Dick Tracy Reviews

Apr 11, 2025

From second number one, I was in love with this movie. It's comic-booky backgrounds and vibrant energy give it a flare that puts Warren Beatty in a great, great spotlight. It doesn't hurt to have Dustin Hoffman and Al Pacino in competition with you either. And, wouldn't you know it, Madonna adds her subtle, not subtle flare to this wonderful tale of deception and what it means to love.

The cinematography, direction, and music is all good and the best things about this. There are some gorgous paintings, atmosphere, color, and it truly feels like a comic book. The practical effects are all great here too. The soundtrack very much reminds me of Batman 89' which makes sense. Wish it as a bit more catchy on it's own though and better used at times. The worst part here that drags this down is the editing which is just ok. The Madonna plot line, Tracy bonding with Tess & The Kid, Big Boy and all the croonies involved with trying to bring him down just all feel seperate. this follows a pretty predictable pattern of cutting between Tracy's personal life and the actual Noir plot but they just feel completely seperate throughout most of the runtime and just gets a bit hard to follow. And honestly at points boring. When the visuals and soundtrack take a backseat to the story it just can't hold as well. Everything else isn't bad though. Beatty is good as Tracy, and Pacino is so over the top but not bad. It probably would've helped if he toned it down just a bit though. Madonna is just alright and her scenes of her singing and all just don't feel that important and kind of hammed in. The "Twist" makes sense but it's just kind of lame and farfetched. Everyone else varies from being half decent to alright which is crazy given the absolute all star cast for this. Beatty is easily the best though. Tess is a bit forgettable and The Kid is honestly annoying. Any scene with those two just kind of slow things down. You know the other thing is Tracy himself isn't that interesting a character and kind of boring. We don't really get much background on him besides the basics and this relies on the relationships to flesh him out. But Tess and the Kid just can't really do that. Than the actual plot is hard to follow because of how jumpy it is and the dialouge isn't bad but it's jsut not sharp enough to carry more visually boring scenes. This has stronger bells and whistles than the actual underlying substance. If I had to lay my finger on the biggest issue here is it needed to find a better way to make Tracy interesting and tie in Tess & the kid to the actual crime plot. Or honestly just get rid of the kid altogether. It is a love letter to Noirs and the source material though. If your a die hard of fan of any actor in this or the source material it may be worth giving this a watch though. It's not broken at all. This has lots of potential for a remake.

It’s not bad nor good though the makeup, costumes, and production design help this film give some slack

This movie stands out and was ahead of its time. It is a great, wacky, colorful, crime movie following a detective who resembles the Man with the Yellow Hat who is struggling with balancing his person life and his obligations to the city. If they had let Warren Beatty make his PG-13 director cut it would have been a complete masterpiece. Because the movie is only 105 minutes it seems rushed at times and important relationships seem underdeveloped. Despite this it is a visually stunning movie with some of the best character design in film. The acting is good and I think this is a very underrated movie.
*I do have a slight bias having grownup watching this movie a lot*

My favorite comic strip movie of all time.

The production design, costumes, prosthetics and in general the visuals of "Dick Tracy" are magnificent. Warren Beatty is very good, and the cast they've put together is impressive although some of them are barely recognizable under their makeup and perhaps a little underwhelming - I mean, getting Dustin Hoffman to do whatever the fuck he was doing ad infinitum isn't exactly the most brilliant casting choice. On the whole, it's a fairly interesting film even if the storyline is all too familiar.

Undoubtedly one of the GREATEST comic films of ALL-TIME! A pedigree of cast and crew that no Marvel or DC movie has yet to surpass; even to this day.

An under-rated classic that I always found a ton of fun, as well as visually stunning.

I love it! The colors, the characters, everything! Down to the way Warren Beatty walks around. It's just fun from beginning to end. Al Pacino is great! And I love the kid. What a find he is! I highly recommend it!

[10/8/20]: "I hate Warren Beatty films lol. Very colorful, i'm not sure how much creative direction as informing the colors but. The montage portions to backdrop of Madonna's voice is very good; Pacino was really popping off in over-the-top role. Production design is indeed very good. Big Batman vibes lol. Danny Elfman did score, go figure." [today]: I just remember Madonna being incredibly hot and the prosthetic makeup on some of these folks being u g l y.

I've always loved this picture. Pure fun and true gorgeousness, plus Madonna singing new songs by Stephen Sondheim. Seeing it again now offers the special treat of comparing the prodigious fury and lying of "Big Boy" Caprice to a certain shady ex-president. Real life wins, hands down.

An under-rated and under appreciated classic. That does the comic strip justice.

"7 colors." Wow! This is a movie with a true soul which captures completely the universe of comic, using a lot of incredible and creatives techniques, painting the entire movie with only seven colors and above all the magnificence offered by the image. There's all those great actors all covered by heavy make-up and costumes (and say it's the only movie starring both Hoffman and Pacino) there's the classy side of Madonna singing a tune you'll never forget! And of course a moving story depicted by mister Warren Beatty himself.

I truly do not understand the hate for this movie. It was exactly produced as it should have been. It mimicked the entire style of cheesy cliche 1930s detective comics. It was intentionally over the top and larger than life.

Brilliant comic come to life and Madonna gives one of her best most seductive performances

Not perfect by any means, but then again very few superhero / comic book adaptations rise to being cinematic masterpieces, it is nonetheless not as bad as its original critics made out. The only think holding this film back from greatness was the period it was released in; a period that was not yet ready for the comic book movie. Mad cap, camp and utterly fun - this cartoony gangster movie is perfect for all the family. I mean, hell, did anyone else expect Pacino, of all people, to have THIS much fun making this movie?

"Dick Tracy" is an absolutely gorgeous movie. You can tell that everyone involved cared so much about the quality of their work. The shot compositions, the prosthetics, and Pacino's performance are all so terrific, but for everything going for it, the movie lacks some quality that I can't quite put my finger on, and without it, "Dick Tracy" simply isn't that much fun to watch. I would certainly recommend sitting through it once just to marvel at what quality movie making can look like, but don't expect it to change your outlook on life the way a truly great film would. I give it a B - Next time you're in the mood for a movie, this one won't disappoint

Incredibly unique with an interesting film noir feel, dick Tracy achieves a lot of things for a 90's film but unfortunately was too early for its time. Feels over the top with the dated special effects but man it'd be fun to watch today.

Gorgeous and funny. Do the critiques about its emotional value hold water? Sure. But in sheer style and star power this movie is endlessly watchable and rewatchable. It's got limitless panache and it's visual style remains singular in a world that's become rife with poor screen treatments of comic book material.

Brought to life by a unique visual style and Al Pacino’s suitably over the top performance. Dick Tracy is a fun and stylish throwback to the 1920’s.
