Baise-moi Reviews
A film that's just begging to be banned and/or censored, Baise-moi, isn't exactly high art, but I found myself surprisingly compelled by it, mostly due to its characters and the bizarre and bloody odyssey they go on. The violence and sexual content is as graphic as you'd expect from a film with this kind of reputation, but I think what likely bothered people so much about it is the flippancy with which its treated. The leads kill at will while expressing no remorse, even acting gleefully in some instances, and the implication that a rape victim could be so nonplussed by the experience is bound to ruffle some feathers. The poor visual quality gives it a very stripped down, home movie feel, like its being made by a crazed film student using the cheapest camcorder they could get their hands on. If you've seen Natural Born Killers, the vibe and general storyline will feel very familiar to you, right down to the attention our leads receive from the media. Watching it is far from a pleasant experience, but it's interesting characters and escalating storyline were enough to keep me invested until the very end.
Most critic's hated it but for me it will always be a great movie. Often described as Thelma & Louise on crack, which is strangely a pretty fair description, this is the road movie from hell. Basically 77 minutes of violence, sex & nudity this is certainly not a film for minors. It's just a shame it appears to have been filmed in SD as the quality isn't up to the standards of Blu-ray. Review based on the US import & not the edited UK version.
Street-art on celluloid: technically crude, but that perfectly fits the primal cry that the movie is. Don't expect a "balanced view" of grunge life in France— written by an ex-prostitute, co-directed by a porn star, the question the movie throws at you is "What kind of life experience do these violent fantasies spring from?" The film's honesty is stunning.
Shit, shocking, but unsatisfying like smoking bad hash as they do in the movie. The nudity does not add anything productive.
At the same time as I don't recommend this film to anyone as a 'must watch' , I found this film incredibly cathartic, and almost recognized something in the anger of the main characters. It is a vengeance film of two women, two sex workers, who have had enough and find solidarity and love in each other.I think their relationship is awesome. I also do ship them to be fair...I love the sound track some good french rock bands. I think it's quite heartfelt story, explores many taboos around sex with stangers, promiscuity, and women's societal image. Written and acted by sex workers, it is not exactly a porn film and none of the sex scene are made for the eye of a man audience; but they are not excatly sexy either - quite visceral and disturbing to watch, they do not focus on emotion, feelings, or cock: the sex is orchestrated by the girls and doesnt lose time in chitchats: they know what theyre after because they know they re gonna die., and also, they dont give a single shit about this world who'se fucked them over in many ways: finding each other was a blessing at a time when they need it most. I love the dialogue and their characters. " isnt it strange that we meet at this time?" "no, it was now or it would have been never". ill end with a quote "the more you fuck, the less you think. the less you think, the better your sleep" like, yes girl. Anyway, I would actually pay to see them fuck. Also, the tall one is clearly in love with her friend, which I fucking adore. Anyway, wouldnt recommend to many people, but fuck I love it.
I watched this with an open mind - I had read King Kong Theory by Virginie Despentes with much interest - but this film was entirely unenjoyable. All the humanity that Despentes has claimed for downtrodden women and for men trapped in their conventional male roles, and all her claims about the liberating effects of her experience of prostitution and coming to terms with rape, are absent from this grim tale of random violence and random sex. Some scenes are yes interesting and provocative, but the complete lack of human sympathy or sense of justice undermines any claims this may wish to make for abused women. In the end all the hard core does not help, it lacks credibility.
The box said it was “Thelma and Louise with penetration!” I thought that was metaphor, but it has real hardcore sex scenes and that fake looking violence. It’s a low-budget sexploitation film about two birds who are feed up with the world and makes the world feel their pain by going on a killing spree. VERDICT: this movie is garbage.
This was an early rental for me from Netfux way back in the day, and something I was pleased to final revisit via an Arrow DVD from the UK. The story of two horribly abused women who finally strike back at society in general and men in particular, we follow these ladies in a killing spree that includes a lot of non-simulated sex (which brought this film a bit of notoriety) and tons of casual violence. Worth a look if you have the chance, but likely not for the faint of heart.
This is a low budget, low quality, bad acted, foolishly directed porn film. Who put it in the "new French extremity" genre?
Thelma & Louise meets Natural Born Killers in Virginie Despentes and Coralie Trinh Thi's controversial crime drama. The depraved duo stretch their budget wisely to bring us a sort of sadomasochistic female empowerment fantasy, which follows a pair of depraved female predators wreaking havoc in a world of leering men. The film features a lot of shooting, a lot of shrieking punk songs and more amateur porn than your Dad's DVD collection. But it never, ever loses focus, and its violent veneer veils a genuine dialogue on the allure of criminal addiction and crazed companionship. A visceral rampage with real weight.
This is the punk hard-core version of Thelma & Louise. It's shot digitally and has a grittiness to it. At times it comes across a little amateurish and it certainly looks cheap. Surprisingly, the sex is explicit and hardcore. The rape scene is realistically disturbing and the girl's retribution has a real "I don't give a fuck" attitude - very punk. The BBFC banned it for numerous reasons, not least of all because one of the girls fires a gun up some poor guy's asshole. Yikes! I admire the feminist angle but the film is unapologetically exploitative.
Ultimately unsuccessful take on the two guys who go on a rampage story flipped so that two women take off stealing cars, shooting and murdering their way across France and having sex in a variety of combinations. Apparently the sex is all real and the actors mainly from the porn industry. It is curiously ugly, but does present the thought for consideration of do we see men and women differently. This film is almost terminally unglamorous and grubby and is probably far closer to "reality" than 99% of household sex and violence epics. Doesn't make it good though.
quite a raw film that plays on the fairly brutal sexual violence for more than just effect. i found it difficult to get drawn into the characters though and as such the film just left me feeling a bit sordid and voyeuristic.
AL's patented movie disclaimer: DO NOT WATCH Baise-Moi unless you truly enjoy twisted and transgressive cinema. Baise-Moi (literally "Fuck Me") is a difficult film to rate. Essentially a rape-revenge version of Thelma and Louise with unsimulated sex, it remains one of the films that signals the turning point in new extreme French cinema. I give the film 3 1/2 stars for its profoundly independent and transgressive spirit, but it is no necessarily as intelligent as it wants to be. Its seemingly feminist message is somewhat undercut by the graphic sex scenes which are disturbing at times but just seem to be including as titillation at other points. Baise-Moi strives to be a film about female empowerment in both a sexual and ideological sense, but its message gets somewhat muddied along the way as it seems to participate in the objectification of female bodies.
Lots of strong sex and violence, you can see why they wanted this banned, sort of Thelma & Louise for adults.Worth a watch, just don't think its a movie to watch with the in laws
This film is quite hard to watch in some places, particularly the rape scene at the beginning...Iam just not sure it needed to be so shockingly graphic...Sometimes its what you dont see, whats suggested instead, that is more effective...
Shot like an episode of Brookside and with all the maturity of a particularly juvenile teenager, this film is like being served a shit sandwich, while the waiter tells you it's brie. Fuck me indeed .
