb 9, 2023

Tries to say a lot and do a lot, from race relations and interracial relationships to interfaith relationships, and unfortunately it doesn’t quite hit the mark.

| Feb 9, 2023

You People consistently props up noble intentions. It’s just a shame the film never defines a humorous or meaningful experience from its potent concept.

As Julia Louis-Dreyfus proved in Seinfeld and then in the caustic series Veep, she is the queen of this kind of comedy, cringe awkwardness. She makes the discomfort enjoyable.

| Original Score: 3/5 | Feb 8, 2023

…a passably enjoyable light watch, name-checking hot-button topics like police brutality as part of a genial ‘celebrating our differences’ comedy…

| Original Score: 3/5 | Feb 7, 2023

Jonah Hill and Kenya Barris have found a way to navigate a large swath of America’s racial and cultural minefield in a manner that will make you laugh hard, but also stop and think about stuff. And that’s good stuff.

| Original Score: 3/5 | Feb 5, 2023

While the script has no problem filling the air with irreverent humor and absurd characters, (Kenya Barris) is unafraid to abandon a sharp and distinct point of view.

| Original Score: B | Feb 5, 2023

Although the third act falls back on some cliches of the genre, it had me laughing or at least smiling from start to finish, and that's the least I ask of a comedy. [Full review in Spanish]
