Becoming Led Zeppelin Reviews
...at times it feels too close to an infomercial, a mere exercise in brand management. [Full review in Spanish]

I’ll admit they were never a personal favorite, but Bernard MacMahon’s film makes a pretty great case for them, drawing on a wealth of archival performance footage. Even among numerous fine rock docs in recent years, this ranks near the top.

Too polished and surface-level for its own good, Becoming Led Zeppelin’s inevitably drags mightily.

The next great Rock n Roll documentary has arrived. Fantastic.
| Original Score: 3.5/4 | Feb 22, 2025
It’s a wonderful, fascinating journey that should be seen in the loudest theater available to you.

Rather superficial rock music doc.

If you’re looking for dirt, it ain’t here. But if you’re looking for thunderous riffs delivered on a giant Dolby sound system, Becoming Led Zeppelin’s got ’em.

Why are these guys so boring? It’s a mystery that won’t be probed by director Bernard MacMahon and co-writer Allison McGourty, who tick off the usual gigs and recording anecdotes on the rise to fame with a then-this-happened dutifulness.

Hinges so remarkably on the impossible alchemy of each essential piece of a band that carves the groove, chugs through it, floors it off the tracks, and leaves smoke and rainbows in the dust.
| Original Score: B | Feb 18, 2025
The manner in which the band’s story is visualized via editing, superimposed images, and graphics creates a sense of excitement.
| Original Score: 4/4 | Feb 18, 2025
The master-musicianship that the press initially overlooked, and which the tales of bad behaviour obscure, is front and centre here.
| Original Score: 4/5 | Feb 14, 2025
Entertaining, but if you know practically anything about Led Zeppelin’s history, well, let’s just say it paints a bit of a sanitized portrait of what this band was and for what it was known.

For the duration of this film I was in a forgiving mood, won over by the visceral thrill of the band’s sound.
| Feb 13, 2025
A hagiographic look at the group’s beginnings, the movie is as straightforward as it is headbangingly diverting.
| Feb 13, 2025
Wisely, [director Bernard] MacMahon revolves the entire film around these interviews...
| Original Score: 3/4 | Feb 13, 2025
There are worse ways to spend two hours than listening to Led Zeppelin songs being blasted through an IMAX sound system.
| Feb 13, 2025
Captivating, exhilarating and slickly edited, but somewhat shallow.

The production here is top tier, well edited, and it's such a treat to have the three remaining members interviewed in wide-eyed splendor. Despite some pacing issues, a must watch for any Zeppelin fan.
| Original Score: 7/10 | Feb 12, 2025
Thankfully, MacMahon’s profile of the band is so seamlessly crafted and engaging that you might not miss the dirty details of the band’s personal lives, instead surrendering to the film’s primary subject: the music.

Each band member seems to be given equal time to tell their story, bringing a welcome balance to the narrative. It’s the same balance that Page says he wanted to bring to the music, with every element of the quartet as important as another.
