Karina Montgomery

Tomatometer-approved critic
Biography:

Karina was born and raised in Austin, Texas. She got a degree in English while being active in Theatre Collective and Capitol City Playhouse. She always liked movies but didn't really pay them any heed until she saw Liar Liar in March, 1997. Frustrated by the public's general antipathy for Jim Carrey as a performer, and delighted by how the vehicle suited his talents with total script motivation for every antic, she wrote a review and emailed it to some twenty-something friends, urging them to see the movie, even if they had hated Jim Carrey in the past. Several of them responded favorably, and she began sending a note every time she saw a movie, good or bad. "Could you also send your reviews to my friend?" turned into more subscribers and more responsibility to churn out meaningful text. When the Hollywood Stock Brokerage Resource (http://www.hsbr.org/) asked her to be the staff reviewer, she knew she really had to include some journalistic integrity. Basically, she loves it. She loves recommending films that might get missed and protecting her friends from wasting their precious time and money on cinematic drivel. As huge, big budget stinkers crossed her path, she grew frustrated with the box-office-led studio choices, as they favored safe, branded franchises that suck over well thought-out work. She also uses her reviews as a forum for evangelizing the animated features genre, one she feels is not taken seriously enough for the amount of quality work being done. She now resides in San Diego and continues her quest for a better cinematic world. Long time, dear supporters she would like to thank include (in no order) - J. Kevin Smith, Shannon Swenson, Matthew Kaplan, Eric Martin, Jon Montgomery, and Carolyn Bates.

Dr. Seuss' The Cat in the Hat (2003) 10% 0/5 “” – rec.arts.movies.reviews Jan 22, 2013 Full Review The Green Hornet (2011) 45% 2/5 “Seeing this movie in 3-D adds nothing to the experience. The most in-your-face thing about the movie is the crippling insecurity of all the main players, which rendered it painfully difficult to care about them. Waltz is delightful.” – rec.arts.movies.reviews Mar 18, 2011 Full Review No Strings Attached (2011) 47% 3/5 “All Adam and Emma are doing is pretending to not be emotionally vulnerable and living out our fantasies without suffering any of the consequences. I call BS.” – rec.arts.movies.reviews Mar 18, 2011 Full Review The Extra Man (2010) 41% 4/5 “Harrison's life is a quest only for pleasure, and Kline and Dano definitely provide it, even if their arc is short and shallow. See it for Kevin.” – rec.arts.movies.reviews Oct 1, 2010 Full Review I Do & I Don't (2007) 2/5 “Two couples awkwardly interact, and end up achieving nothing. The beginning tells us whether they successfully completed the task; the end of the movie tries to force the title to work.” – rec.arts.movies.reviews Oct 1, 2010 Full Review The Switch (2010) 53% 4/5 “I would describe this movie first as sweet, then as funny - though the funny is definitely present, either dry and sly, or big and farcical. It's definitely a movie worth checking out.” – rec.arts.movies.reviews Oct 1, 2010 Full Review Piranha (2010) 75% 4/5 “Neither gore enthusiasts nor boobie fans will be disappointed. Piranha 3D knows what it is and embraces it, from stupid disobedience to kids in peril to sexy exploitative silliness, with a remarkable level of humor and competence.” – rec.arts.movies.reviews Oct 1, 2010 Full Review The Social Network (2010) 96% 5/5 “Give it a shot. Unlike Facebook itself, The Social Network has no real flaws.” – rec.arts.movies.reviews Oct 1, 2010 Full Review The Kids Are All Right (2010) 93% 4/5 “Could easily have been of a straight, infertile marriage thrown off balance by their biological donor, but then we would have been deprived of the singular pleasure of getting to watch Bening and Moore play such a wonderful married couple.” – rec.arts.movies.reviews Aug 3, 2010 Full Review Dinner for Schmucks (2010) 42% 2.5/5 “Clearly took one funny movie about Tim's relationships and succumbed to the Hollywood pandergeist "we're making a movie with Dinner in the title, there is gonna be a damn dinner!" But Carell makes it very sweet.” – rec.arts.movies.reviews Aug 2, 2010 Full Review Despicable Me (2010) 80% 3/5 “Supervillains exploiting orphan girls is funny! At the inevitable melting of Gru's stony heart, the film turns into something else entirely. That which it turns into is sloppy and a little unsatisfying, but it is still irresistibly sweet, thanks to this” – Cinerina Jul 18, 2010 Full Review Inception (2010) 87% 4.5/5 “There are plenty of reasons to like Inception, whether you found it obvious or impenetrable. You'll wish you could dream as lucidly as this, but be grateful here you have Nolan as your tour guide.” – Cinerina Jul 16, 2010 Full Review Toy Story 3 (2010) 98% 5/5 “Both a paean and a monument to creativity and the love of things that bring us joy. Please reward the studio for giving us the best.” – Cinerina Jun 18, 2010 Full Review Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time (2010) 37% 3/5 “Lovely to look at and mildly funny but tries with sweaty desperation to be the next Pirates of the Caribbean.” – Cinerina Jun 11, 2010 Full Review Get Him to the Greek (2010) 72% 3.5/5 “A key indicator as to whether or not you will be at all interested in this movie is whether or not you liked Russell Brand playing this character in Forgetting Sarah Marshall. Otherwise it's close to great, with weird pacing.” – Cinerina Jun 4, 2010 Full Review How to Train Your Dragon (2010) 99% 4.5/5 “Knowledge is power in this film, and I always love a good pro-intellect story; even better, this is a pro-animal, pro-empathy story, as well. Deep love of Toothless the dragon as well.” – Cinerina Jun 4, 2010 Full Review Date Night (2010) 67% 2.5/5 “What should be hilarious only ends up sort of amusing. Is it bad to only be amused? Not as such, but considering how hard they are clearly working to overcome the execution...” – Cinerina Jun 4, 2010 Full Review Kick-Ass (2010) 78% 4.5/5 “I expected some comedy, some teen angst, some great stunts, and I got them, oh yes. I did not expect mob bosses, crazed double crosses, intense and squibbulous violence, a classic revenge plot, and a pretty decent little love story. If this is even close t” – Cinerina Apr 16, 2010 Full Review Hot Tub Time Machine (2010) 64% 3/5 “Sure, the premise hobbles our heroes a tad, but Hot Tub Time Machine is a cute and silly romp through dudesville worthy of an evening with friends and goodies.” – Cinerina Apr 14, 2010 Full Review The Secret of Kells (2009) 90% 5/5 “Both glorious to behold and a wonderful tale of the medieval struggle between Christianity and Celtic animism.” – Cinerina Apr 14, 2010 Full Review Repo Men (2010) 22% 2.5/5 “Sure, there are plenty of plot holes, but we didn't come to the movies for artiforg tort reform. We came for squibbulous close-quarters knife fights.” – Cinerina Mar 24, 2010 Full Review Diary of a Wimpy Kid (2010) 54% 4.5/5 “Sends all the right messages to the youth audience it targets and also keeps the grownups entertained with that forgotten, pre-ironic innocent comedy that fades as we each discover sex.” – Cinerina Mar 24, 2010 Full Review Green Zone (2010) 53% 4/5 “The pacing was strong, the casting was perfect, and the Message made for an interesting premise. Green Zone is probably not for everyone, but it is a solid piece of entertainment.” – Cinerina Mar 20, 2010 Full Review The Last Station (2009) 70% 4.5/5 “The Last Station is indeed well done, very moving, and informative, but it left me a little cold at the end. Perhaps I just felt frustrated at how little the world changes even when people with good ideas come along.” – Cinerina Mar 20, 2010 Full Review Youth in Revolt (2009) 66% 3/5 “When Francois Dillinger is on screen, the movie comes alive...the rest of the time it's that post-Napoleon Dynamite sort of plodding study of eccentricity.” – Cinerina Mar 20, 2010 Full Review
