Annette Reviews
weird movie, GREAT SOUNDTRACK, GREAT CINEMATOGRAPHY!
Weird. Amazing storytelling. Great acting.. PHENOMENAL.
What I liked? The music was phenomenal !.... Amazing sets and costumes. It is an American Art Film. Not sure I understood the metaphor. It starts out very fun but, gets complicated.
Imagine a musical movie written by one of your favorite bands since the late 70s with a great French Director amazing actors .. unbelievable cinematography.. and a robot baby! you are sitting in a beautiful theater in a recliner chair and the sound is amazing. I would have thought I was in a Fredrick Fellini film except the writers Ron and Russell Mael kept showing up in the movie!! I’m so lucky to be a Sparks fan so I found this Gem.. if you are a film student or love foreign films without sub titles this is a must see.. if you love a good movie that the masses won’t see .. this is a must see. If you have ever been to Niagara Falls at 3 am in January you know what I mean!
It was extraordinarily weird.
While I love the actors (and often their specific scenes)....however, the overall movie is one of the very worst movies I have ever watched. I left about 4/5 into the film (as the ship scene began). It is like a cross between "La La Land" and "Lenny" (Bruce)....The film takes pride in its darkness and its moments of profane plot.
Wtf. It had some artistic elements though.
If I was prepared for a musical I would give it a three star. I tried very hard to like it but I couldnt get there. I enjoyed the storyline but I didnt enjoy how it was approached.
When I was in elementary school, my teachers taught me about the important concept of "Show, don't tell." That said, I walked out of this movie after a 5 minute duet of Adam Driver and Marion Cotillard singing "We love each other so much." Did they explain WHY they loved each other? No. Did they explain how they met or became a couple? Also no. Instead, Adam and Marion took a ride on his motorcycle, a walk through a forest and then had rather passionless sex while singing "We love each other so much." Then I walked out and saw "Aretha" instead. WTF is this movie?
I was mistakenly expecting a weird unpredictable movie like Mulholland Drive that comes together in the end.
This film seemed like it was going to be terrible at first. As it went on I started to notice the layers of symbolism and things going on in the background of some of the scenes that were absolutely fascinating. Now I cant stop thinking about this film. I really want to see it again because I know there are things I missed the first time that are important to catch in order to fully understand what this film is meant to say. I was surprised at how dark the story turned out to be. It left me feeling something that I dont normally experience with films. When it was over I wanted more. I cant stop thinking about this film and I honestly hope they make a sequel.
Many, Many, Reasons, I was the last and only one not to leave the theater. I only stayed to get my monies worth. Oh, and I did not!!!
Horrible, horrible movie. Its failed attempt to be operatic was only made worse by the hideous portrayal of the child. This was a terrible story told terribly. And way too long.
beautifully directed and great cast, the movie was a lot more emotional and heavier than expected. definitely would recommend!
So good!!! Adam Driver is the best!!
The opening musical number set a high bar for the movie and in my opinion, was the best thing about the film. The rest of the movie reminded me of plays we did in college when we thought we are being so provocative and avant garde and when people didn't get it, we thought the problem was with the audience. I love seeing Adam Driver in anything but even his presence couldn't save this silly over-the-top film.
I am a Sparks fan, so that biases mebut I was really impressed. I am also a Who fan, and in a weird way find it kind Tommy-likein that its a Mael rock opera. And a morality play, which is refreshing, the protagonist gets told off rather than redeemed. Plus just the dark absurdity is very funny yet its dealing with important stuff, jealousy and narcissistic competition overwhelming a relationship with gratuitous smoking and drinking. Yes, Ill tell lots of strangers I liked it.
Not your average musical. The acting, music, and story line is awesome in this pop rock musical.
Adam Drivers acting range is out of this world
Annette is magnificent. A true work of art and artistic integrity. You just cant look away. It takes your breath away and makes you feel everything. A must see if you love movies
