Audrey Reviews

Aug 29, 2023

An unremarkable documentary that doesn't live up to the grandeur of its subject, Audrey fails to highlight Audrey Hepburn's personal life and career in a captivating way.

I enjoyed this documentary and found it very interesting in revealing the life of the legendary actress Audrey Hepburn and the kind of simple down to earth women she was. It also showed us the tragedies in her life from an early age and how she overcame them with family & friends, plus I particularly enjoyed the humanitarian side of her that we didn't get to see in the media and how she helped millions of children throughout the world through UNICEF. She was such a beautiful women both inside & out as I gained a lot of respect for her after this movie.

Expertly done. It leaves an indelible mark on one's heart.

I should tell you that my review will be completely biased because I truly admire Audrey Hepburn even though I was born after her death and I became acquainted with her movies in high school. After this documentary, I believe that it is impossible to not fall in love with Audrey, because she is portrayed with all her vulnerabilities and brilliance. It is strongly suggested for a Hepburn admirer.

Reviewed 4.15.21 This Netflix doc is well produced and provides an interesting, but cursory look at the influential and inspiring life of Audrey Hepburn. It will go down sweet for fans of the cultural icon, as it sticks closely to her side of the story, represented most intimately by her close friends and family. Unfortunately, the opinions of her ex-husbands are not included. Perhaps the Hepburn family deemed them unworthy of inclusion, or perhaps they simply never went on record. For such a public figure, she kept her personal life as private as possible. This is to be admired, but makes her a challenging subject for a truly in-depth documentary. That said, she lived such a dynamic life that even a surface telling offers much to behold. She may just be the most influential celebrity of the second half of the 20th century (perhaps the peak of Hollywood celebrity culture). Her Dickensian tale, and larger than life impact, make for must watch biographical history.

This documentary really surprised me. I thought I knew a fair amount about Audrey Hepburn but this brought her to life in a totally new way. I loved the use of dance and the archive footage was simply stunning. It was inspirational and really moving - I would highly recommend.

Really well produced

I can't imagine why the film makers would want to bog down the mesmerizing images and clips of one of the most beautiful and photogenic women in the world with the ridiculous added clunky ballet sequences. Get the fast forward ready. Other than that, a real treat for Audrey fans to learn more about her personal life. She was truly magical.

The interviews, the film clips, and the news footage are great. But that dancer on the stage who isn't Audrey and those tacky re-enactments of her father leaving and little Audrey clinging to him: WHY?! These scenes were unnecessary and dragged the movie down. Be sure to keep your remote nearby to fast forward through that nonsense and get to the real Audrey, who was amazing in so many ways.

Emma Thompson once said: "I find Audrey Hepburn fantastically twee. Twee is whimsy without wit. It's mimsy-mumsy sweetness without any kind of bite. And that's not for me. She can't sing and she can't really act, I'm afraid. I'm sure she was a delightful woman – and perhaps if I had known her I would have enjoyed her acting more, but I don't and I didn't, so that's all there is to it, really." I tend to agree. This documentary did nothing to change my mind, but gives [superficial] insight into her early life, and [again, largely superficial, almost voyeuristic] a view into her years after acting, relationships, children, tireless volunteer work with UNICEF, and early stoic death. It's both a stiff documentary--AND somewhat twee itself--e.g., throughout the film, 3 actresses play Audrey, personifying 3 phases of her life by ballet dancing in empty rooms (the casting of the 1960s Audrey, a ballerina named Francesca Hayward, is a puzzler because she is sort of chunky with a short thick neck, tree trunk legs, bubble butt, and muscular back--almost the polar opposite of Audrey Hepburn's ultra feminine physique).

Always been a fan of Audrey Hepburn and admired her work outside of Hollywood. I do wonder what the point of having the ballet scenes interspersed in a documentary when it wasn't her dancing. Seemed pointless. She was much adored but often sad and betrayed by trusted loved ones from her father to her husbands. Amazing resilience.

I didn't expect to be as surprised by this movie as I was. The unseen and unheard archive footage was fascinating. A few moments in and I was hooked, it's impossible not to be touched by this portrait of Audrey

Quite disappointing. I'm a huge fan of Audrey but this treatment kinda sucked. The droning background music more suited to a low budget 80's sci fi movie. Almost zero footage of Audrey speaking in interviews, just voice over other random clips. Too much other people doing random stuff too like the dancing at the end. Sorry?

For a film about such a private person, this is amazing stuff.

A brilliant, moving portrait of such an amazing woman. The dance sequences were wonderful and there's so much archive footage and audio of Audrey that I've never seen before!
