Critics Consensus

Alien: Covenant delivers another satisfying round of close-quarters deep-space terror, even if it doesn't take the saga in any new directions.

Karen Han Slashfilm Even if the twists and turns in the plot aren't too hard to see coming, there's a distinct joy that [Ridley] Scott takes in setting up and setting off each of those traps. Rated: 8/10 Dec 8, 2017 Full Review Kristen Lopez Culturess Covenant works best when it's honoring Alien and massively fails when it hearkens back to Prometheus. Nov 20, 2017 Full Review K. Austin Collins The Ringer There's an air of mystery to Alien: Covenant that the movie can't live up to, because for all its interest in what it all means, it has relatively little to show for all that idle questioning. Josh A I'm guessing this is how people who don't like Alien 3 see Alien 3. As someone who liked Prometheus, this was a bit of a disappointment. It's an alright movie, pretty average, it just frustrates me. Let's begin. So, this movie was meant to be a sequel to Prometheus, and that's what it is. But it doesn't really link. They killed off Elizabeth Shaw and the Engineers without a word and instead made a story about Xenomorphs. Just... why even make Prometheus 2 if this is what it's gonna be like? And David's here, but he's a villain? Why? But at the very least, the ending was cool. It was a bleak ending and quite dark, as the crew will forever be experimented on, and the Xenomorph has been officially created. The music fits it well, as it concludes David's arc in this film and brings it full circle. I still don't get why they made David a villain, but it worked, I guess. Overall, it's a disappointing sequel to Prometheus, but at least it's easy to ignore as Prometheus never needed a sequel. Rated 3 out of 5 stars 04/21/25 Full Review Paul S It was fun to watch, but overall it was uninteresting. It had great visuals, but it wasn't enough to make it a good story. Rated 3 out of 5 stars 03/27/25 Full Review Danielle C Best move ever how dare yall rate it at 65% that’s wild. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 03/27/25 Full Review Marc Z Ridley Scott's, Alien, was really the first Science Fiction Hour film ever made. It changed cinema and movie making forever. It has spawned numerous sequels and prequels and spin offs. Some of these are good and others not as much. This sequel to Prometheus, an excellent, but too cerebral for most, installment is very, very good. It has excellent action and adventure and horror. It is visually stunning and it is good storytelling in the Alien universe. The acting is good. The Direction and special effects are excellent, but Scott doesn't rely on the Special effects to make his story, and that is why it works so well. Love this cast. Michael Fassbender has added so much to the universe and he is great in dual roles in this one. Keep the franchise going so long as the commitment to never going back to when it lost its way (around Alien 3). Rated 3.5 out of 5 stars 03/23/25 Full Review Matthew H Another great entry into the Alien franchise these movies get better and better Rated 5 out of 5 stars 03/22/25 Full Review Adam M The cinematography was good, the story however, was predictable. In addition, it suffers from the main failing of Prometheus, characters making stupid decisions in order for the story to move along. Except this time, it happens way more often, to more characters. This was very frustrating to watch. Rated 1.5 out of 5 stars 03/08/25 Full Review Read all reviews
