Assassination Nation Reviews

Every point the film wants to make has to be roared via lengthy speeches and declarations made straight down the lens. Any deeper meaning becomes lost. When the fires finally subside, there's not that much to be found in the ashes.

| Original Score: 3/5 | Dec 3, 2018

Gleeful... I turned to myself and went, "wow."

Here it is, the definitive movie for the Donald Trump era. Like Trump, it's crass, disturbing and devoid of subtext. Unlike him, it has style, self-awareness and a sense of humour.

| Original Score: 4/5 | Nov 27, 2018

Takes well-aimed potshots at the patriarchy and the expectations placed upon young women by a jaded, content-hungry culture raised on insta-porn imagery.

| Original Score: 4/5 | Nov 25, 2018

The messages are conveyed by a dizzying mass of violent, sexual images ... that throb to an excellent score by Ian Hultquist. Bravura shots abound.

| Original Score: 4/5 | Nov 23, 2018

Enough with the feminism-as-male-titillation, please.

| Original Score: 1/5 | Nov 21, 2018

Like a real-life stroppy teen, Assassination Nation is pissed off with something new every five minutes - but there's style and sophistication here. The Trump era has its first dorm-room classic.

| Original Score: 4/5 | Nov 19, 2018

Assassination Nation has got a little of the teen satire of Heathers, and there's a sense memory of 90s-00s suburban pictures such as Election, American Beauty and Ghost World.

| Original Score: 3/5 | Oct 19, 2018

It is a vibrant - and increasingly violent - coming-of-age story unfolding along the perilous fault lines of America's culture wars, where, with borders closing, new lines must be drawn.

| Oct 15, 2018

Assassination Nation is a lesson in taking back agency in a world that constantly tries to strip young women of it. But it also forces the audience to wake up and hold up a mirror to the hypocrisy in our own values.

| Oct 4, 2018

Watching Assassination Nation's arch portrait of today's currents and countercurrents, one senses just how utterly irreconcilable our many differences are.

| Sep 27, 2018

This attack on misogyny, mob rule, hypocrisy, and transphobia is a film that effectively taps the nerve of an angry, yet evolving country.

| Original Score: 3.5/4 | Sep 26, 2018

It should be noted that none of the points being made here are in anyway subtle. They're also blatantly obvious. But that doesn't make what Levinson is saying any less vital or important.

| Original Score: 3/4 | Sep 24, 2018

It's an angry movie for angry times, which doesn't necessarily make it a clever or coherent commentary on how American hypocrisy leads to American carnage.

| Original Score: 2.5/5 | Sep 22, 2018

From privacy and fame to sex, hacking scandals and Instagram, "Assassination Nation" takes on a laundry list of hot topics and rolls its eyes at all of them.

| Original Score: C- | Sep 21, 2018

Assassination Nation is a blistering yet effective exaggeration of our real-life dystopia.

| Sep 21, 2018

Audiences may nonetheless forgive the film's shortcomings because of its sheer verve and chutzpah.

| Sep 21, 2018

Levinson's film vaguely shelters a compelling story about today's unforgiving online mob mentality beneath its convoluted layers.

| Original Score: 1.5/4 | Sep 21, 2018

Dude really tried to mansplain the virgin/whore paradigm in the midst of this exploitative claptrap.

| Sep 20, 2018

An ambitious but somewhat chaotic film, Levinson invites his audience into Salem-an American suburb where real horrors lie in everyone's cell phone histories, downloads, and clouds.
