Man on the Moon Reviews

Jim Carrey, who went method in his portrayal of Kaufman, delivers one of the best performances of his career in Man on the Moon.

| Original Score: 3.5/5 | Dec 23, 2024

Besides a clever script, deft direction, and Carrey literally carrying the film to incredible heights, Forman was able to assemble a host of actors playing themselves, including most of the original "Taxi" cast members...

| Original Score: B+ | Mar 2, 2022

A socko motion picture.

| Original Score: 3.5/4 | Feb 27, 2022

Entertaining biopic has strong language, brief nudity.

| Original Score: 4/5 | Dec 20, 2019

I really do feel Jim Carey deserved at least an Oscar nomination for his performance...Man on the Moon is fascinating, really well acted and really well directed.

The main problem with this film though is the running time -- it's too short.

| Jan 15, 2008

A teeming, fast-paced spin through a particularly strange show-biz life.

| Original Score: A+ | Sep 27, 2007

Ends up asking more questions than it answers.

| Original Score: 2.5/4 | Jul 14, 2007

We're constantly kept guessing as to what's real or false. Intriguing.

| Jun 24, 2006

Carrey gets inside Kaufman's skin.

| Original Score: 3/4 | May 26, 2006

Whether you like the film will probably depend on whether you thought Kaufman was funny the first time.

| Original Score: 4/5 | Dec 6, 2005

Forman makes this a thematic sequel to Amadeus, focusing on a misunderstood genius whose commitment to artistic vision came before acceptance, popularity, and his loved ones.

Not everyone knows Andy Kaufman, but the world knows Jim Carrey. Soon it will know more about Kaufman's unique style of humor.

| Original Score: 3/4 | Jun 25, 2004

More of an illustrated rsum than a character study, entertaining but seldom insightful.

Full Review | Original Score: 2.5/4 | Jul 15, 2003

postulates that Kaufman was the consummate actor, someone who stayed 'on' even in his offstage life, to the point of losing whatever personality he had. It's an intriguing theory, but it doesn't always make for a smooth viewing experience...

Will appeal to Kaufman fans and Carrey fans alike, and even if you're not a fan of either, you can't deny the intriguing quality of this strange story and the skill with which it's told.

| Original Score: 4.5/5 | Feb 8, 2003

[Jim Carrey] continues to prove that when he leaves his rubber-face, gross-out humor behind, he can be a terrific, accomplished actor.

| Original Score: 3.5/4 | Jan 29, 2003

The problem is that while Kaufman's life story has its required quota of bizarre-yet-true events, it's doomed to failure as mainstream entertainment because Kaufman wasn't terribly likeable as a person.

Full Review | Dec 2, 2002

Andy Kaufman biopic is hollow, even with Jim Carrey's chameleonlike performance.
