Young Sherlock Holmes Reviews
Though mostly remembered for its landmark achievement of CGI, it is a very underrated mystery thriller with some dazzling practical effects.
Honestly, I was 5 when this movie first came out. It will be one of my all time favorite movies. The action, the history, the well Sherlock being Sherlock, but it was a great movie then and it is a movie that when I want a bit of the nostalgia I will watch and at times, I still can see 5 year old me sitting on the follow transfixed to the screen. Especially, any scene in the Pyramid...
One of the real gems of '85. Wonderful performances, groundbreaking special effects, and a fantastic musical score by composer Bruce Broughton. A tribute worthy of the singular Sherlock Holmes.
I absolutely love this movie! Innocent and exciting and pure entertainment for the entire family from young to old. Imaginative, lighthearted and spellbinding. Fabulous depiction of Victorian England.
Just an unbelievable work of Choice & Elimination.
An oddity with a ridiculous resolution.
The greatest 01 hour: and 49 minutes ever!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
One of my favorite Spielberg produced films growing up in the 80's. It's a shame it didn't do as well as it deserved. Some critics complained the Spielberg magic/special effects were out of place in such a setting. I disagree. It fit well into this mystery and made this Holmes movie different than what you'd expect. Instead of fighting someone like moriarty , Holmes is against the kind of villains Indiana Jones or the Goonies would fight. Like a fish out of water vibe to it and who wouldn't be curious to see that. Great casting, particularly with Nicholas Rowe and Alan Cox as Holmes and Watson. Beautiful locations and special effects and great action sequences. One of my favorite 80's action films.
The first name on the credits roll is Steven Spielberg, so you know what the movie will be like, part ET, part Indiana Jones, more cutesy than bloody.
This script and the production are a disgrace to the legacy of Conan Doyle. Worst Sherlock Holmes ever. Typical Stephen Spielberg schlock.
Another lost flixster rating!!! Ugh. It was good for me as a kid, but it hasn't aged as well. It was an STG DVD.
I must admit the movie is interesting, Sherlock Holmes is a fascinating character since the beginning and Nicholas Rowe did an amazing job as the famous detective. But on the other side, despite it's interesting, the film is, at the same time, boring, because the rhythm is a little slow. Furthermore, Alan Cox makes a finicky and almost intolerable John Watson. It was hard to watch having him as the protagonist. Honestly, I think the story would flow better if Sherlock was the main character. The enigma is pretty cool, with intelligent clues, and despite everything, invites you to decipher it.
I was a bit disappointed as a big Holmes fan. Story overall: 3 of 5. I think adding the girl Elizabeth was annoying, not the girl herself, but her part in the story as a kind of love interest for Holmes, which I don't like, yes there was one woman for him, but only o n e. I know it's not written by Doyle, but still it annoyed me. The actor of Watson did a great job. Great effects. Plot twists were good, but a bit foreseeable as an adult. It probably makes a great kids movie, if your kids enjoy a bit mystery.
Chris Columbus, Barry Levinson, and Steven Speilberg collaborate for one of their early childlike stories of the 80s This one focuses on a younger Sherlock Holmes. He meets James Watson for the very first time as a violinist. Watson is transferred from a new boys boarding school. Holmes is also in love with a girl named Elizabeth Hardy and her uncle is a retired professor who lives upstairs crafting all kinds of inventions. Someone's been tranquilizing people with a hallucination toxin and making them take their own lives. It may even be tied to an ancient Egyptian cult practicing ritual sacrifices. The classic detective uses his cunning intellect, clever deduction skills, and sleuthing tactics he's most well known for. He and Watson are up to solve the mystery despite being just younger men. I could definitely feel the Spielberg whimsicalness along the likes of Gremlins, Goonies, and Indiana Jones. Plus this was the pre-Harry Potter of sorts by Columbus which gave his knack for wonderment, the impact of education, and the practical creature effects during these hallucination scenes. A fun detective story for youngsters diving into the most famous detectives' origin. Okay so it's a bit trippy and made for the tween crowd but you gotta admire the classic adventure vibe. Holmes, Watson, and Elizabeth make quite the fun trio on this little caper. We see a version of Sherlock Holmes told to keep his emotions out of the equation but it sets him up for loneliness the rest of his life. True he'll have many adventures ahead but he'll have to try to keep his humanity in tact. The special effects are pretty state of the art, particularly the stained glass knight sequence. The music is joyful. The time period is pretty spot-on. Not bad for Sherlock Holmes first adventure as a young upcoming detective. It's a shame though this never had any future stories but it's nice to look back on what could've been.
This is an awesome movie. I saw this when I was younger and still enjoy it to this day. The actors were really excellent in their roles. Holmes, Watson, and had an intriguing case. Though many seem at odds with the whole layout, I think it works out quite well. Really, I wished it had done well and we probably would've gotten a sequel or a continuance of films. Even though it's not based on anything remotely related to Conan Doyle's work, I think it's spot on to actually be worthwhile in the whole era of written work. Excellent soundtrack. Great film!
This movie is hit-and-miss; cool horror effects, fun young adult characters, poor casting of Holmes, a less-than compelling mystery. Regardless, by the end my mind could only focus on ONE thing: the romantic female interest's name is Elizabeth. If she would've married Sherlock, her name would've become Elizabeth Holmes, obviously turning her into the corrupt inventor of Theranos. However (SPOILER ALERT) she dies. Sooooo…maybe the villain is the hero?
a good investigative film that tells the story of a skilled and intelligent young Holmes. In the film there is a great halo of fear and mystery that envelops the film all the time
