10 Things I Hate About You Reviews
For the most part, the cast sells it (Ledger is a clear highlight), while the conclusion is pleasant and the teen romance effectively cute.

10 Things I Hate About You has become a cult classic in the past 25 years because it nailed the universal truth about stereotypes: there’s always more to them than what’s seen on the surface.

10 Things I Hate About You — a modernized version of William Shakespeare’s The Taming of the Shrew — has everything you could want from a teen rom-com.

Marvelous set pieces contribute to this lively romantic comedy. You don't have to be a Shakespearean scholar to enjoy it. You don't have to be a teenager, either.

What 10 Things I Hate About You could have used, besides a less contrived teen title, is more teen laughs.

Gil Junger's clever direction, which uses peripheral action tellingly, keeps this loose revision of The Taming of the Shrew lively throughout. But though he has engaging counterparts for Katherina and Petruchio... Kiss Me Kate it ain't.

In terms of Shakespearean scholarship, "10 Things," directed with more energy than style by Gil Junger, may be but a footnote. But when they write the teen-flick book, this goes to the front of the class.

Who knew that Shakespeare dude could be so entertaining? References to him abound in this messy but enjoyable movie right down to the use of a remake of Nick Lowe's "Cruel to Be Kind." But you don't have to be a fan of the Bard to like this affable film.

"10 Things" has trouble being one thing. It's neither Shakespeare nor John Hughes, but falls into a fizzy middle ground.

Okay, I won't complain about the plot, but the dialogue is painfully witless, and there are more supposedly dramatic moments when a girl slams a door than should be legal in a 90-minute film.

Smartly written, lofted into orbit by a heads-up ensemble performance, it's bursting with new talent on both sides of the camera.
| Original Score: 3.5/4 | Jul 10, 2023
Balancing just the right amounts of irreverence, emotional truth and fidelity to its source material, 10 Things I Hate About You proves that Shakespeare can survive all manner of creative retellings and still resonate with joy and relevance.

This is the magic behind The 10 Things I Hate About You. It dives deep into the emotion that was lost in translation for many in Shakespeares’ writing and using every cinematic tool at its disposal to pull you deeper into that emotion.

This is the film that introduced Heath Ledger to the world. Every time he is on screen in the film he owns it.

The characters, their personalities, and their situations are convincing and interesting. And even though we get occasional breezes of routine storylines, the film manages to do things a bit different and it never feels conventional.

It was a fun movie...Gives a contemporary flair on a Shakespearian classic.

With an energy level that can only be described as infectious, it takes almost every dated teen-flick cliche (sensitive rebels, preening jocks, distracted adults, etc.) and makes them fresh and funny.

The script is funny and mostly charming. Really the whole thing is a fractal: I had every reason to hate this movie, and yet I found myself loving it against my will...

The humor doesn't always work for me but it is extremely well cast with a clever concept

10 Things I Hate About You is a sweet romantic comedy. But it is also a treatise about how young people navigate, negotiate, and balance all of the social, cultural, and personal expectations that swarm around them from all sides.
