Back to Black Reviews
The whole thing feels lightweight.
| Original Score: 2/5 | Dec 10, 2024
Back to Black spends almost all its runtime focused on Winehouse and Fielder-Civil’s destructive romance, as if it were the only thing to have existed in the late singer’s life.
| Original Score: 2.5/5 | Aug 15, 2024
Back to Black tells a familiar story. ... But it still works, thanks ... to the dynamic central character, her knockout music, and the passionate performance of Marisa Abella, who plays – and sings as – Winehouse.
| Original Score: 3.5/4 | Aug 10, 2024
Their film is, like the media’s perception of Amy herself, often messy and even incoherent, but it does make the bare minimum in humanising this member of the 27 Club more than it easily could have.
| Original Score: 3/5 | Aug 5, 2024
If Winehouse was guilty of anything, it was terrible taste in men. Her meet cute with Blake Fielder ignores that Fielder is a sofa surfing, popped collar d-bag who doesn't know what the word "anachronistic" means. And he already has a girlfriend!
| Original Score: 2.5/5 | Jul 27, 2024
It’s not just a disservice to Winehouse and her legacy - it’s a disservice to compelling storytelling.

It's better than you've heard.
| Original Score: B | Jul 12, 2024
There is not much to dislike about this film but the fact that the people around Winehouse seemed unable or unwilling to stop her from self-destructing. It breaks one’s heart to think someone in her circle could have helped her in the end.
| Original Score: 3/4 | Jul 6, 2024
Abela’s poignant and passionate performance as the singer offers audiences a moving portrait of an artist who could have offered so much more, but whose light was cut short in the prime of her life.
| Jul 2, 2024
Marisa Abela does a fine job duplicating Winehouse – particularly her voice – but she’s not given the scenes that could land her the kind of attention these films bring.
| Original Score: 2/4 | Jun 27, 2024
Make[s] the central emotional drama of [Amy Winehouse's] final years clearer to the audiences by elevating her relationship with Blake Fielder-Civil to the position it actually had in her life.
| Original Score: 3/5 | Jun 16, 2024
Feels more like a melodramatic depiction of Amy’s complicated and toxic relationship with Blake Fielder-Civil than an insightful exploration of her life and career. It teeters on the edge of tabloid-esque, which really is a shame.
| Jun 10, 2024
The movie is well-paced and sufficiently engaging despite a lack of focus beyond Winehouse’s romantic dalliances.
| Original Score: 3/5 | Jun 10, 2024
It never figures out what it wants to say about Amy Winehouse.

...compelling subject matter that’s employed to sometimes watchable yet predominantly underwhelming effect...
| Original Score: 2/4 | Jun 7, 2024
[Marisa Abela's] resemblance to Winehouse is striking... But it’s not a transcendent performance, the sort that awes and thrills you with an actress’s bravura and muscle -- and it needs to be.

If 'Back to Black' is not disposable, it is because of punctual outbreaks of sensitivity and, above all, because of the honorable effort of Marisa Abela. [Full review in Spanish]
| Original Score: 3/5 | Jun 5, 2024
Abela's noble work in portraying Amy Winehouse goes to waste in the weirdly messy, tacky Back to Black.

The mission indeed was difficult. On the one hand, it faced the thorny problem of doing justice to the myth, and, on the other, it had already been done once. [Full review in Spanish]

A more than fine 'biopic' that will delight the singer's fans... [Full review in Spanish]
