Your Sister's Sister Reviews

Mar 22, 2025

This was brilliant... Mark Duplass is criminally underrated as an actor... & he, Dewitt & Emily Blunt's characters were all so damaged & endearing, it simply drew you in.

I enjoyed this low key movie. Mark Duplass was excellent. The scenery was beautiful too.

This was such an enjoyable movie with a great storyline and acting. The three main characters were excellent together. I gave 3 stars because of the lame non-ending. I hate it when they leave you hanging. I would have given 4-4.5 stars if the ending was resolved.

So inept and unpleasant the cast doesn't matter.

Thoroughly engaging and entertaining indie - just three great actors with palpable chemistry, unique atmospheric location, and a solid script. Funny and moving - just what this kind of movies are supposed to be!

This movie has a phenomenal one sentence pitch: A man grieving the loss of his brother is told by his best friend/ex of his deceased brother to take a trip to her family cabin, where he meets her older lesbian sister, sleeps with her, and realizes he and his best friend are actually in love. Watching this movie, I felt that not much was happening, and if you can summarize up most of the plot in one sentence, I guess not much did. But having some experience with a mumblecore movies and Mark Duplass as an actor, I had expected there to be fewer 180s in character development and plot moves. As the plot progresses, you start to empathize with each person in really surprising ways because you learn more about them. You figure the characters out in real time just how you do in real life. Lynn Shelton has such a grasp on human relationships, and you can tell from the authentic ways Duplass and Blunt deliver their lines. They are so spot on. They say everything you want them to say to each other in the most cathartic way possible. When Mark speaks to Blunt in the cabin after she finds out about her sister, he cuts straight through this tight little knot of conflict and speaks to the heart of the matter. "I slept with your sister, and you slept with my brother, and I cannot be with you". You never consider the fact that she used to date his brother, because they are so close to begin with. It's amazing. Besides that, I've never really sought out sister movies, so I can't speak to this movie in the greater cannon of sister movies, but Blunt's adult relationship with her older sister is something I haven't seen before, and adored. Maybe their quiet moments together, whispering half-asleep under the covers, talking about love are unrealistic. I can't know. But I'm going to look out for sister movies in the future.

Love Emily Blunt and Mark Duplass and their entire bodies of work. Love the director and the direction and the aesthetic. Therefore it is with deep regret that I cannot recommend this film. The plot is maddening, condoning and rewarding behavior that is so vile and vicious and cruel, that it's hard to reconcile with these wonderful characters and otherwise funny and sweet movie. There is no deep message to ponder, it's simply left to the viewer to peaceably accept dehumanizing and antisocial behavior with a smile and a high five. I guess if you're the type of person who can sympathize with pedophiles or domestic abusers or soul-sucking vampiric relatives, then you're a better person than I and you'll enjoy the plot, the characters, and this movie.

Good acting and drama.

'Your Sister's Sister' makes for decent viewing. Emily Blunt, Rosemarie DeWitt and Mark Duplass bounce off each other nicely, showing good chemistry to avoid awkwardness. I liked the twist and ending. This film isn't anything special, perhaps a little overrated by the critics, but it is 90mins well spent.

Enjoyable film, but one problem. The screenplay apparently was never timed out, and when production wrapped, it must have then been discovered that nearly all of the plot twists and conflicts were resolved with 30 minutes left on the clock. What is left for the lead characters to do? Ride a bike on empty two-lane roads or congratulate each other for their ability to be open and honest. This is a great 60-minute movie that went on 30 minutes too long. Watchable and enjoyable, but once the conflicts are resolved, you can hit the fast-forward button.

I really liked this emotionally packed, realistic little, uneventful movie with a cute 3 people cast. I did feel every part of it and made perfect sense. Emily Blunt is a true gem.

Strengths: It feels like all movies involving Mark Duplass (Jack) are filled with quality dialogue. That was the case here again, as the entire movie has sharp conversation that switches from witty and comical, to deep and emotional at the drop of a hat. That's made even more impressive when you consider that most of the dialogue was improvised. Emily Blunt (Iris) and Rosemarie DeWitt (Hannah) were both great as the females in the film. They both shared strong chemistry with Duplass that shined throughout. The big scene where everything comes out, from Jack and Hannah sleeping together to Hannah poking holes in the condom to Iris' feelings towards Jack, is fantastic. Weaknesses: Usually, these indie films are rife with charm, but there's not a lot to this one. Though it's considered a romantic comedy, there's not a lot of romance in it. Other than a few conversations, the Iris/Jack love story isn't fully developed. We just get the sense that they are simply friends until Iris flat out admits it to her sister. I wasn't a big fan of the ending. It wraps things up a bit too nicely considering everything that happened. Plus, the cliffhanger vibe didn't quite work for me. Overall: A good movie with some strong dialogue and acting from the three leads. It can be a bit dull at points and the ending leaves something to be desired, but it's an easy watch that you probably won't regret.

whoever has the sun.. Your Sister's Sister Its key lies within the process of bonding that occurs so smoothly that one almost forgets that all of it is an act. Lynn Shelton has done a brilliant job on writing this screenplay and bring it alive on screen, which is not easy to execute especially such an eerie situation that is created among characters where he literally plays with them like a puppet. The performance objective is what itches in the throat in here for no matter how much Emily Blunt must invest on it, she is just a supporting actor the rest of it actually lies upon Mark Duplass and Rosemarie DeWitt; the lead characters, who could have done better. Your Sister's Sister may have a similar tone to "dysfunctional family" genre but it certainly is more than that especially in its high pitched dramatic sequences in its last act where all the sub-plots merges in.

My cousin was conceived after a bottle of hard liquor 30 yeard ago. He has a list of disabilities due to his parents' intoxication back in the day. Making babies with boose is a shortcut to a lifelong suffering, including multiple lives. I hope that NOBODY uses the plot from this movie as a recipe for their lives, yet this movie does not have even a slight whiff of "Do NOT try this at home". Should we have more movies like this, teaching our young "ho to"? Please keep drinking and making babies apart!

This is an okay movie. Emily Blunt doesn't do a good job of hiding her British Accent. Decent story with an interesting twist.

It's not good movie to watch

A trio of excellent performances helps sell this as a nuanced film instead of a derivative one.

A rather daft premise with an awful ending. It really is a flat movie with no charm or laughs. Its not memorable in the slightest and a total waste of your time.

On the strength of its three leads (The standout being Emily Blunt) "My Sister's Sister" overcomes its weaker elements to produce an honest drama with decent emotional heft.
