The Count of Monte Cristo Reviews

Apr 26, 2025

A good portrayal of a great story. The actors stand up and the story unfolds naturally on screen. Worth the time

It doesn't get any better than this! Kevin Reynolds' "The Count of Monte Cristo" is a fun, historical drama, that conveys a good story, acting, cast, and pacing. Each act makes it all worth it. Reynolds allows the audience to become invested in all scenes/acts. I cheered every scene.

Not realy true to the book (but the core components are in it), but in my opinion it is one of the best versions. Pacing, acting and scenery are great. I enjoyed this one even more than the 2024-version.

Behold France's seminal adventure story and perhaps the greatest revenge tale ever written. The Count of Monte Cristo has all the makings of a good old-fashioned adventure: captivating characters, swordplay, a prison break, and more. My only criticism is that the final confrontation between the hero and villain ought to be longer to better savor the protagonist's years-long thirst for vengeance.

My favorite historical/adventure/revenge movie of all time. There's really nothing wrong here, aside from the fact it isn't a good ADAPTATION, but it's a great MOVIE by itself. Great action, acting, production value, script, really everything.

The Count of Monte Cristo brings the classic Alexandre Dumas tale to the 21st century, though some soap opera theatrics dampen the proceedings a bit.

An awesome film that is just so classic and so interesting. The cast does an excellent job with the film and the visuals are spectacular.

I was very disappointed with the movie starting from when Dantes escapes from Chateau d'If. In the book, 2/3 of the book is dedicated to the revenge. Here, it was considerably less and they changed the nature of the revenge. The Richard Chamberlain and the Tony Curtis versions were much closer to the book. I would skip this version.

There was a time when the events of the world made sense. I believe that's when this movie was made. It speaks to me in ways that I wouldn't admit to anyone.

I'm a big fan of the original Alexander Dumas book. This is a great adaptation of the book, but it does take its own creative liberties. Similar to the film version of "Frankenstein" a film does not have to be 100% faithful to the original to be a great version of the story. Film and literature are two different art styles and thus things need to be altered. There are certain aspects that the book can go into greater detail compared to a feature length film. The filmmakers here make all the correct decisions in regard to the pacing, acting and atmosphere of this film. Not all the changes are for the better, but both the book and the movie get a very easy recommendation from me.

Very unheard of movie but absolutely underrated THE BEST revenge movie you’ll see.

Very few movies are as enjoyable to watch and rewatch as this one. Accents aside, this is THE consummate movie. It encapsulates everything that the movies are all about. I wouldn't change a thing about it. Timeless and perfect.

Read the book as a teen and saw it as a story of revenge, watched the movie as a young adult and thought of it a story of retribution, but watching it again as a man that has endured and have made the choices that I’ve had to, and I understand it to be a story of redemption and I couldn’t have asked for a better cast to connect with my favorite book. Although I haven’t seen the 2024 film that just came out, and while it has better reviews I don’t think it can top this one. Jim Caviezel is The Count of Monte Cristo and Richard Harris is the Priest 100%.

I have seen 3 film versions, read the book and two audio (1 radio play and 1 audio book), of this classic story. The Jim Cavazie, Guy Pierce being my favourite so far, although it is only just ahead of the Richard Chamberlain, Louis Jourdin version. It's worth watching/listening to any version and reading the original book, is highly recommended. The films aren't strictly as the book tells the story. The ending in the book describes the moral consequences of the tale, whereas the other versions vary the endings somewhat. Nevertheless, it is a wonderful tale of romance, treachery, greed and revenge, that withstands the test of time.

A fantastic story and journey. I'm not much for 'era' movies from the past, but this one is superb. Great movie for the family as well.

Skip the movie and read the book. Guy Pierce does a fine job acting (as usual) but way too much is lost so it was very disappointing. Reading takes time and patience but seriously, the book is well worth the time. It’s a fantastic book. In my top 5 of my lifetime and I’m 60. My advice to movie makers- just don’t even mess with a masterpiece unless you can really bring book to life. Don’t take liberties to add parts that weren’t in the book or delete things. I think Dumas would have been disappointed.
