Annette Reviews

Dec 2, 2024

I thought it was ridiculous

Relishes in style and undoubtedly talented enough to captivate with sensible heft, the elaborative musical product has an admirable tune seemingly inspired in Shakespearean, but the approach isn’t tolerably suited through general fondness unless you’re a knowledgeable fan of the directorial works. I dislike musicals, romances, and particularly romcom musicals -- but Annette immediately became one of my favorite movies of all time. In a league and genre all its own. There's quite simply nothing like it.

A truly weird viewing experience but also quite accessible (the plot is fairly simple and the style is mostly theatrical). If something hurts this it's only that the songs are unfortunately a bit of a mixed bag.

I wasn't sure at first, Adam Driver's singing voice is far from perfect, and the pop-rock genre is difficult to swallow at first too - in fact, I almost switched it off after the first few minutes... But OMG I was so glad I didn't. As always Adam Driver is sensational. He nails the comedian in turmoil and his performance is beyond mesmerizing. The puppet is perfect, full of expression and eerily capable of pulling at the heartstrings. The stand-up is so cleverly done and some scenes are "American Horror Story-esque" nightmare-worthy (clown baby). The whole thing is utterly captivating, albeit pleasantly anxiety-inducing. In fact I came back to edit this and upgrade the rating from 4.5 to 5 as I can't stop thinking about it. Oh, and a must see is Simon Helbergs performance...The Conductor Scene is outstanding in particular, probably the best musical performances in the film.

Weird, definitely. Original and different. A different approach to a musical

The soundtrack has some great moments

It took a while to warm up, but so worth the wait! The brilliance of the music and the rawness of the emotions blends with the unusual and compelling plot to create a one of a kind must-see movie! Loved it! Ps. Have a tissue handy!

It's a campy movie about an immature man who kills his wife and then kills his best friend while his daughter watches. He tries to convince his incredibly gifted daughter that he's not that bad. But in the end she points out that the abyss of self loathing is the legacy he leaves her with. So the world will not benefit from her gift. Neither of the male leads can sing yet this is a rock opera and the daughter is a wood puppet. There are gratuitous sex scenes with a naked Adam Driver. If you still watch it after my review then you will love it.

Annette is an absolutely facinating movie. Ingeniously well made. Mindblowing. And i'm not a musical fan but something about it, its rawness, its darkness made me fall in love with it. The music and the singing in this movie was epic.

How has this film received so many high scores? The only reason I didn't walk out was because I thought "it's had good reviews it must get better than this". It didn't. Two hours of my life I'll never get back...

Silly and goofy and weirdly moving at times. Adam Driver can sing!

Very jarring at first but then you fall in love with it

Just because your movie is deeply weird doesn't mean it is any good.

I watched this for Adam Driver, but this movie is a treat for anyone who's a fan of musicals.

The surrealism that piques your interest at the beginning of the film fades into a hassle by the ending credits. I'll watch anything with Adam Driver and know that his final scene in A Marriage Story was popular, but he's not a lead for a musical. The plot — an unconventional comedian (Driver) falls in love with an opera singer (Marion Cotillard), they have a child (puppet/Devyn McDowell) who the former must take care of while the latter rises to stardom — deserves a dramatic, instead of musical, retelling. Also, their child, Annette, is portrayed as a marionette puppet until the very end of the film; I don't understand this decision and didn't like it. The best moments were Henry (Driver) pretending to be shot by machinegun fire on stage and the Accompanist (Simon Helberg) providing his corner of the love-triangle's monologue while composing — the revolving camera and immensity of this scene are worth their own watch. It's dark and feels original, but don't throw it on if you're looking for a traditional musical.

The proposal is quite original. Maybe as a teenager claiming for attention. Some songs are not bad, and some shots are beautiful. Makes it interesting enough to watch until the end? Not for me.

I wanted to see the film because I am a fan of both Adam & Simon. Well, I'm still trying to figure this film out I do NOT like nude scenes so there is a minus to the film No spoilers here did not like the spoiler end of it & what happened to characters Just disappointed in this film

Annette is a mess of a film, a strangely unemotional film that by the end felt like a chore to watch. Leos Carax is undoubtedly a unique film maker and his first English language film is certainly daring but it falls rather flat for me. Which is a pity because its two stars, Adam Driver and Marion Cotillard, are two of the best in the business. They play Henry, an abrasive comedian, and Ann, an acclaimed opera singer. They meet and soon fall in love before Ann falls pregnant. But their child is an actual puppet named Annette. Strange I know, but the film gets stranger. By the end I had frankly lost interest in the convoluted plot. Added to this, the film is a rock opera, not my favourite sort of film experience. I was never ever engaed in this film at all, a very strange experience.

Let me just say, we couldn't even finish it. By the time Adam Driver (whom we LIKE) gets to his second "comedy" act (which is really just incredibly bad performance art), we noped out. We only watched this for him, and even he couldn't make us stay. Cotillard's voice was better than I thought, but that's the best I can say about this movie. The music is pathetic. It's painfully pretentious. If we had finished this movie, I'm quite certain it would have killed us.
