Babylon Reviews

The movie itself is kind of entertaining and colourful but way too long for exactly what message? These auto-celebrating or criticizing movies about Hollywood are not bad per se, but they should be done much much better and they are not. The acting of Robbie is ok not exceptional

Я думаю это один из самых гениальных фильмов за всю историю кинематографа! Обожаю его, каждая сцена великолепна! Актеры великолепны! Костюмы, сценарий, шутки великолепны!

Over the top debauchery in this fantastically portrayed Hollywood film. It was pretty good just kinda farfetched.

Damien Chazelle made a film in "Babylon" that at the moment of its release was a critical and financial flop, but within the decade will be considered a misunderstood masterpiece by many with myself included. I totally can see why this film threw a lot of people off at the time: a 3-hour film that's heavy in excess, contains a story with various storylines and characters that's executed in a chaotic manner, and a film about an era of film history that probably isn't the most appealing to a mass audience. That being said, this film is truly incredible and might even be my favorite film from Chazelle not named "Whiplash" and it's definitely his most important film because of how much it focuses on showing why filmmaking history and cinema of the past is essential to the period we're in today.

Filme fraco, o roteiro é fraco, as cenas são mais ou menos, o elenco é muito bom, mas ninguém ajudou a melhorar o filme, a história é fraca, e o filme deveria ter cenas boas e relevantes para fazer o filme ser bom.

Babylon (2022) – A Fever Dream of Cinema Wow. Just… wow. Babylon isn’t just a film—it’s a grand, electrifying tribute to the sheer madness and magic of cinema itself. Damien Chazelle, a true visionary, crafts a breathtaking, unapologetically chaotic spectacle that immerses you in the reckless excess of Hollywood’s golden age. His direction is fearless, pushing the boundaries of storytelling with a kinetic, almost anarchic energy that feels both exhilarating and deeply reverential. From the staggering performances to the meticulously designed set pieces, everything feels precisely orchestrated yet wildly alive. But the true heartbeat of this film? The music. Justin Hurwitz’s score doesn’t just complement the film—it elevates it. The pulsating jazz-infused soundtrack injects an infectious energy into every frame, making the entire experience feel like a hypnotic fever dream of sound and motion. Chazelle has once again proven himself to be one of the most ambitious filmmakers of his generation, delivering a film that is as intoxicating as it is relentless. This is pure, unfiltered cinema—bold, unhinged, and exhilarating. If you crave a film that overwhelms your senses and revels in the chaotic beauty of storytelling, Babylon is a must-watch. 10/10.

A love letter to Hollywood cinema of ambitious proportions, this film boasts grand production value. The production design is lavish, immersing us in the era with meticulous attention to detail. The cinematography is excellent, featuring ambitious long takes and dynamic camera movements that are characteristic of Chazelle’s work. The rhythmic editing effectively engages us in the action, keeping the energy high. However, at times, the film feels like it’s trying too hard without truly saying anything of substance. It struggles to make the world it portrays feel desirable or to highlight enough redeeming qualities about it. The music deserves recognition, working in tandem with the editing and sound to maintain the film’s rhythm, pacing, and dramatic tension. Yet, it occasionally becomes repetitive and overwhelming. Some of its musical choices feel reminiscent of Chazelle’s previous works (especially La La Land) borrowing instrumentation, harmonic progressions, and even thematic elements in a way that can come across as lazy or derivative. Certain scenes, performances, and dramatic beats are taken to extremes, embracing excess and melodrama. While this aligns with the film’s tone and themes, there are moments where it becomes overwhelming. Structurally, the story follows the rise and fall of three characters navigating Hollywood’s golden age, but I found it difficult to connect with them emotionally. However, despite the long runtime (arguably excessive) the film’s fast pacing and spectacle kept me engaged. One could argue that this story has been told before, a point the film itself acknowledges, particularly in its closing moments. The ending may be divisive, as it shifts tone and narrative style, incorporating experimental visuals, sound, and music alongside footage from other films to illustrate cinema’s evolution. While I found this bold and emotionally resonant, it won’t be for everyone. In short, it’s a grandiose epic with some notable shortcomings. It may be longer than necessary, and its stylistic choices won’t appeal to all, but it’s worth experiencing for its ambition and craftsmanship.

Somebody owes me 3 hours of my life back. Garish, pseudo-Baz-Lurhmann-esque, soft porny, disjointed, bad accents, and ultimately very boring show. The only interesting part of the movie was the set design. Wonderful furniture and some amazing vehicles. After the first hour I didn't care about any of the characters and when the show mercifully was finally over, the only good thing about it was that it was finally over.

Loved it. Babylon is as close to a confession as Hollywood gets. A great colorful and soulful self examination of the movie scene as it switched from the silent film to the introduction of sound. A rollercoaster ride through the high octane parties of the golden age through the dark underbelly of tinsel town. From the eminence front of the pretentious rich funders to the blood sweat and tears of the people who made the movies. Mostly it's a good close look at the studios and what happens on and off the set. There's also a lot less sex and nudity than some reviews claim. It's actually disappointing. If you add up all the nude cuts it won't be more than a single minute of this three hour long epic movie. So chill. This is Hollywood. If you need purity and abstinence there's always Utah. Grab some popcorn, lay back and appreciate watching how the golden oldies were made.

It is a must watch that might upset you. Production values are simply great. Subject matter can be tiring, and a few gratuitous scenes that offset the story and upset the flow will leave you puzzled. Needs multiple viewing to get the nuances, and might be rediscovered. Acting is right on point, mixing caricatures and felt human emotions. Directorially, the movie "goes back to the well'" once too many time, but it's definitely a rollercoaster that will get you excited & nauseous. Chazelle might get some Fellini's inspiration (probably), while staying true to himself. Years from now, his filmography will show an indistinguishable thread. Would have been a smash if reined-in a little. Watch it.

A bit too chaotic. A lot of nudity and R rated scenes

It's abt the evolution of film making and the beauty & horrors behind of art of films.

Una historia que da vueltas como un perro tras su cola y no llega a nada, pero es entretenido ver. Lo único que me dejo esta película después de verla es que, antes si merecían esos sueldos los de Hollywood

This movie is too disjointed. There are multiple absolutely fantastic jobs of acting. The filming style is engaging and intriguing. This should of been an absolute knock it out of the park fantastic movie. But it becomes difficult to stay engaged even with the wonderful portrayals. Just a little too much. Also much of the decadence went too far, perhaps accurately.

I really don't understand why the movie was so poorly rated, I honestly thought it was a great movie, the way they portrayed Hollywood and the underground culture of LA around that time.
